Alanis Morissette has been responsible for some of the catchiest radio songs of the past decade. Her hooks and melodies are consistently memorable and, like it or not, after a few listens it's almost impossible not to hum along. The problem has never been the music, but the pretentious and overly literal lyrics. Both "Jagged Little Pill" and "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" painted a picture of an obsessive ex-girlfriend with a little too much time on her hands. "Under Rug Swept," Morissette's latest release falls prey to the same shortcomings. The track "Flinch" is a perfect example of her stream-of-consciousness posturing. With lines like, "how long can a girl be tortured by you" the real question should be how many different ways can Morissette find to voice the same trite complaint? The rest of the album is more of the same. "So Unsexy", "Narcissus", and "21Things I Want In a Lover" could easily double as boy trouble letters sent to Seventeen. "Hands Clean", the album's first single, is the only song offering anything remotely interesting. Written as a hypothetical dialogue between her and a former lover she's surprisingly clever and subtle in her biting criticism of their failed relationship. Still, however cute the casing, the song is really just a new take on "You Oughta Know."

Bob Waliszewski Alanis Morissette Under Rug Swept
"Surrendering" applauds persistence. "So Unsexy" implies that it’s unproductive to dwell on perceived rejections ("little abandonments seem to sting so easily"). A young woman strives for a healthier sense of self on "Precious Illusions." "You Owe Me Nothing in Return" promises a partner "countless amounts of outright acceptance," however . . . Her willingness to love with no strings attached includes the promise, "You can ask to live by yourself or love someone else and I’ll support it." Despite listing some noble qualities, "21 Things I Want in a Lover" also demands an "uninhibited," "experimental," three-times-a-week sex partner. "Narcissus" tries to condemn selfishness, but profanities and crass expressions get in the way. While vague, "Hands Clean" is reportedly the singer’s recollection of a forbidden sexual relationship she shared with a much older man when she was about 14 years old. "Utopia," a song that yearns for grace, companionship and unconditional acceptance, leads

Alanis Morissette - Under Rug Swept
Home Reviews Albums 2002 Alanis returns with her third album after releasing the fantastic "Jagged Little Pill" and the dark "Supposed Former Infatuated Junkie". Here is the track by track review: "21 Things I Want In A Lover"
The opening track is definitely memorable, it sounds quite like "All I Really Want" from the "Jagged Little Pill" album. Single material. 9/10 "Narcissus"
Another catchy hit but could be annoying at times. 8/10 "Hands Clean"
The fantastic hit single. You've heard it yourself. 10/10 "Flinch"
A slower song which takes a couple of listens to get you into it. 8/10 "So Unsexy"
Very poppy and has the potential to be a single, but I can't seem to get into this song as much as the others. 7/10 "Precious Illusions"
This is going to be the second single and what a good choice she made. It's very similar to "You Oughta Know" but is very calm at times too. 9/10 That Particular Time
Another brilliant song, it's very catchy despite being a ballad. 8/10 A Man
Definitely my least favourite song on the album, as sounds like a leftover from the "Supposed..." album. It's very dark and glum, just a filler really. 6/10

Jagged Little Pill
Maverick/ Reprise Being dumped is no picnic in the park (duh). The ego gets bruised, and a certain skepticism kicks in, making it difficult to believe pretty words for long. Alanis Morissette knows all about this, judging from the bitter ditty "You Oughta Know," the first single from her new album. The song is a howl of rage that starts off sweetly when the 20-year-old singer purrs out the sarcastic opening line, "I want you to know that I'm happy for you/I wish nothing but the best for you both." Picking at the scab of ruined romance as a vortex of sound builds behind her, Morissette sings "And every time you speak her name/Does she know how you told me you'd hold me/Until you died, till you died?" Then she practically shrieks [189k .aiff] "But you're still alive." It's a sound of inchoate fury, the sound of a woman scorned. Morissette's voice skitters, yelps, soars, and bites, summoning appropriate emotions on demand. At times, Jagged Little Pill recalls the songwriting of Liz Phair Polly Jean Harvey , and Tori Amos - even if Morissette has little in common with those artists stylistically.

