Maher could have had Vietnam vet Ron Kovic , about whom the movie "Born on the Fourth of July" was made. Maher could have had Vietnam vet Brian Willson , who lost two legs when a train ran over him while he was protesting U.S. aid to the Nicaraguan contras. But no, who does Bill Maher put on the panel? None other than former South Vietnamese Premier Nguyen Cao Ky I couldn't believe my eyes! Ky seized power in a 1965 military coup, and presided over a puppet regime that was notorious for corruption, and the torture and murder of political opponents. Maybe Maher can have Chilean ex-tyrant Augusto Pinochet on his next panel. Better yet, how about former Ugandan strongman and purported cannibal Idi Amin There's actually a reason to Bill Maher's madness. You see, self-proclaimed (ad nauseam) libertarian Maher says the Vietnam War was a noble cause, that we had to show the Russians somewhere that we were willing to fight, and that Vietnam happened to be the place. Maher probably feels that Ky, a US-installed dictator with virtually no popular support, was an icon of Asian democracy. What a hypocrite Maher is. As a libertarian, Maher feels the U.S. government has no right to tell its own citizens what to do. But apparently the U.S. government has the right to go across the world to tell the Vietnamese what to do, and to kill two million of them when they don't obey us!

PETA has been harassing Columbia president Lee Bollinger for several months and has filed a complaint with the New York County District Attorney's Office seeking to have criminal charges brought against animal researchers at Columbia. Maher's e-mail read, Dear Columbia Employee, I recently heard from my friends at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that baboons and other primates are being subjected to some very strange experiments in laboratories at Columbia University. In one experiment, pregnant baboons are pumped full of nicotine and morphine and their babies are operated on in utero Although we might all know that certain drugs and compounds are addictive, exactly how they tend to result in addiction is, in many cases, still a mystery and animal research has offered a number of surprises. For example, it is known that cocaine stimulates certain receptors in the brain leading to the obvious hypothesis that the brain becomes addicted to having those receptors stimulated. But research on mice performed at Columbia demonstrated that the animals became addicted to cocaine even when genetically modified to be missing the specific receptor that cocaine acts on. The actions of addictive, dangerous drugs are far more complex and more poorly understand than Bill Maher's non-sequiters let on.

Sears and Federal Express pulled their sponsorships of the show. Viewers are angry. Several affiliates have dropped him. His show is teetering on the brink of cancellation, all because he said that the terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center weren't cowards. Rather, he said, "We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly." Now, I'm torn. On the one hand, Maher is not entirely wrong, though his comments were poorly timed and mean-spirited. The Clinton policy of risk-free symbolic strikes against Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden was hardly gutsy. On the other hand, Politically Incorrect deserves to be canceled more than any show not currently on the WB. Maher, his producers and fans have long contended that the show makes a valuable contribution by inviting apathetic Americans into the "national conversation." Of course, it's a mystery to me why any American who can't be bothered to pay attention to politics unless Pamela Anderson is discussing it should be welcome in that conversation.
