Spring has arrived in Washington, DC and the Cultural Center marks the season with two very different exhibits . Mystical Rose, Star of the Sea is an exhibit of brilliant, colorful paintings of the Blessed Virgin in her many manifestations. Faith of Our Fathers and Mothers: The Role of Faith in the Greatest Generation pays tribute to the faith traditions of Americans during WWII. Both of these exhibits are testaments to the strength of faith and the many different ways we honor God in our lives. Father G. Michael Bugarin

May 07, 2004 Disons que je reconnais le style Breaking news at the dinner hour on a Friday afternoon: Prime Minister appoints four candidates. Bill ("I've got a lot of time for Billy") Cunningham in Burnaby-Douglas.
John Bethel in Edmonton-Somewhere.
Julia ("We tried to chase her out, but now we like her fine") Turnbull in Calgary South Centre.
Dale Muti in Calgary-Somewhere-Else. Fun question: Why can't the PM's men win a fair fight?
Second fun question: Why are they overwhelmingly men? UPDATE, minutes later : Sine Chadi's taking it well. I called him in Edmonton and he's got basically a wryly humorous take on the whole business. He says he got called in the middle of Friday afternoon by someone in the Prime Minister's Office — he doesn't know who, which strikes me as part of his problem (remember "Who do you know in the PMO?" Remember when that question was going to be irrelevant?) — telling him it was nothing personal but Martin had a preferred player in Edmonton East. Bethel, to wit. Despite all you read elsewhere on the net, not every Liberal on the outs is prepared to take the party down with him: Chadi, a former Alberta provincial MLA (which gives him more political experience, right there, than Bethel can brag) said he's resigned to his fate; he really does believe he'd have been welcome as a candidate anywhere except where a ranking Martini wanted to make an easy go of things; and he wishes Bethel luck.

VANCOUVER, SATURDAY MAY 18, 2002:
On May 18, 1952, in defiance of the authorities who refused to allow him to cross the border, Paul Robeson stood on the back of a flat bed truck on the US-Canada border and sang songs of defiance and solidarity to 40,000 people. 50 years later, on May 18, 2002 activists from both Canada and the United States, organized Here We Stand! , a free concert at the same location to commemorate the 1952 event. The issues dear to Paul Robeson - social justice, freedom, and civil rights - are as pertinent now are they were then.

PAUL WOLFOWITZ Deputy Secretary of Defense On February 5, 2001, President Bush announced his intention to nominate Dr. Paul Wolfowitz to be Deputy Secretary of Defense . He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on Feb. 28th and sworn in March 2, 2001 as the 28th Deputy Secretary of Defense. This is Dr. Wolfowitz's third tour of duty in the Pentagon. For the last seven years, Dr. Wolfowitz has served as Dean and Professor of International Relations at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of The Johns Hopkins University. SAIS is widely regarded as one of the world's leading graduate schools of international relations with 750 students, studying on campuses in Washington, D.C.; Nanjing, China; and Bologna, Italy. As Dean, he led a successful capital campaign that raised more than $75 million and doubled the school's endowment. Also under his leadership, the curriculum and facilities were modernized and new faculty and programs were added to shift the school's focus from the Cold War to the era of globalization. From 1989 to 1993, Dr. Wolfowitz served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in charge of the 700-person defense policy team that was responsible to Secretary Dick Cheney for matters concerning strategy, plans, and policy. During this period Secretary Wolfowitz and his staff had major responsibilities for the reshaping of strategy and force posture at the end of the Cold War.

