22. Tribute To Spike Milligan
A tribute to the funniest man that ever lived spike milligan including an extract from Puckoon
http://members.aol.com/mrwirrall/mrwirrall.com/Tribute_To_Spike_Milligan.html
The Milligan had suffered from his legs terribly. During the war in Italy. While his mind was full of great heroisms under shell fire, his legs were carrying the idea, at speed, in the opposite direction. The Battery Major had not understood.
'Gunner Milligan? You have been acting like a coward.'
'No sir, not true. I'm a hero wid coward's legs, I'm a hero from the waist up.'
'Silence! Why did you leave your post?'
'It had woodworm in it, sir, the roof of the trench was falling in.'
'Silence! You acted like a coward!'
'I wasn't acting sir!'
'I could have you shot!'
'Shot? Why didn't they shoot me in peacetime? I was still the same coward.'
'Men like you are a waste of time in war. Understand?'
'Oh? Well den! Men like you are a waste of time in peace.' 'Silence when you speak to an officer,' shouted the Sgt. Major at Milligan's neck. All his arguments were of no avail in the face of military authority. He was court martialled, surrounded by clanking top brass who were not cowards and therefore biased. 'I may be a coward, I'm not denying dat sir,' Milligan told the prosecution. 'But you can't really blame me for being a coward. If I am, then you might as well hold me responsible for the shape of me nose, the colour of me hair and the size of me feet.'

Spike Milligan, who has died aged 83 of kidney failure, was once talking about Eccles, his favourite Goon Show character. "Eccles represents the permanency of man, his ability to go through anything and survive. They are trying to get off a ship on the Amazon and lower a boat. When they get to the shore Eccles is already there. "'How did you get ashore?'

The Goon Show Depository
Ahhh, the halcyon days before the advent of Political Correctness and alternative humour. The days when if it was funny then the joke was performed. The class system that really counted, ie those who got it and those who didn't! The Goon Show was the first real "Alternative Humour". It was truly different from the normal Music Hall type comedy that was recycled for British radio. It didn't pander to the naiveté that inflicted the funny bones of post war Britain. This was truly cerebral humour in it's truest sense. After all, the imagery of the crazy situations had to be present in the listener's mind before the humour struck home. The Goon Show was a revelation to all the latent eccentrics who populated the UK. Goon Show humour bridged political persuasion, the British class system. Academics, white-collar workers, blue-collar workers and even those just wearing vests all shared in the crazy, zany antics of Bluebottle, Eccles and Neddie et al. I have been a fan of the Goon Shows for as long as I can remember. Certainly since the mid 60's when my father used to play recordings of them to myself and my brother. More recently I have renewed my interest, allied with the advent of new technology, i.e. MP3 compressed audio. I am now setting out on an adventure to encode every episode of the Goons that I can get my hands on. I then want to make these files available to anyone who wants them!

Wednesday, March 6, 2002 Tiddlywink showdown
Local historian Mike Petty takes a look at a celebrated day of reckoning in Cambridge with protagonists fuelled by Babycham and Guiness University 'winkers' in action THE headlines last week were dominated by the news of the death of Spike Milligan, the last of the Goons, and the tribute paid to him by one of his greatest fans, Prince Charles. Then came the furore caused by a flippant remark in Australia about Aborigines by Prince Philip, who is among other things Chancellor of Cambridge University. But there is a connection between the university, the Prince and the Goons that seems so far to have gone unrecorded and it concerns the ancient sport of tiddlywinks The pastime was first patented in London in 1888. It essentially consists of teams competing to squidge winks into a pot, players take turns and the first one to get them all in wins. Not much to it, you might think. But then in 1955 great academic brains did begin to think about the technicalities and at Cambridge University a group of undergraduates got together to form a club for the sole purpose of playing tiddlywinks. It was the first in history but being the first they had great difficulty in finding other groups to play against.

Beachcomber
Captain Foulenough BBC Television Series More Nonsense Threadgold's Thoroughgrip Garterettes ... Edwards home page In 1924 John Cameron Audrieu Bingham Michael Morton took over authorship of the column "By The Way" in the Daily Express . He inherited the pseudonym 'Beachcomber' from his predecessors on the job (the column had existed since 1917), but he was to make that name forever his own by virtue of his astonishing output and success: Morton wrote the column for over 50 years, six times a week, until 1965 when the column became a weekly feature, and continued to the last column in November 1975. J B Morton used an eccentric cast of regular characters in his sketches, which frequently caricatured self-important and high-brow public figures. We can still enjoy his wonderful stuff; see below, and the other pages on this site.
Beachcomber's legacy
The late, great Spike Milligan said: "As schoolboys, my brother and I - both Irish, by the way - worshipped Beachcomber ... and used to paste his paragraphs in a book, and that led to the birth of the Goon Show." The Goon Show , as we know, influenced almost everything.
