How much deconstruction can one blond bear? Just about everyone has had a go at Marilyn Monroe. There have been more than 300 biographies, learned essays by Steinem and Kael, countless documentaries, drag queens, tattoos, Warhol silk screens and porcelain collector's dolls. Marilyn has gone from actress to icon to licensed brand name; only Elvis and James Dean have rivaled her in market share. At this point, she seems almost beyond comment, like Coca-Cola or Levi's. How did a woman who died a suicide at 36, after starring in only a handful of movies, become such an epic commodity? Muhammad Ali

47. William Travilla's Marilyn Monroe
Profile of the designer and his relationship with the actor offered.
http://www.marilynmonroe.ca/camera/galleries/costumes/travilla/
Leading costume designer William Travilla, known simply as "Travilla", first met Marilyn in 1950, when she asked if she could borrow his fitting room - he was one of several contract designers for Twentieth Century Fox - to try on a costume. They worked together on eight movies: Monkey Business (1952), Don't Bother to Knock (1952), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), There's No Business Like Show Business (1954), River of No Return (1954), The Seven Year Itch (1955), and Bus Stop (1956). In his long career, Travilla won an Oscar for his work on the Errol Flynn drama The Adventures of Don Juan (1948); he was nominated for his work on two Marilyn movies, There's No Business Like Show Business and Bus Stop.
Travilla designed the vast majority of Marilyn's most memorable costumes, including the gowns she wore to such devastating effect at public events such as the 1953 Photoplay awards. He helped to sew her into the sheer gold lame dress she had worn (briefly-it was deemed too revealing to pass the censors) in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, to go and claim her award for Hollywood's "Fastest Rising Star of 1952."
Marilyn autographed a nude calendar for Travilla with the words, "Billy Dear, please dress me forever. I love you, Marilyn."

Review by Stuart J. Kobak. Donald O'Connor, Mitzi Gaynor, and marilyn monroe have some delightful work here. Rated B for the content, and A for the technical quality of the DVD.
http://www.filmsondisc.com/dvdpages/theres_no_business_like_show_business.htm
There's No Business Like Show Business/B,A- Fox/1954/118/ANA 2.55 . I was surprised that I liked There’s No Business Like Show Business as much as I did this time out. My memory of the film did not create much expectation. The script is really little more than a string of musical numbers hung together like a strand of pearls. The story of the five Monahan's is their act.
Happily, quite a few of the musical numbers are delightfully executed, even though I find Ethel Merman especially hard to bare. My daughter squawked, “What a horrible voice.” I second the emotion. Donald O’Connor has a beautiful production number, A Man Chases a Girl . I never saw O’Connor put over a song with such elegance. The usually energetic Dan Daily is often a tad morose, but then he is saddled with Ethel Merman as his wife. Mitzi Gaynor is adorable as Katy Monahan. Her dance numbers with O’Connor are thoroughly delightful as is the wonderful work for the Monroe telephone number. Johnnie Ray, a hugely popular crooner at the time, is pretty stiff as the eldest son Steve who chooses the clothe over the greasepaint. Ray has the strangest way of creating vibrato in his songs with lateral jaw articulation and for some reason this left my daughter and I in stitches every time. We're Having a Heat Wave. ©Fox

MONROE, MARILYN
, movie star. Born Norma Jean(e) Mortenson in Los Angeles, Monroe was the daughter of Gladys Baker, an unmarried movie technician. Her mother's mental instability resulted in a childhood marred by foster homes, neglect, and abuse. At sixteen she married James E. Dougherty, a defense worker. During World War II an army photographer took pin-up pictures of her, which attracted the attention of other photographers. She was signed by a modeling agency and bleached her light brown hair. In 1946 she divorced Dougherty. The same year 20th Century-Fox signed her to a contract, and she became Marilyn Monroe. Her first bit part in Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! (1948) wound up almost entirely on the cutting room floor. The studio dropped her as did Columbia for whom she played a lead in the Grade B movie Ladies of the Chorus (1948). Then, in need of money, she posed nude for a calendar that upon her ascent to stardom became famous. With the help of various older men she got a series of small roles, most notably in The Asphalt Jungle (1950) as a crooked lawyer's "niece" and in All about Eve (1950) as a "graduate of the Copacabana School of Dramatic Art." Her rise was rapid, thanks to an intelligent, intensive publicity campaign orchestrated by Fox, which had signed her again and now recognized her box-office potential. She weathered revelations about the calendar and her mother's mental illness, and in 1952 appeared in her first starring role in the potboiler

Fem-Biographie: Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe
geboren am 1. Juni 1926 in Los Angeles gestorben am 4./5. August 1962 in Los Angeles amerikanische Schauspielerin 75.

Monroe, Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn, , American movie actress, b. Los Angeles as Norma Jean Baker. Raised in orphanages and first married at 14, Monroe became a world-famous sex symbol and, after her death, a Hollywood legend. She was noted for her distinctively breathy singing style and seductive film roles. At first patronized by critics, she studied acting and won more challenging roles. Her suicide at age 36 only increased her mystique. Her films include Niagara The Seven-Year Itch Bus Stop Some Like It Hot (1959), and The Misfits (1960). Monroe's second husband was Joe DiMaggio and her third was Arthur Miller See controversial study by N. Mailer (1973) and the play After the Fall (1963) by Miller; biographies by G. McCann (1988), M.
