Bela Lugosi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Bela Lugosi was the stage name of October 20 August 16 He was born in Lugos, Transylvania Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj Romania ), the youngest of four children of a banker. Lugosi started his acting career on the stage in Europe in several Shakespearean plays. He however, became most notably known for his portrayal of Dracula in a stage production of Bram Stoker 's classic vampire story. During World War I he served as an infantry lieutenant for the Central Powers He left from his native Hungary for Germany in after persecution following his complicity in the forming of an actor's union, and emigrated to the United States in He was most famous for his title role in Tod Browning 's Dracula (1931) (building on the stage role). The film was a success, but Lugosi was typecast as a horror heavy with such movies as White Zombie and Scared to Death . Later on, the acting jobs dried up and he became addicted to morphine Late in his life, he again got to star in movies, albeit lousy ones. Ed Wood , a long-time fan of Lugosi's, offered him numerous roles in his films, always playing some variant of a mad scientist/vampire type, even in movies in which such a role made no sense such as Glen or Glenda . The biographical film Ed Wood , by Tim Burton , portrayed Wood's relationship with Lugosi, who was played by Martin Landau He died of a heart attack, aged 73, in

A Dissertation on the Modern Vampire Introduction Casting a Little Light on the Vampire
That Burning Question
Closing the Coffin Lid ... More...
Introduction When a person hears the word vampire, immediately a plethora of images springs into his mind...Formally attired relics in silk-lined opera cloaks...Beautiful, leatherclad adonis-like fang-boys with superhuman strength and agility...Tragic heroines in diaphanous nightgowns wailing piteously as their life is pounded from them with a stake and mallet. These are the dreams made real by such talented writers as Braham Stoker, Sheridan Le Fanu, Poppy Z. Brite, and let us not forget Anne Rice. With such imagery in literature, the cinema, and role-playing games, is it any wonder that the vampire has re-emerged from the shadows and dominated the popular subculture? Certainly there have been and will always be a small spattering of fans and wanna-be's. But let's face it, never has the vampire had such popularity as anything but the feared and misunderstood supernatural monster that earlier literature and cinema showed us. Despite this newfound popularity and adoration, the vampire is still misunderstood and misrepresented. The truth is as buried now as it was in the days of Bela Lugosi. These legends, texts and films are amusing, seductive and artful, but they are only meant to entertain. Behind the fiction lies a much less seductive truth.

biography
Born Bela Ferenc Dezso Blasko on October 20, 1882, in Lugos, Hungary (now Romania), Bela Lugosi ran away from home at the tender age of 12. He supported himself through a succession of menial jobs. Early on he developed a taste for the theatre, and his ambition and natural talent made him a popular actor in his native country. Lugosi was into his 30s when he volunteered to serve his country during World War I. After his tenure in the service, he returned to acting and appeared in several Hungarian silent films, often billed as "Arisztid Olt." By 1920 he fled Hungary and landed in Germany, where he acted several films. His residence in Germany was brief, and in late 1921 or early 1922 Lugosi had arrived in the U.S. to stay. His poor command of the English language notwithstanding, talent and skill got him cast in the Broadway production of The Red Poppy just a year or so after he came to America.

Reviews
Bela Lugosi
After twenty years of publishing the fan magazine "Midnight Marquee" which replaced the zine "Gore Creatures" , copies of which are now highly sought after, Gary Svehla inaugurates Midnight Marquee Press. To begin this new dawn the Svehla's have published the first of their "Actors Series" with a man who needs little introduction, Bela Ferenc Denzso Blasko or as we know and love him: Bela Lugosi Always a choice subject for close examination, more so now as his life and career have been the subject of much rediscovery. With the benefit of hindsight, Bela is certainly appreciated more now than when he was alive.
While not professing to be a definitive work, Bela Lugosi 's format is made up of several donated pieces by writers expressing their opinions on their favourite Lugosi film. This includes an overview of his American silent films, a re-addressing of the classics and a somewhat wry analysis of his lesser known works. In all 32 of Bela's films are discussed including Dracula The Raven Murders in the Rue Morgue The Devil Bat and Zombies on Broadway . What the Svehla's have avoided is the usual lambasting of these films, for it is Bela himself under the microscope who treated each film as if it was his last and gave it every ounce of effort despite the many inadequacies that were often taking place around him.

The Garage Kits Of Bela Lugosi
by Jon Wang
Docmuscle9@aol.com
s a huge fan of Bela Lugosi, I thought it might be interesting to chronicle all the garage kits he has been the subject of. When one thinks of Lugosi, the image of his intense malevolent Dracula comes to mind - and this is basically where the story begins. Horizon (1988) Billiken (1989) Monstrology Models Resin From The Grave Mad Labs Dimensional Designs Aurora models had the distinction of being the first to render Lugosi in plastic with their 1962 "long box" edition of Dracula. While the kit itself does not capture a great likeness of him, the incredible box art is all Lugosi. For any serious Lugosi fan this is a must have collectible. The second kit to feature a "loose" likeness of Bela was Aurora's Dracula's Dragster. This caricature kit was released in 1965. To a five year old boy this was definitely Bela Lugosi! Aurora did a final take on lugosi in 1971. This was the "MonsterScenes" Dracula released only in Canada. While this is the same kit Aurora released in 1975 in the "Monsters of the Movies" series, it features much better box art than its 1975 counterpart. This kit features the classic descending stairway pose taken from the movie. Lugosi found his way to vinyl with Horizen's "Sci-fi Art" series in 1988. Sculpted by M. Kosada this was a fairly staightfoward take on dracula, which featured a nice likeness, but overall was a bit toy like. A good kit nonetheless. Billiken's 1989 version of dracula was a suberb kit. An elegant sculpture - this still stands as the definitive Lugosi Dracula piece.
