Cyberbrethren
Welcome, Cyberbrethren.
Looking for more than fluffy "Christian lite" websites? Want something more than what you get on a Hallmark greeting card? Are you looking for a blog that actually says something of significance? You've found the right one. Cyberbrethren is about theology, about church happenings, about Lutheranism, about Roman Catholicism, about Protestants, about agnostics, atheists and everything in between. It is a mix of encouragement, humor, insight, and news reports. It is for laypersons and clergy. I subscribe to the largest church news service in the world, Ecumenical News International, and share these reports frequently. It's a great way to stay informed about developments in world Christendom as they happen, and learn of new resources from solid Christian publishers when they become available.

(AP) Pope John Paul II turned 84 Tuesday, beaming as well-wishers sang "Happy Birthday" and thanking God for the "gift of life."
The frail pontiff insisted on keeping up his regular busy schedule but set aside time for a birthday lunch and cake with his closest aides. The occasion also was marked by publication of his latest book, which mixes memories from his native Poland, a touch of self-criticism and a defense of priestly celibacy. "It will be a regular working day and above all a thanks to God for the gift of life," said Vatican spokesman Joaquin-Navarro Valls. He reported that the Vatican had been flooded with birthday greetings for John Paul. John Paul, who marked 25 years in the papacy in October and has since become the third-longest serving pope in history, is pushing ahead despite Parkinson's disease and hip and knee ailments. He plans a two-day trip to Switzerland early next month, his first foreign travel since a pilgrimage to Slovakia in September.

Fractal of the Day
by Jim Muth

James Albert Muth has become well-known for his Fractal of the Day (FOTD). Jim joined contains photo ) the "Fractal-Art Discussion List" not too long after it's creation. And it was not long before he started publishing the now popular FOTD with it's first image. Here you can see incredible fractal depictions resulting from Jim's explorations in that area where mathematics becomes art. Jim uses the great FREEWARE program Fractint for his computer generated graphics.
Until Jim establishes his own website for these fantastic creations, this first and original hosting will not only have the daily images but also his discussion-list-email which goes along with each graphic image. Occasionally there have been FOTDs sent to the Usenet Newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.fractals , where Jim first started posting his images on April 22, 1997 (and some have been known in the past to be at alt.fractals.pictures ). Also, there are various websites that archive images from these newsgroups. If you would like a full set of the formulas and parameters that were used to create all of the FOTD images since the beginning, then please visit Les StClair's website
The actual number of FOTD pages that exist here may vary, depending on the total size of the emails and images (current webspace is limited to around three hundred megabytes). There may be anywhere from a few months to several year's worth of webpages. Each FOTD webpage will be named after the FOTD date, as in the following:

About Columnists Blog ... Donate Free Market Medicine by Rep. Ron Paul, MD
by Rep. Ron Paul, MD
Last week the congressional Joint Economic committee on which I serve held a hearing featuring two courageous medical doctors. I had the pleasure of meeting with one of the witnesses, Dr. Robert Berry, who opened a low-cost health clinic in rural Tennessee. His clinic does not accept insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid, which allows Dr. Berry to treat patients without interference from third-party government bureaucrats or HMO administrators. In other words, Dr. Berry practices medicine as most doctors did 40 years ago, when patients paid cash for ordinary services and had inexpensive catastrophic insurance for serious injuries or illnesses. As a result, Dr. Berry and his patients decide for themselves what treatment is appropriate. We can hardly expect more government to cure our current health care woes. As with all goods and services, medical care is best delivered by the free market, with competition and financial incentives keeping costs down. When patients spend their own money for health care, they have a direct incentive to negotiate lower costs with their doctor. When government controls health care, all cost incentives are lost. Dr. Berry and others like him may one day be seen as consumer heroes who challenged the third-party health care system and resisted the trend toward socialized medicine in America.

An Infamous Ruling
by Paul Craig Roberts
by Paul Craig Roberts
May 17 is the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court decision that used federal force to integrate public schools in the US. The anniversary will be widely celebrated in print. Jumping the gun by several weeks, The Nation devoted its May 3 issue to celebrating Brown. The magazine celebrated early, because the editors fear that Brown’s anniversary might pass with insufficient notice by those who should most treasure the decision. Many on the liberal-left and in black civil rights circles have soured on Brown and regard the decision as contributing little to the "black freedom struggle" and even as a disservice to blacks. The celebratory May 3 issue carries an advertisement for The Failures of Integration, a new book by Sheryll Cashin, a Georgetown Law School professor and former clerk for Thurgood Marshall. Derrick Bell, a former NAACP Legal Defense Fund attorney, has written that Brown was based on unwarranted faith in integrationist ideals and has harmed black education. David Garrow, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Martin Luther King, Bearing the Cross, believes that the standoffishness of the liberal-left from its handiwork is allowing conservatives to kidnap King’s birthday, permitting "right-wing politicians like President George W. Bush" to