Jagged Little Pill
CD, Maverick/Warner Bros., USA, 1995 Since she rocketed to the top of the charts a few months back, former Canadian TV star Alanis Morissette has become my roommate Roger's breakup counselor, and I sympathize completely. The single "You Oughtta Know" is overplayed and overproduced, but it's still a pretty effective bit of radio-friendly fury. We've all felt like Alanis when she shrieks, "And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back/I hope you feel it!" But when Roger started playing Morissette's album at top volume all day, every day, she really started to irk me - and Rog wondered why. Well, Sinead O'Connor did the bitter-chick-with-guitar thing in 1988 - without outside producers. PJ Harvey played the castrating bitch-queen in 1992 - without dressing like a sex kitten. Tori Amos is working that Christian angst angle right now - without overly literal lines like "I sang Alleluia in the choir/I confessed my darkest deeds to an envious man." Sure, sure, Alanis has an ear for hooks, and this stuff sounds better sung than written. But "Jagged Little Pill" is just a more digestible version of other, better albums. It'll sell millions no matter how many stars it gets - because it was produced by the guy who sugar-coated Wilson Phillips to multiplatinum status, and because it's being hawked by none other than

Bob Waliszewski Alanis Morissette Jagged Little Pill
Propelled by the success of her debut album, Jagged Little Pill , Alanis Morissette has become one of the hottest properties in alternative rock-n-roll. How hot? In recent months, she has earned four Grammys, five Canadian Juno awards, heavy video rotation on MTV and VH-1, and album sales exceeding six million copies . Morissette has kept a stranglehold on the pop charts, spending seven weeks at number 1. Popular? No doubt. Critically acclaimed? Yes. But what are fans of this 21-year-old sensation being asked to swallow? Raunchy, church-bashing angst and some disturbing views on sexuality. All part of a CD described by Rolling Stone magazine as "uncensored documentation of her psychosexual former-Catholic-girl torments."

I first received this CD after many weeks awaiting it, because the Alanis hype was so great that product was continuously exhausted before all requests could be satisfied. I was allowed to go to review AlanisÕ concert the day of the show. Alanis has been on the cover of most (if not all) of the major music magazines on your local newsstand. Is all this hype deserved? Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
Maverick
Released: 3 Nov 98
Apparently, Alanis Morissette’s jagged little pill habit has gotten tragically out of hand. Sad to say, but in the three brief years separating freshman effort from sophomore offering*, she has become a junkie. A “supposed former infatuation junkie,” to be exact, an album title so god-awful pretentious even Prince/TheArtist/InexplicableSymbol would feel compelled to cringe. Fiona Apple: blanch. Garth Brooks: blush. [* Actually, more accurately, her “junior and senior theses,” as they were, in fact, preceded by Alanis’ early excursions into Debbie Gibson/Tiffany territory – 1991’s Alanis and 1992’s equally-cheesy Now Is The Time.] Of course, 1995’s Jagged Little Pill was no run-of-the-mill “freshman” effort. It was, unquestionably, a genuine, head-over-feet, fairy-tale phenomenon – propelled, in no small measure, by its two most successful singles: the ironically non-ironical “Ironic” and the fellatio-emblazoned “You Oughta Know” (the latter no doubt destined to be resuscitated by Monica Lewinsky when she embarks upon her inevitable 15-minute foray into Vegas cabaret). History records the rest: Grammys and Junos were bestowed by the boatload, and a steady stream of carnivorous imitators – piranha flocking to the freighter’s wake – was illegitimately spawned: Meredith Brooks’ gaudily autobiographical “Bitch”… Heather Nova’s Novocaine numbness… Jewel’s puerile poetry… Natalie Imbruglia’s putrid mewlings….

