Tony Martin, 55, was sentenced to life at Norwich Crown Court for murdering 16-year-old Fred Barras by a majority verdict of 10 to two. Fred Barrras was killed after breaking into Bleak House The jury also found him guilty of wounding with intent Mr Barras' accomplice Brendan Fearon. Martin, described in court as eccentric in the extreme, had earlier been cleared unanimously of attempting to murder Mr Fearon and of possessing a firearm with intent at his farmhouse called Bleak House in Emneth Hungate, near Emneth, Norfolk. As the guilty verdicts were read out a cry of "Yes" was heard from the public gallery.

Conservative MP Roger Gale wanted legal protection for people who believed they had acted in reasonable self defence against intruders. But his Criminal Justice (Justifiable Conduct) Bill failed to make further progress in the House of Commons. Home Office Minister, Fiona Mactaggart, said that it would have created a "spiral of violence and retaliation". The proposal to allow householders the right to take unlimited action in defence of their homes followed a poll of BBC Radio 4 Today programme listeners, which found support for a "Tony Martin" law. The Norfolk farmer's case sparked a national debate after he was jailed for the fatal shooting of a burglar in 1999. Self defence Mr Gale told MPs that his private member's bill addressed the "perception that the criminal justice system has moved towards treating the criminal as the victim".

[This is me with my Tony Martin-CD's] I discovered Black Sabbath at a pretty late stage, in 1989. I knew who they were and what they sounded like, but Sabbath with Ozzy didn't quite hit the right button for me. My best friend at the time, Blackie, persuaded me to go to a Black Sabbath-gig in Copenhagen 1989, and after many "come on!"-s, I went. I hadn't really heard about Tony Martin, and I didn't expect much, so instead of standing in the front-row, like I usually do at concerts, I took a seat up on the upper section. From all over England people come to buy and sell things and to see one another. There are tractor displays, and cows, and horses, and stalls selling clothing and food and drink, and vast car parks for the thousands of people who attend. I was there yesterday at the invitation of the BBC. Bill Heine, a populist libertarian from America, has a show with Radio Oxford, and is in the habit of getting me on air every week or so for five minutes at a time. Yesterday, he wanted me not on the end of a telephone, but in person. Without offering the usual fee that I charge for leaving home, he wanted me to drive for a round trip of 300 miles to spend an hour live on air discussing rural crime and the right to self defence. For that distance and that time, regardless of fees, I would normally have refused. However, this was different. One of the other guests was to be Tony Martin. He is the farmer who shot two thieves in August 1999, killing one and wounding the other. He was put on trial for murder and convicted. Prior to coming to Wellesley he taught at the University of Michigan-Flint, the Cipriani Labour College (Trinidad) and St. Mary's College (Trinidad). He also spent a year as an honorary research fellow at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad..
