The Road to Windows Longhorn 2003
UPDATE. On August 19, 2003, I obtained the first legitimate depictions of Microsoft's planned Longhorn "Aero" user interface! Jump ahead to see what it looks like... At the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2003 trade show in New Orleans in May 2003, Microsoft finally revealed its roadmap for Longhorn, the next major Windows desktop version, and the successor to Windows XP. Longhorn, as readers of this site know, will be the most dramatic and exciting release of Windows ever, and the most important update to the product since Windows 95. As I noted in my first Longhorn preview , published almost a year and a half ago, Longhorn has long been wrapped in mystery, with conflicting reports about the product's features and an unprecedented number of purposefully forged screenshots, video clips, and technical documents. In that first preview, I played the role of debunker, forced to document the many Longhorn fakes out there, explain why they weren't real, and then detail the information about Longhorn I knew to be correct. This year, things are becoming more clear, thanks to a suddenly open and communicative Microsoft, and the all-to-obvious fakes are fewer. So here's what we know about Longhorn, circa mid-2003.
How we get there, when it happens

Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz Interview with Sam Tannenhaus, Vanity Fair
Q: What do you think all the conspiritorial talk is? Do you have any notion, in Europe and here? What are people looking at this way? Wolfowitz: I think it's pretty obvious and I think it's pretty disgraceful but all you can do is ignore it and go on and get the job done. Q: What is it? I mean some say anti-Semitism. I guess in Europe that would be Wolfowitz: I just said all I'm going to say about it. Q: Okay. There's a question now as to whether in Iraq itself Wolfowitz: You know it's completely out in the open who holds what views in this Administration. You couldn't be more transparent about what the arguments are. The most significant thing that has produced what is admittedly a fairly significant change in American policy is the events of September 11th which are going to count as one of the If you had to pick the ten most important foreign policy things for the United States over the last 100 years it would surely rank in the top ten if not number one. It's the reason why so much has changed, and people who refuse to look at that, for whatever reason, or are unwilling to face up to the implications of that then go around and look for some nefarious explanation. But it's shameful.

Welcome to the Molecule of the Month page! Each month a new molecule will be added to the list on this page. The links will take you to a page at one of the Web sites at a University Chemistry Department or commercial site in the UK, the US, or anywhere in the world, where useful (and hopefully entertaining!), information can be found about a particularly interesting molecule. If you wish to contribute a Molecule of the Month page, just email me the URL and I'll add you to the list at the next opportunity. (There's generally a 2-3 month waiting list, so this gives you plenty of time to write and polish your page).

10. CIN - Apostolic Letter Ad Tuendam Fidem, Pope John Paul II, 1998
Issued motu proprio by Pope John paul II on 28 may, 1998. Amends canon law. Preceded by a brief explanation of why this was necessary.
http://www.cin.org/jp2/adtuen.html
AD TUENDAM FIDEM OFFICIAL TRANSLATION Consequently, once this lacuna in the Church's universal legislation had become clear, and given the compelling need to forestall and refute the theological opinions being raised against this second category of truths, the Holy Father decided to promulgate the Apostolic Letter Ad tuendam fidem, by which precise norms are established in canon law regarding the second category of truths indicated in the second paragraph of the concluding formula of the Professio Fidei, through modifications to canons 750 and 1371, n. 1 of the CIC and to canons 598 and 1436 of the CCEO. JOHN PAUL II APOSTOLIC LETTER MOTU PROPRIO AD TUENDAM FIDEM BY WHICH CERTAIN NORMS ARE INSERTED INTO THE CODE OF CANON LAW AND INTO THE CODE OF CANONS OF THE EASTERN CHURCHES TO PROTECT THE FAITH of the Catholic Church against errors arising from certain members of the Christian faithful, especially from among those dedicated to the various disciplines of sacred theology, we, whose principal duty is to confirm the brethren in the faith (Lk 22: 32), consider it absolutely necessary to add to the existing texts of the Code of Canon Law and the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches new norms which expressly impose the obligation of upholding truths proposed in a definitive way by the Magisterium of the Church, and which also establish related canonical sanctions. 1. From the first centuries to the present day, the Church has professed the truths of her faith in Christ and the mystery of his redemption. These truths were subsequently gathered into the Symbols of the faith, today known and proclaimed in common by the faithful in the solemn and festive celebration of Mass as the Apostles' Creed or the Nicene- Constantinopolitan Creed.

