Unlike American political comics, he's actually funny. This piece reminded me of one of his more famous pieces during canadian discussions about the people's right to make policy via referendum, Mercer skewered Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day by declaring that there should be a national referendum demanding that he change his name to Doris. Stockwell Day was (shall we say) not popular and easy to pick on, but Mercer was able to generate over a million signatures on his referendum. Stockwell Day disappeared soon thereafter into the mists of the ex-politician, deservedly so. What California could have learned from a guy like Rick Mercer. We might have avoided this whole mess. One can only wonder what he'd say about the recall election. I'm sure none of the candidates would have enjoyed it, but we would have... One other continuing gag Mercer does, by the way, is called Talking with Americans , where he travels south of the border and, posing as a journalist, convinces Americans to say the most outrageous and stupid things.
