That's why he has tried out for the musical at East Pennsboro High School the past four years. Unfortunately he hasn't always gotten the chance to play roles with many singing parts. He played Arab in "West Side Story" and R.F. Simpson in "Singin' in the Rain." Both roles were strictly acting parts. "I got into it because I enjoyed singing and I thought it would give me the chance to sing more," he says. "The past few years I was met with disappointment because I didn't get to sing a lot." That's all changing this year. Seth is playing the part of Tevye, the male lead in East Pennsboro's production of "Fiddler on the Roof". And he sings in practically every song in the show. "I had never seen the show before I knew we were going to do it," he says. "I rented it and as soon as Tevye walked out, I said, Œthat's who I want to be.'" Seth had his eyes on a goal, but he still knew he had to go through the audition before his dream could be realized. "I was a little nervous because I thought I might get a part with no singing again," he says. "When I found out, I was speechless."

That Medeski Martin and Wood also happen to be hugely popular with the groove nation to whom the BerkFest is geared is just one of the more hopeful signs suggesting that the jam scene might evolve into something more than a never-ending, post-Grateful Dead noodle dance. While some of MMW’s more accessible efforts have drawn influences from popular sources like Bob Marley, Funkadelic, David Byrne, Jimi Hendrix and Booker T and the MGs - popular enough so that the group will open a series of live dates for the Dave Matthews Band later this month on the West Coast - MMW’s downtown credentials are impeccable. They include work with the Lounge Lizards, Marc Ribot, John Zorn, Reggie Workman, Bob Moses and the Klezmatics, among others. And the group’s latest recording, “Tonic,” is on Blue Note, the legendary jazz label. It captures the trio in an acoustic setting at the intimate downtown nightclub of the title in a program of extended hard-bop improvisations and renditions of compositions by John Coltrane, Bud Powell and Lee Morgan.

Seth Eastman, qv commander of Companies D and H, First United States Infantry, established Camp Houston as one of the first United States Army posts on the western frontier of Texas. The post was two miles southeast of Fredericksburg on Barons Creek, a tributary of the Pedernales River. This fort, part of the army's effort to protect Texan settlers and travelers from Indian depredations, served the Fredericksburg-San Antonio road and the local region. Eastman remained in Fredericksburg until February 1849, when he was ordered to move to establish a camp on the Leona River (Fort Inge). Camp Houston, or "the Camp near Fredericksburg," began with two companies, originally both infantry, then alternated between a company of infantry and one of dragoons. The German settlers in Fredericksburg had established a lasting treaty with the local Comanches in 1847; the influx of more settlers into the rich valleys of the Pedernales and its tributaries led to skirmishes but not open warfare. The Eighth Military Department renamed the camp in December 1849 for Maj. Martin Scott (Fifth United States Infantry), who was killed at the battle of Molina del Rey in 1847. Fort Martin Scott served as a first line of defense, keeping the peace and minimizing possible friction caused by an active trade between the Comanches and German settlers. The soldiers also represented the one constant source of hard cash for businessmen in this rural community. The influx of new settlers, soldiers, and other whites traversing the range led to the brink of open warfare in 1850, when several tribes of Indians met near the San Saba River.
