MOORE, MARY TYLER U.S. Actor Mary Tyler Moore's most enduring contributions to television are in two classic sitcoms, The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-66) and The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-77), although she has appeared in the medium in a variety of roles both before and after these series. Her first on-camera television work was as a dancer, and it was as "Happy Hotpoint," a singing and dancing home appliance, that she first caught the public eye. Her first regular series role as "Sam" the receptionist on Richard Diamond, Private Detective , was notable primarily because it featured only her dancer's legs and voice. As Laura Petrie, the beautiful, talented and not-so-typical suburban housewife to comedy writer Rob (Dick Van Dyke) on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Moore earned critical praise (and Emmy Awards) as she laid the foundation for the wholesome but spunky identity that would mark her television career. Though she lacked their experience in television comedy, Moore was no mere "straight woman" to comedians Van Dyke, Carl Reiner, Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie; she managed to stake out her own comic identity as a lovely and competent housewife who was frequently thrown a curve by her husband's unusual friends and career. Thanks to the show's explorations of the Petries' courtship (they met while he was in the military and she a USO dancer), Moore was able to display her talents as both dancer and singer, as well as comedic actress, on the show. While

Perhaps today's generation, but then there is no need for them to be deprived since Mary Tyler Moore's talents can be appreciated in not only her current projects, but in various reruns all over the world. Ranked #22 in Entertainment Weekly's 100 Greatest Entertainers, Moore's life reads like some tragic movie-of-the-week; from failed marriages, alcohol addiction, sickness, family deaths, and many more compelling aspects that would give any Soap Opera a run for its money. Needless to say, her life has not been a walk in the park, and the troubles she battled in her personal life over the years, were hidden quite well behind the facade of "America's Sweetheart". Mary lives in New York with her husband, Dr. Robert Levine, whom she married in November 1983.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show
I personally think that the best accomplishment Mary Tyler Moore has ever made was doing the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Mary Richards (the part MTM played) was one of those people who was always there when you needed a favor. She would never say no. But other than being a softee Mary Richards was a role model. She had a great job, she was loved by everyone and although she wanted a relationship she was perfectly happy on her own. Mary Tyler Moore was admired by all but actually she and Mary Richards didn't have much in common at all.
THE CHARACTERS AND MARY:
WJM: The people who worked with Mary at the WJM newsroom were all men. They were, Lou Grant, Ted Baxter and Murray Slauter. Each of these men had fantasies about being married to Mary and each of them at one time or another had expressed their feelings to her. Lou and Mary went out on a date, Ted officially made Mary his girlfriend and Murray told Mary that he loved her. Though no relationships were actually had between Mary and her co-workers, they always had feelings for her.
Rhoda and Phyllis: Rhoda and Phyllis were Mary's two best friends who didn't get along with each other. They were total opposites. While Phyllis would want to go the the symphony, Rhoda would prefer going to a hockey game. They never got along with each other but always with Mary. Though Mary and Phyllis knew each other longer, I always thought of Rhoda and Mary as closer friends.

I adore Mary Tyler Moore - ever since I was a lad back in the 60's. She is the quinticential beautiful, strong, and caring heroine and comedienne. Welcome! Please press the button. Mary! I loved (I guess love, thanks to reruns) the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Great actors and actesses all. What a classic show. Following is a picture of the cast of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, it only took me 9 months to figure out how to get this to show up - - what a dope I am). I used to spend Saturdays at 9 p.m. glued to the tube every week watching that show. I was a stumbling, bumbling teenager in love with Mary (I am sure there were plenty of others) and all she represented. From left to right front row: Betty White (she is very nice - - when I was at Auburn we inagurated the Allen Ludden Memorial College Bowl Tournament. She donated some items to the College Bowl Hall of Fame in his honour and was gracious and friendly ). Georgia Engels and Mary. From left to right back row: Ted Knight, Gavin MacLeod, and Ed Asner. Two important actresses were not in the previous snap (because they left the show by the time the previous snap was taken - - to go on to their spinoffs: Rhoda and Phyllis.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970-77)
From 1974 to 1977, America had the rare treat of having first-run episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show The Bob Newhart Show , and Rhoda on television at the same time. All three were produced by Mary Tyler Moore's and her then-husband, Grant Tinker's, MTM Enterprises. And all three were perfectly poised between the traditional mainstream culture reflected in the television of the 1960s and the more farcical, cynical, sex-saturated depictions of young and not-so-young narcissists we have, today. Two of the shows Mary Tyler Moore and the spin-off, Rhoda, depicted the emerging paradox of American culture: growing freedom for women (and men) to shape their own lives, accompanied by a new sense of limits and a loss of optimism. In the show, Mary Tyler Moore plays Mary Richards, a well-integrated, genuinely nice, non-narcissistic character who is stuck with a less than ideal life, for a new, less optimistic, age. She works for a mediocre television station and, despite the fact that she is the best catch in America, she can't find a mate. The program also starred Ed Asner as Lou Grant, the outwardly hard nosed and gruff news editor who is inwardly a pussy cat. The late Ted Knight played Ted Baxter, as the television anchor whose outward appearance as an airhead conceals absolutely nothing underneath. He is self-worshipping, superficial and has no idea of the meaning of many of the stories he relates on the air, all of which makes him a good symbol for the popular culture that was developing in America. Like Diana Christensen, played by Faye Dunaway, in the movie

THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW U.S. Situation Comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show premiered on CBS in September 1970 and during its seven-year run became one of the most acclaimed television programs ever produced. The program represented a significant change in the situation comedy, quickly distinguishing itself from typical plot-driven storylines filled with narrative predictability and unchanging characters. As created by the team of James Brooks and Allan Burns, The Mary Tyler Moore Show presented the audience with fully-realized characters who evolved and became more complex throughout their life on the show. Storylines were character-based and the ensemble cast used this approach to develop relationships which changed over time. The program starred Mary Tyler Moore who had previously achieved success as Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Manage alerts What is this? NEW YORK (AP) Mary Tyler Moore has withdrawn from "Rose's Dilemma," the new Neil Simon play, scheduled to open off-Broadway in two weeks. Moore missed both the matinee and evening performances Wednesday, and her understudy, Patricia Hodges, went on, Jim Byk, a spokesman for Manhattan Theatre Club, said Thursday. Hodges will continue in the role. Mara Buxbaum, a spokeswoman for Moore, did not return phone calls, and Simon declined to comment on the situation, spokesman Bill Evans, said. But in a statement in The New York Times for Friday's editions, Buxbaum said, "Mary was devastated and completely debilitated personally and professionally. Mary has been working tirelessly for months but feels pushed out of this production." Moore was seen storming out the backstage door minutes before the 2 p.m. curtain on Wednesday, the Times said. Several sources close to the production said the actress had just received a brusque letter written by Simon reproaching her for not knowing her lines, according to the Times.
