The Mary Tyler Moore Show - 1970-1977 Show Summary

The Mary Tyler Moore Show was one of the most literate, realistic, and enduring situation comedies of the 1970s. Mary Richards was the idealized single career woman. She had come to Minneapolis after breaking up with a man she had been dating for four years. Ambitious, and looking for new friends, she moved into an older apartment building and went to work as an assistant producer of the local news show on television station WJM-TV. In her early 30s, Mary symbolized the independent woman of the 1970s. Mary's boss was WJM-TV News producer Lou Grant, an irascible, cantankerous, blustery man whose bark was much worse than his bite. The Mary Tyler Moore Show USA, CBS (MTM Enterprises), Sitcom, colour, 1977 Starring: Mary Tyler Moore, Edward Asner, Ted Knight A landmark US sitcom that returned Dick Van Dyke Show star Mary Tyler Moore triumphantly to the small-screen and gave a generation of single American women a TV character in whom they could finally believe. It is virtually impossible to describe to British readers the place that The Mary Tyler Moore Show occupies in the hearts of a certain generation of Americans, but even without a knowledge of the social revolution in the US, and the ripples that the women's movement was causing at the time, it is not difficult to understand why the show was such a huge success: it had 'class' written all over it. Tight writing, spot-on characterisations and fast-paced plots lifted the show piece out of the norm and into the rarefied heights of sitcom heaven. The production evidently functioned as a hothouse, nurturing, developing and honing talent to the extent that virtually all of the creative crew went on to further triumphs with such shows as Taxi The Bob Newhart Show and Cheers The format was straightforward enough: Mary Richards was the lead character, a single woman (she was to have been a divorcee, but the writers then decided to depict her as unmarried) who leaves New York following the break-up of a relationship and arrives in Minneapolis, with its freezing temperatures and biting winds. Here she gets a job in the newsroom at a local TV station, WJM, reporting to the news producer Lou Grant, a man who, at first, seems frostier than the weather but soon thaws to become a close friend - albeit a hard-edged and deeply cynical one. Mary's newsroom colleagues include the nervy but delightfully witty Murray Slaughter, the station's sole news writer; and the TV newsreader/anchorman Ted Baxter whose colossal stupidity is perfectly balanced by his colossal ego; among the other staff at WJM is Sue Ann Nivens, the catty presenter of

Hairstyle Blast From The Past
by Karen M. Shelton
Introduction
You may be too young to remember the original Dick Van Dyke show. After all, that was over three decades ago in the 60s. However, Mary's signature hair flip has endured through the decades and continues to go strong as a popular hair style. Cathy Moriarity, Ellen Barkin, Barbra Streisand and even First Lady Hillary Clinton has worn the modern version of the flip.
Jenna Elfman's 90s Version Of The Flip
What is even more fascinating is that Jenna Elfman, the very talented half of Dharma and Greg, is often seen with her own version of the flip. (Photo of Jenna from Star Magazine). Ironically Jenna plays the 2000 version of a madcap young married couple. While Mary was married to Rob, the TV writer, Jenna is married to Greg, the lawyer. Both women portrayed the wacky, but attractive wife. It seems only fitting that Jenna, in role as comedy wife would look so great in her own version of the flip.

MTM / CBS 'Mary Tyler Moore' House Up For Sale
  • Asking Price For Minneapolis Home Is $1.7 Million
  • Apr 28, 2004 12:38 pm US/Central MINNEAPOLIS (CBS) The "Mary Tyler Moore" house is up for sale with an asking price of nearly $1.7 million. The five-bedroom, six-bath Victorian home quietly went on the market in early March, but a "For Sale" sign only recently appeared on its lawn. Exterior shots of the 112-year-old home were used in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" during its run on CBS in the 1970s, although actress Mary Tyler Moore never set foot in the house during the show's production. The fictional character, Mary Richards, lived in a third-floor apartment. Her wacky neighbor was Rhoda Morgenstern. The owners, who've had the house since 1988, didn't say why they were selling, according to Tuesday's editions of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Previous owners in the early 1970s became so weary of uninvited guests that they stretched a banner saying "Impeach Nixon" outside to discourage television crews from taking additional exterior shots.

    The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Mary Tyler Moore Show was a long-running sitcom that appeared on CBS from , one of the most critically-acclaimed shows and one of the most beloved in television history. Mary Tyler Moore starred as Mary Richards, a 30ish single woman who worked as a news producer at WJM-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota . Her coworkers included the crusty manager Lou Grant (Ed Asner), newswriter Murray Slaughter (Gavin Macleod) and the buffoonish anchor Ted Baxter (Ted Knight). Mary's neighbors were the self-deprecating Rhoda Morgenstern ( Valerie Harper ) and the insincere landlady Phyllis (Cloris Leachman). Later series regulars included Betty White , who played Sue Ann Nivens (the sardonic and lascivious host of a show called, rather ironically given Sue Ann's off-screen persona, "The Happy Homemaker"); and Georgia Engel, who played Georgette, the somewhat dim but remarkably good hearted love interest of Ted Baxter. Unlike the characters in such earlier sitcoms as "That Girl," the single Mary wasn't rushing into getting married or having kids. Significantly, her neighbors and coworkers served as a nuclear family for her. There were numerous classic episodes of the series, in particular "Chuckles Bites the Dust" in which the WJM staff mourns (and laughs at) the bizarre death of a kiddie show host. The series ended in . In the final episode, everyone at WJM-TV is fired except for the supremely incompetent Ted. The cast tearfully said goodbye to one another.

With medical adviser Stephen A. Shoop, M.D. USA TODAY Mary Tyler Moore. Being able to view life through the eyes and heart of a child is a gift most people lose after dealing with the disappointments and demands of adulthood. But for Mary Tyler Moore, maintaining her youthful exuberance, openness and optimism is essential to living fully at any stage in life. "What most adults fail to remember," says the star of long-running Mary Tyler Moore Show , "is that childhood is often filled with challenges, fears, and uncertainties as daunting as any we face decades later." But sometimes fate steps in to bridge this generational gap of empathy and understanding. "I was diagnosed with 'juvenile' or Type 1 diabetes over 30 years ago," says the five-time Emmy-winning actress. "It was initially terrifying, but as an adult, I was much better equipped to deal with this challenge than a young child." Although Moore has since undergone multiple procedures to combat complications of her disease, she refuses to complain about her condition.

    THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW
I just heard that they're giving Mary Tyler Moore a statue in Minneapolis. Hey, why not? Who else do you think of when you think of that fair city (does anyone remember who Fran Tarkenton was)? I adored MTM on The Dick Van Dyke Show , so I was quite happy to follow her in her new role as the shy and awkward associate producer on WJM-Minneapolis. There are actually people today who criticize that show because of how provincial and "unrealistic" that news station was but 1) TV news at that time was provincial. In fact Ted Baxter was (admittedly or not) modeled after the TV anchorman of a small Los Angeles station, George Putnam (almost as big a jerk!), and 2) This is a TV show, not reality!
I'm happy to see that the show is just as popular as ever, even though I haven't seen it in years. My favourite characters in the cast were Phyllis and Sue Ann Nivens, but I loved everybody. I think I adored Phyllis because I've known women like her. Women who were "modern", liberal, and dramatic to the point of histrionic, and of course very cultured and cultivated. Yet up until Cloris Leachman created her, no character like that had ever been depicted on TV, and as far as I know, no one has since unless one considers her British counterparts, Edina and Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous . But Phyllis paved the way!
