Press release In Denmark, 44 year old Viggo Mortensen is most widely associated with Aragorn in The Lords of the Rings movies, while he is relatively unknown as a visual artist and poet. Yet, long before his acting career, from his early childhood, he has continually worked with pictures and words. Museet for Fotokunst now presents Viggo Mortensen the photographic artist, and throughout the summer will exhibit his works that span 26 years, taken in USA, New Zealand and Africa. Even though some of his photos may have been taken in places where Mortensen's movies were shot, they are in no way film stills. Rather, they may be characterized as poetic, meditative studies of people, places and landscapes, often with great sensitivity of expression and a surreal vision. The exhibition comprises about 100 photos (colour and b/w work); and it is the first major retrospective in Europe, showing Mortensen's photographs. It is arranged in direct collaboration with Viggo Mortensen. KATALOG, the museum's photographic journal, will be published medio June, containing a 14 page presentation of the exhibition. It will feature a comprehensive essay by Lonnie Hansen, MA., about Viggo Mortensen.

RECENT FORGERIES Paintings, Photographs, Words and Objects by VIGGO MORTENSEN November 21st through January 23rd. A simple gesture, a seeming coincidence, accidental encounters, changes of light-Mortensen uses his art to capture (and recapture) the moments of his life, to give it meaning, to understand, to satisfy his curiosity and to express his wonder at the "suchness" of things and people in the passing world. Included in the exhibition are his writing, paintings, collages, assemblages, found objects and photographs-color, black and white, manipulated, composite-that point to the fluidity of meaning of a world in flux. The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with a foreward by Dennis Hopper that includes a selection of Mortensen's poetry, photographs, and paintings.

The third instalment of the epic Lord Of The Rings trilogy, in which he took one of the starring roles as Aragorn, may have swept the board at this years Oscars, but the self-effacing actor is genuine when he insists he still doesn't see himself as a Hollywood player. "I think I got lucky," says the softly-spoken star. Viggo Mortensen From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Viggo Mortensen (born October 20 in New York City ), is a Danish-American theater and movie actor , a published poet, photographer and painter. One of his most notable roles was that of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which elicited an overwhelming fan mail volume for this shy loner. He got a call one day asking him to replace the Irish actor Stuart Townsend , who, director Peter Jackson had decided, looked too young to be Aragorn. Viggo was asked to board a plane the next day to go to New Zealand . He hadn't read J. R. R. Tolkien 's The Lord of the Rings before, and he wouldn't have gone if it hadn't been for his son Henry, who had read the books and was extremely enthusiastic about them. Once in New Zealand, Mortensen immersed himself in his role, getting so deeply into character that at one point during the shooting, Jackson referred to him as "Aragorn" in conversation for over half an hour without Mortensen noticing.