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

Maverick/Reprise Purchase Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie from Amazon.com
It's pretty dang easy to line up Alanis in the critical crosshairs. The cavalier hoser in me can point to the self indulgence, the hysterical navel-gazing, the canned "alternative-thin-yodelling-canadian-angry-grrlll" vibe. Reading her lyrics is like finding a freshman's spiral notebook journal it makes me wince, like "should I really be reading this self-probing"? It reads less like poetry and more like diary rants. But something keeps getting in the way, keeps me from pulling the trigger. I happen to appreciate good pop music when it enters my ears. In the same way that Jagged Little Pill molded the alternative sound into letter-perfect pop, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie will not be denied. Believe me, I tried. Self-indulgence or not, Morissette's lyrics do take chances. In particular that "notebook" quality, leads to interesting phrasing tricks and meters. For instance, on the first single "Thank U." the novel way she phrases the line "Thank you, disillusionment", makes disillusionment into a ironically soaring moment of epiphany a brilliant stroke. This album is filled with details like that, some subtle, some not. Just when you think Alanis is succumbing to her weaknesses, she turns it into gold.

Morissette yearns to be understood and embraced ("Can't Not"), and lists regrets after having compromised to earn another's approval ("Your Congratulations"). She grapples with forgiving her mother's past failures on "The Couch, "finally expressing deep love for her. "That I Would Be Good" claims a self-confidence independent of fluctuations in emotional state or physical appearance. Although somewhat crass and hopeless, "Would Not Come" describes the emptiness of carnality. "Thank U" and "Baba" reveal the artist's fascination with Eastern religion, gurus and meditation. She longs to be intimate with a married man on "I Was Hoping. "Romance involves rage, sex, pain, infidelity and abusiveness on "Sympathetic Character" and "Are You Still Mad." Profanity mars two tracks. Morissette's last album

    The Movie:
This concert film offers footage from Alanis Morissette's 2002 tour, combined with home video footage from the same tour of the singer discussing her thoughts on her music and life, along with some goofing around. Although I've always been a fan of the singers, this concert presentation shows that Morissette is a remarkably energetic live performer, especially in versions of "All I Really Want" and "Precious Illusions" that are more fierce than the album versions.
The concert presentation is a mixture of camcorder footage and what appears to be more professionally shot material. While a few shots here and there offer odd viewpoints, the majority of the concert captures the singer and backing band effectively, with not too much in the way of editing. The home video footage is mixed - some segments are insightful discussions of the singer's music and the accomplishments of the backing band. On the other hand, while some of the goofy segments are amusing, there are a few other goofy moments in the 150-minute program that could have been left on the editing room floor, as they don't really add much.

In Short : Decent compilation of Morisette's 1995 tour.
    The Movie:
As one would expect from a film like this that seems to be shot in many different ways, the video quality varies wildly as well; scenes go from crisp and clear to dark and grainy to looking as if they were shot with a home video camera(which is more than likely). In other words, it runs the entire span of possibilities- great to terrible (sometimes all within a matter of moments). Sound quality also is quite different throughout, from enjoyable representations of the sort of ambience that one would find at a concert to simply being basically clear to hazy and slightly muddy. Even at its best, it doesn't work quite as well sound-wise as some of the other concert discs that I've had the pleasure to watch, such as Sarah McLachlan's "Mirrorball" or the previously mentioned "Meeting People Is Easy". Like the video and the film itself, it's simply cut into oblivion; awkwardly edited into a whole documentary.
The music itself isn't bad at all, but the way that this film is edited together, it really doesn't give the music the presentation it deserves. It would have been nice if the footage from only one concert was used instead of cutting between what seems to be tons during the span of one song.

It's just too bad my buddy Stu Gotz couldn't be there, although I think his head might have exploded not knowing who to go after first. Anyway, I'm hanging at the New World Music Theatre waiting for Alanis. I'm a sensitive 90's guy, but I'm also afraid of rejection.
