NEXT STORY Update your ideas about Norm MacDonald By Michael Epstein Entertainment Staff Guide to Star Ratings I don't know how many of you watch Saturday Night Live these days, but if you do, then you have most likely realized than Norm MacDonald no longer is the anchor of Weekend Update. He has been replaced by the down-to-earth Colin Quinn, and while Quinn is not necessarily the best possible choice, it is in the end a change for the better. First off, the situation surrounding MacDonald's departure has been cloudy at best, but the story basically boils down to this: 72 hours before the first show of 1998, SNL received a memo from NBC West Coast President, Don Ohlmeyer, saying that MacDonald was out. Why did he do this? No one is quite sure. Some rumors point to MacDonald making too many jokes about O.J. Simpson, a close friend of Ohlmeyer. What do I think? Ohlmeyer realized something important: Norm MacDonald is just not funny. For too long Norm MacDonald ruled Weekend Update with humorless jokes, acerbic tone, and punchlines ending in "crackwhore" or "ass". I'm no comedic genius, but when someone has to repeat the punchline to a joke multiple times in order just to get a few weak laughs, that's not funny. Of course, MacDonald is not only bland in Weekend Update, but also in the few skits he's in. His scope of character appears to be limited to a Larry King that just babbles on, and a Burt Reynolds whose vocabulary consists of "hey" and "yeah". MacDonald seems to think that he is exclusive to Weekend Update, and wouldn't do skits if he wasn't made to.

Archived Issue's Thursday, May 28, 1998 Arts Norm MacDonald - Show Some Respect For His Feelings Eric Feigenbaum Senior Reporter Norm MacDonald is no longer the anchor of Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update and he's no longer funny. MacDonald appeared in the King Kat Theater Saturday night with a full house which expected some good humor. He started out strong, faltered, and never quite recovered - a possible predictor for his career. Perhaps MacDonald's lack of a planned shtick hurt him most. He didn't seem to have anything planned - no hilarious stories, no rhetorical questions, no themes. He just talked. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes it wasn't. MacDonald just waited for audience members to yell out something strange enough for him to work from. In fact, MacDonald's funniest part of his stand-up came from an audience member yelling "anal rape." This led the comedian into a discussion of prison and eventually to homosexuality. Parts of it were funny, parts offensive, parts were both. Unfortunately, a successful comedian can't afford to have too many humorless moments. All the big comedians - Steve Martin, Bill Cosby, Rosie O'Donnel, Robin Williams, even Joan Rivers - have a routine worked out before they hit the stage. Eddie Murphy always has a theme and a direction when he does stand-up. Delirious always leaves me feeling exactly like the name implies. Murphy's "Aunt Bunny" story floors me consistently. He uses good material and clever sound effects to entertain his audience. Sure, he plays off the audience, but he has a strong script that works without anyone's assistance.

The scenario is perfect for Sandler's infantile leanings (which he has fortunately outgrown in more recent movies), and for the most part the jokes about being too old and too big for the experiment are obvious. Chris Farley and Steve Buscemi turn up in uncredited cameo appearances, but otherwise the film is pretty dismissible, except for those diehards who can't get enough of Sandler. Tom Keogh Average review score: You gotta like that Anyone who says this movie isn't funny as hell is either too old, too stuffy, or just ashamed to admit how much they loved it! There's no need to explain how funny Adam Sandler is. He was even funny on the Cosby show(remember as Theo's friend in high school?) Funny looking anyway! And then SNL, especially Opera Man, Cajun Man, and "Give me some candy!" But Billy Madison is what really showed me how funny he really is. The humor may be directed mostly for a younger crowd (like 7), but it is a good coming of age story about a kid who happens to be 30!! All in all, if you haven't seen it, watch it.
