It is true to say that during their peak, both actors' careers ran parallel, but that is where most similarities end. Karloff managed to maintain a run of high profile character portrayals, while Lugosi steadily found himself being cast in a stream of low budget programmers of decreasing quality. Many factors were to cause Lugosi's fall from grace, especially after Universal procured his services for Dracula at $500 a week on a seven week shooting schedule, the other studios became wise to the fact that he could be bought cheaply. Later on Lugosi would just be thankful for the work that was offered him while his lack of business acumen made his career even more precarious. The overiding factor, however, was the handicap of his thick Hungarian accent making it difficult for studios to cast him in mainstream roles. Even Boris Karloff remarked after Lugosi's death

Biografia de Bela Lugosi Home Filmografia El verdadero nombre de Bela Lugosi era Bela Ferenc Dezso Blasko. Nació el 20 de octubre de 1882 en Lugos, Hungria. Era el menor de 4 hermanos, y cursó estudios de arte dramatico en Budapest. Su padre, un banquero acomodado, murió cuando el tenia unos 12 años. Viendose en la necesidad de trabajar, lo hizo de minero y en el ferrocaril, hasta que su hermana pudo introducirlo en el teatro, interpretando pequeños papeles en el teatro principal de Szabadka. A fuerza de voluntad y de querer aprender, sus actuaciones fueron mejorando, interpretando cada vez mejores papeles a través de toda Hungria, y cada vez en ciudades mas grandes. Primero adoptó el apellido "Lugossy", para dejarlo luego simplemente en "Lugosi". A menudo cantó en opereta. Con el tiempo llegó a tener un renombre en los teatros de Budapest. Durante la 1ª Guerra Mundial, se alistó voluntario en el ejercito para defender a su pais, llegando a ser teniente, hasta que herido, tuvo que dejarlo en 1916. Al ser de nuevo civil, volvio a interpretar, actuando en una docena de peliculas, la mayoria bajo el nombre de "Arisztid Olt". Tuvo que exiliarse en 1919 debido a su actividad politica durante la republica de Consejos, al principio a Alemania, donde intervino en 11 peliculas, y luego a EEUU, llegando a Nueva York en Diciembre de 1921. En 1923, aún sin saber hablar ingles, encarnó a Fernando, el "Apache español" en la producción de Broadway "The Red Poppy", aprendiéndose el guión de memoria. Siguió luego interviniendo en peliculas mudas y en producciones de Broadway, hasta que a su puerta llamó el personaje que le catapulto a la fama: Dracula, de Bram Stoker.

Lugosi started his acting career on the stage in Europe, most notably known for his portrayal of Dracula in a stage production of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story. He was most famous for his title role in Tod Browning's Dracula (1931) (building on the stage role). The film was a success, but Lugosi was typecast as a horror heavy with such movies as White Zombie and Scared to Death. Later on, the acting jobs dried up and he became addicted to morphine. Late in his life, he again got to star in movies, albeit lousy ones. Ed Wood, a long-time fan of Lugosi's, offered him numerous roles in his films, always playing some variant of a mad scientist/vampire type, even in movies in which such a role made no sense such as Glen or Glenda. The biographical film Ed Wood, by Tim Burton , portrayed Wood's relationship with Lugosi, who was played by Martin Landau One of Lugosi's most infamous roles was in a movie that was released after he was dead. Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space featured footage of Lugosi who died during filming interspersed with a double who looked nothing like him, and Lugosi got top billing for the movie.

On the other hand, horror great, Lon Chaney, Jr. is well known to Western movie fans because he was featured in just about as many Westerns as he was in horror films. The same cannot be said about Karloff and Lugosi. However, before they were established as horror stars, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi appeared in many different kinds of roles and movies. In the silent movie days, Boris Karloff appeared in supporting roles in quite a few B-Westerns. After talkies came in, his lisping British accent proved unsuitable for Westerns even though in later years he appeared quite improbably as a American Indian in the films Unconquered and Tap Roots The Hungarian, Bela Lugosi is a different story.