KaZaA rose to prominence only after Napster was shut down. Now that RIAA lawyers have proved they can subpoena the names of KaZaA users from their ISPs, expect a mass migration to anonymous, encrypted P2P networks designed specifically to fix the known vulnerabilities in KaZaA. Earth Station 5 But what about Americans worried about the prospect of a bank-breaking lawsuit? Should you take the RIAA up on its amnesty offer? Maybe not. The "Clean Slate" program promises that the RIAA won't pursue legal action against P2P pirates who send in a notarized

Joan was born in 1412, the daughter of a tenant farmer at Domrýmy, on the borders of the duchies of Bar and Lorraine. In 1415, the Hundred Years War between England and France entered a crucial phase when the young King Henry V of England invaded France and won a series of decisive victories against the forces of King Charles VI. By the time of Henry's death in August 1422, the English and their French-Burgundian allies controlled Aquitaine and most of northern France, including Paris. Charles VI, long incapacitated, died one month later, and his son, Charles, regent from 1418, prepared to take the throne. However, Reims, the traditional city of French coronation, was held by the Anglo-Burgundians, and the Dauphin (heir apparent to the French throne) remained uncrowned. Meanwhile, King Henry VI of England, the infant son of Henry V and Catherine of Valois, the daughter of Charles VI, was proclaimed king of France by the English.

"Crumbling Loaf, where were you on the night of 25th May 2004? And were you carrying any matches? You cheeky young scamp! A very powerful piece though, and well executed. Conceptually perfect. But I should not jest about such a tragedy. I mean, this is Brit Art's 9/11! Imagine if you were Sarah Lucas and you'd just sold a load of fucking rubbish to some Tory cunt with too much money. And then his warehouse burnt down. You'd be distraught wouldn't you? I bet they're all inconsolable! Sea Turtles worth more alive!
I have always been fascinated by turtles. We use to own two small terrapins who were wonderful to watch. Just looking at the pictures of these magnificent creatures astounds me. Any way of helping them to stay arond should be supported, especially if this report does show that tourism is worth more than killing them. The key here appears, as is so often the case, to get the money to the people who actually live in these areas rather than to nameless International organisations who simply siphon off the money for profit. Perhaps island tourist co-operatives could be a way? Posted by paulgoodison at 08:00 AM in Environment Comments (0) TrackBack (0)

The Unethical Ethicist? usually commute by train to my job in the City. Recently, at my boss's request, I drove to work so as to have my car available for taking board members to a meeting. While heading towards the office, I missed a turning, and found myself almost in Docklands before I was able to turn back. Should I claim mileage for the whole distance or only what it should have been?" I spotted this unsigned query in the May 6 London Times . It was the question of the day in the Ethicist, and something about it didn't ring true. The Ethicist is the column by Randy Cohen that originated in the weekly New York Times Magazine in 1999, and since last September has also run daily in the London Times Cohen doesn't see anything wrong with the above query, and you'd think he'd be the guy to ask. But even crack ethics professionals get one wrong occasionally. Consider this. On September 15, 2002, Cohen fielded three questions in the New York Times Magazine . This was the third: "I usually commute by bus or train to my job in upper Manhattan. Recently, at my boss's request, I drove to work to have my car available for transporting board members to a meeting. I missed the Manhattan exit, found myself in Brooklyn and ended up almost going to Staten Island before eventually finding my way to work. May I claim mileage for the whole distance I traveled, or only what it should have been?" The question was signed by a woman in Westport, Connecticut.

Blah, Blah, Blah
By: Stryker on I'd like to write about movies. I've got 400 DVD's and I'm usually watching AMC, TCM or Fox most of the time. You'd think I could come up with something interesting that didn't involve making fun of the films. I'd like to write about music, but I don't think I'm too qualified for that gig. However, I've been tossing around the idea of deconstructing ABBA's entire catalog, under the title, "ABBA: Forgettable Fun or Serious Social Commentary?" I could do the same with the Bee-Gees New York Mining Disaster is one of the most weirdly great songs I've ever heard. I could do a lot of that, but then everyone would know that I'm a serious 70's disco freak. Finally, I want to write for the Weekly World News. That is my dream. It's fake, but all the best news usually is. Email Stryker

Memorial Day
By: Sgt. Mom on With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
