The Life You Save May Be Your Own
An American Pilgrimage by Paul Elie Biography/Religion
April 2003
ISBN: 0-374-25680-2 Read an excerpt In the middle of the twentieth century, four American Catholics, working independently of one another, came to believe that the best way to explore the quandaries of religious faith was in writing in works that readers of all kinds could admire. The Life You Save May Be Your Own is their story a vivid and enthralling account of great writers and their power over us. Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk in Kentucky; Dorothy Day the foundress of the Catholic Worker movement and its penny newspaper in New York, Flannery O'Connor a "Christ-centered" literary prodigy in Georgia; Walker Percy a doctor in New Orleans who quit medicine to write fiction and philosophy. A friend came up with a name for them the School of the Holy Ghost and for three decades they exchanged letters, ardently read one another's books, and grappled with what one of them called a "predicament shared in common." A pilgrimage is a journey taken in light of a story, and in

"Subtle energy" is also referred to as chi, prana, Holy Spirit, manna, ether, or-gone, bio-magnetism and zero-point, among many other names in our current vocabulary. Regardless of the label, it appears to contribute to many phenomena not currently explained by conventional science. "Subtle energy" refers to the medium through which consciousness acts on the realm of matter and energy. According to a National Institutes of Health study, at least 52 terms are used for "subtle energy": chi, prana, holy spirit, manna, ether, orgone, biomagnetism and zeropoint, among many others in our current vocabulary. Regardless of the label, it appears to contribute to many phenomena not currently explained by conventional science: telekinesis, remote sensing, telepathy, gut or heartbased intuition, healing by prayer or other psychic means, biocommunication between species, etc. Since these phenomena have tangible effects that can be documented but not explained by the known principles of the electromagnetic (E/M) field of matter/energy, they require that we hypothesize another force through which conscious intent acts on the affected objects, senses and cells. Some researchers believe a fuzzy part of the electromagnetic spectrum, beyond gamma rays, constitutes this force but that it has not yet been discovered due to the lack of refined instrumentation. Just as the harnessing of radio waves and Xrays had to await the development of new technologies, say these researchers, the development of more advanced machines will enable humans to make use of this fuzzy E/M field.

Bluffer's Guide to Foreign Exchange Lingo
Posted by pk at 02:18 PM The FT has an amusing bluffer's guide to foreign exchange (and options) lingo in a supplement today. Here are some highlights the best of which is Vega: The Greeks . Uniquely, both novices and those who have mastered options can claim "this is all Greek to me," because the Greek alphabet plays an unfeasibly large role. At least this ensures the language is not Spartan. Delta . A dry start, despite its name, to our ramble through ancient Greece. Delta measures the sensitivity of an option price to changes in the price of the underlying commodity. Also known as the hedge ratio by non-classicists, although that is a prickly subject. Gamma . It hardly needs spelling out but gamma measures how fast delta changes given a unit change in the underlying asset. Kid's stuff really. A lower gamma makes an option easier to hedge. Theta . The change in the option premium for a given change in the period to expiry. Also known as time decay. This can be even more painful than tooth decay as the value of your option melts before your eyes. Vega . Those still paying attention will have spotted this is not a Greek word at all, but an American singer-songwriter. Vega is the change in the price of an option that results from a 1 per cent change in volatility. Higher uncertainty results in a higher premium. Curiously, the options gods have yet to come up with the definition of Luka.

Midway through our conversation about Fresh Air Fiend , Paul Theroux reminds me that during the 15 years in which he wrote the 49 travel essays and articles collected here, he also wrote a major book on China (Riding the Iron Rooster), three additional travel books, a controversial memoir about his friendship with V.S. Naipaul (In Sir Vidia's Shadow), and more than a handful of novels (including My Secret History, Millroy the Magician, and Kowloon Tong). Something like a dozen books in all. "It's not that I was writing these pieces with my left hand," Theroux says, "but I was doing other things at the same time. These pieces illuminate those books, and those books derive somewhat from the experiences recorded here. There's a certain synchronicity in writing travel pieces and also living my life as a novelist and a travel writer." This is disheartening. You'd expect perhaps even hope that there'd be a significant decline in quality in these occasional pieces, written over the years for publications as varied as Outside magazine, The New York Times, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. And, no doubt, readers will have their favorites and less favorites among them. But in each of the pieces collected in

Where's Marty Stouffer when you need him?
Last October, we noticed a preying mantis laying her eggs in a tree near our garden. We invaded her privacy and snapped a few photos.
Yesterday we noticed this shimmering flurry of motion in the tree: the eggs were hatching.
The baby mantii emerge from the seam in the top center of the sac (where the tiny white circle with a black dot is just below the branch's shadow. That's a baby mantis.)
The babies crawl down the sac, looking like slithering tadpoles, then travel to the hanging mass of mantii down at the bottom of the sac.
Once their bodies have filled out and taken proper form, they crawl back up the hanging mass of their siblings to the sac, and then on up to the branch.
Once in the branch, they hang upside down some more.
But they have to beware of predators; here you can see an ant has captured and stunned a baby mantis and is carrying it off.
Most of the mantii avoided danger though.

Paul Saffo: Trading In A Cloud Of Electrons
In its latest issue, BusinessWeek Magazine publishes a special report, " E-Biz Strikes Again! ," which states that after transforming the book, music and travel industries, the Internet is well on its way to deeply affect six more industries, such as jewelry or real estate sales. The online version of this report includes an interview of Paul Saffo from the Institute for the Future, " Trading In A Cloud Of Electrons ." In it, Saffo talks about the big changes that the Web has brought to business and culture. He also delivers some provocative thoughts about what's next. He says that services will replace physical products as business opportunities. For example, he thinks that the auto makers will give you cars for free, making money by selling you lots of services , such as a $30 chip which will transform your car into a Ferrari-class vehicle. Here is the introduction to this interview. More than most Silicon Valley technology forecasters, Paul Saffo likes to squint. His job as a director at think tank the Institute for the Future in Menlo Park, Calif., is to look a full 10 years over the horizon. In 1997, he predicted sensors would become the next wave of information-technology innovation. Only today is the rest of the world talking about radio-frequency identification chips and other sensors heading into the mainstream.

Maybe. Entertainment Weekly says Dylan's people have called the producers of "American Idol" asking if he could be a guest judge. Both Paul McCartney and Dylan could show up as guest judges on next season's "American Idol." The producers have also asked McCartney to be a judge and he's said to be interested. The show's executive producer confirmed that McCartney is interested and that Dylan's reps have actually contacted the show about having Dylan appear.
