BELA LUGOSI

Bela Lugosi
Bela Lugosi created the image of a vampire for most people through his portrayal of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Bela was born Bela Blasko in Lugos, Hungary, some 50 miles from Transylvania. Lugosi, meaning "one of Lugos, is one of many stage names he used. He adopted the name Arisztid Olt for his appearance in The Lepoard He came to America when he was banned from Hungary for his political views. He played his first American role in 1922 before he learned to speak English. This role took him to his first movie role in 1923's The Silent Command. Lugosi first appeared as the famous vampire in a stage version of Dracula. Horace Liveright purchased the the American rights to the play. His producer John L. Balderston found Bela. The play ran for 40 weeks on Broadway. Lugosi continued with the play in a West Coast production. While working on it, he took on movie parts. When Universal Pictures negotiated the purchase, they used Lugosi as a selling point. Lugosi was somewhat insulted when he was not given the part automatically. Universal wanted Lon Chaney to play the part but he died soon after the negosiations with Florence Stoker, Bram Stoker's widow. Lugosi did earn the part makin $500 a week. Along with movie productions, he took on smaller roles as vampires. He played Dracula again in a vaudville production. He also portrayed a vampire in Mark of the vampire and London After Midnight.

August 16 in Los Angeles, California Lugosi started his acting career on the stage in Europe , most notably known for his portrayal of Dracula in a stage production of Bram Stoker 's classic vampire story. He was most famous for his title role in Tod Browning 's Dracula (1931) (building on the stage role). The film was a success, but Lugosi was typecast as a horror heavy with such movies as White Zombie and Scared to Death . Later on, the acting jobs dried up and he became addicted to morphine Late in his life, he again got to star in movies, albeit lousy ones. Ed Wood , a long-time fan of Lugosi's, offered him numerous roles in his films, always playing some variant of a mad scientist/vampire type, even in movies in which such a role made no sense such as Glen or Glenda . The biographical film Ed Wood , by Tim Burton , portrayed Wood's relationship with Lugosi, who was played by Martin Landau One of Lugosi's most infamous roles was in a movie that was released after he was dead. Hungarian Be'la Ferenc Dezso Blasko was born in October 1882 in the small village of Lugos. By the turn of the new century, young Bela fast established himself as a working stage actor in Budapest. After the devastating first World War, Lugosi arrived in America in the early 1920s. Having already worked in various silent films in Germany, a now experienced Lugosi set about sculpting a new career in cinema stateside. He landed work as Count Dracula in the 1927 Broadway stage adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula , a fortuitous and fateful gig leading a few years later to his star turn in Browning's 1931 celluloid classic. And while director Browning once preferred horror icon Lon Chaney for the role of the infamous bloodsucking count (Chaney died in 1930), clearly Lugosi made the role his own...for all eternity. Bela's thick accent and garish appearance enhance Browning's already moody direction and gothic vibe; Bela's spirited portrayal of Dracula took its place almost immediately as the archetypal depiction of Stoker's most memorable horror creation. A perfect companion to Shelley's lumbering Frankenstein But 1931's Dracula was no less significant for Lugosi himself than for the rest of popular culture. His career rather off and running, Bela followed with a spate of notable horror gems including 1932's

    http://www.who2.com/belalugosi.html
BELA LUGOSI Actor Bela Lugosi shot to stardom in the title role of the 1931 film version of Bram Stoker 's Dracula and set the standard for movie vampires. A successful stage actor in his native Hungary and in Germany, he emigrated to the United States in the 1920s and played various character roles until grabbing the lead in the stage production of Dracula in 1927. Lugosi's talent for playing a villain led to a career of playing monsters and mad scientists, and it's generally accepted that he made a lot of bad choices. Some of his more memorable movies include The Black Cat Ninotchka (1939, starring Greta Garbo The Wolfman (1941) and Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). In 1955 Lugosi committed himself to an institution, admitting an addiction to methadone. In his last years his personal life and career were on the skids, but he still worked a little in television and low-budget films. He died while working on what has been called one of the worst movies ever made, Plan 9 From Outer Space (released in 1959).
