From Bill Monroe to Dolly Parton, bluegrass holds its own
VIDEO WorldBeat heads for the hills to hear the sounds of bluegrass
Windows Media November 12, 1999 Web posted at: 4:24 p.m. EST (2124 GMT) A CNN WorldBeat Report LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CNN) Alison Krauss mixes it with folk; Dolly Parton used it to return to her roots with her latest album, "The Grass Is Blue." But attendees of the recent International Bluegrass Music Awards in Louisville's Palace Theater don't need these high-profile country singers to tell them that bluegrass, a country-music offshoot that traces its origins to before World War II, is cooler than ever. Bluegrass has become one of the fastest-growing forms of music in the United States. And with bluegrass bands hailing from as far afield as Japan and the Czech Republic, it's now becoming a truly international art form.

53. A Walk With The Spirit Of Bill Monroe
A Walk with the Spirit of bill monroe. bill monroe loved his property in Bean Blossom, Indiana, the site of his famous bluegrass festival.
http://www.beanblossom.com/BentleyTrail.html
A Walk with the Spirit of Bill Monroe Bill Monroe loved his property in Bean Blossom, Indiana, the site of his famous bluegrass festival. And well he should have, because it is a beautiful piece of hilly, heavily-wooded real estate. He would often take early morning walks around the property, pausing at certain places to appreciate the beauty of nature, or perhaps, to listen for the "ancient tones". WM Bentley accompanied Bill on some of these early morning excursions.
Earlier this week, Sharon Dillman, my wife Ailene, myself, and WM took a walk around this trail. Starting to the left of the stage, we walked down an ill-defined path which could have been a wagon road a hundred years ago but which is now re-taken by lush green foliage. Downhill to a spring-fed stream, we pass wild ferns and colorful wild flowers now in their spring blooming season. At the site of a small stream we find a newly-constructed narrow wooden foot bridge, "Not wide enough for golf carts", Bentley said, (because after all, this is a trail one should walk). Then, back up the hill on the stream's other side we walk in complete shade until reaching the bright sunlight of hippie-hill campground, where many new RV sites, complete with 30-amp electric and water, are located.
Across the open expanse of the campground, we come to the edge of the small lake where the trail reappears on the left side. Down again into deep shade, we walk a much wider trail with the lake on our right. Wooden benches have been erected at several scenic places. I can imagine a songwriter finding inspiration at some of these places, and I wonder if this might have happened to Bill Monroe.

Bluegrass Unlimited
Bill Monroe (1911 - 1996)
Bill Monroe "the Father of Bluegrass" lives on. But Bill Monroe, the man, has spent his last days on earth. He died on September 9, 1996, in Springfield, Tenn., at the of 84, four days short of his 85th birthday. Much has already been written about this remarkable individual. More will be in the days and years ahead. An artistic giant, his personal creation of a distinctive genre stands as an unprecedented accomplishment in the history of American popular music. William Smith Monroe was born on September 13, 1911, on Jerusalem Ridge near the little town of Rosine, in the hills of Ohio County, Ky. He was the youngest of eight children of James Buchanan Monroe (1857- 1928) and Malissa Vandiver Monroe (1870-1921). His father, a farmer who raised crops, mined coal, and cut timber on his land, was a fine dancer; his mother played accordion, harmonica, and fiddle. At age 10, Bill took up the mandolin. (His older, musically-inclined siblings had already laid claim to the more desired fiddle and guitar.) He got pointers on the instrument from Hubert Stringfield, who farmed on the Monroe land. Later Bill evolved his own approach, combining melody ideas from hoedown fiddling with blues guitar picking a formidable chorded rhythm chop. Bill was occasionally lorded over by his siblings. Having poor vision and crossed eyes, he was often teased by strangers and unable to participate in many childhood activities. His vision was later corrected, but a proud desire to prove his worth - and a "lonesome" feeling that was to so characterize bluegrass - burned within him.

A Tribute to Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys
In 1938, Bill Monroe and his brother Charlie broke up their successful duet act, the Monroe Brothers. That same year Bill formed his own band, the Blue Grass Boys. In 1939 he joined the Grand Ole Opry and was a member until his death in 1996. For more than half a century, being a Blue Grass Boy was the crowning achievement of many musicians' careers; for others, a stepping stone to establishing their own bands. This site is intended as a tribute to all the musicians who contributed to the creation of Bill Monroe's music, as well as an information resource for research. The musicians are divided into several groups: Regular: Musicians who were hired as regular members of the band on an ongoing basis. You can view the list of regular Blue Grass Boys sorted any of several ways: Fill-in: Musicians who served as temporary Blue Grass Boys, for a single show or a short period. Studio: Studio musicians who appeared on recordings only.