Wolves take game five
The Wolves' attempt to send the Western Conference finals back to Los Angeles for a sixth game, in such splendid shape midway through that final period, took a faltering turn down the stretch. In the end, though, their lead was big enough, their poise was steady enough and their aim at the foul line was true enough for a 98-96 victory in Game 5 Saturday night. With the victory, the Wolves pulled within one game in the best-of-seven series, trailing 3-2 as it shifts to Staples Center on Monday night.

14. Paul Harvey Tiger R6 Build
Notes, pictures and tips that may be of interest to other builders. Help, Current task, details, sponsors and links.
http://www.foundation-it3.demon.co.uk/paulh/r6build/
Paul Harvey's Tiger R6 Build Site.......Car Finished! (more or less) Welcome to my build web site I finally gave in to the temptation to publish the build progress or (lack of it) on the web so here it is. Don't expect anything flash here just some notes and pictures that may be of interest to other builders. The car I'm building is the Tiger R6, it will run a 1.8 Zetec with Weber 40's, 13 inch wheels and very little else. The car is being built for the Kit Car Championship, so no trim, windscreens or heaters etc on this one. The regulations also insist on strict safety modifications and a few minor deviations from the standard car e.g.: No carbon fibre. I wanted to build a 7 type and after much research the Tiger R6 was finally chosen. The decision was based on many reasons, I think its a great looking car, its good value, I read/heard good reports and feedback about Tiger and they are very helpful. The R6 chassis is the lighter of the Tiger variants and should hopefully be able to keep it close to the regulation minimum weight. Not only were Tiger able to provide the chassis starter pack with a few extras but have been very helpful with sourcing materials and special roll cage components. The Tiger is being built in my limited spare time in a single garage, its my first kit car, but over the years I have spent a fair bit of time working on cars - (mainly Minis which I did some sprints and hill climbs in a few years ago) so I'm pretty much used to the work needed.

Flipping the Switch
Linux's new popularity may hurt Apple more than Microsoft.
By Paul Boutin
Posted Monday, June 23, 2003, at 2:04 PM PT
In the latest of his legendary keynote stage shows, Steve Jobs kicked off Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference this morning in San Francisco by showing off the company's speedy new aluminum desktop Mac. But while listing the new machine's impressive specs, Jobs left out a related, eye-popping statistic: Business Week columnist Alex Salkever dropped the bomb last week that next year, "Linux should pass Apple in market share for desktop operating systems on computers." Say what? A few calls to industry analysts confirmed that they've come to the same conclusion as Salkever: Steve's new babies have been born into third place behind both Windows and Linux, which had been dubbed a desktop flop just two years ago.

20. MENSE MAIO
On the Occasion of the First of may. Encyclical promulgated 30 April, 1965.
http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Paul06/p6month.htm
THE MONTH OF MAY
MENSE MAIO ENCYCLICAL LETTER ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIRST OF MAY Promulgated by His Holiness Pope Paul VI On April 30, 1965 Venerable Brothers, As the month of May draws near, a month which the piety of the Faithful has specially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady, We are gladdened at the thought of the moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world will soon be paying to the Queen of Heaven. For this is the month during which Christians, both in Church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the gifts of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance. This pious practice, by which the Blessed Virgin is honored and the Christian people enriched with spiritual gifts, gladdens and consoles us. Mary remains ever the path that leads to Christ. Every encounter with her can only result in an encounter with Christ Himself. For what other reason do we continually turn to Mary than to seek for the Christ she holds in her arms to seek in her, through her and with her the Savior to Whom men, in the perplexities and dangers of life here below, must of necessity have recourse, and to Whom they feel the ever recurring need of turning as to a haven of safety and an all-surpassing source of life? It is precisely because the month of May is a powerful incentive to more fervent and trusting prayer, and because during it our petitions find their way more easily to the compassionate heart of Our Blessed Lady, that it has been a custom dear to Our Predecessors to choose this month, dedicated to Mary, for inviting the Christian people to offer up public prayers, whenever the needs of the Church demanded it, or whenever danger hovered menacingly over the world. This year, We too, Venerable Brothers, feel the need of sending out a similar appeal to the whole Catholic world. When We look at the present needs of the Church or at the state of peace in the world, We have compelling reasons for believing that the present hour is especially grave; that it makes a call for united prayer from the whole Christian people more than ever a matter of urgency.
