Julie London
Actress Julie London, whose career as an entertainer moved from Hollywood Starlet to chart-topping torch singer to 1970s TV fixture died October 18th, 2000 at Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center following a long illness. Ms. London, best known to a generation of television viewers as nurse "Dixie McCall" on "Emergency!" had recently celebrated her 74th birthday. Born to Jack and Josephine Peck, a vaudeville song and dance team on September 26th, 1926 in Santa Rosa, California, Julie Peck was an only child. With her parents working as radio performers, Julie made her own debut as a singer at the age of 3. When the Pecks moved to San Bernardino and then to Los Angeles for better opportunities Julie was in tow, until she dropped out of Hollywood Professional High School to work part time as a big band vocalist and as a department store elevator operator. One of her elevator passengers, Sue Carol, a talent agent and the wife of actor Alan Ladd, was so impressed with Julie's statuesque good looks she arranged for her to take a screen test. Making her film debut opposite Buster Crabbe in the 1944 adventure " Nabonga " (later retitled "Gorilla") Julie London embarked on her Hollywood film career.

Nightclub singer, 'Emergency!' actress Julie London dies
By JEFF WILSON
.c The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Julie London, the smoky-voiced ``Cry Me A River'' nightclub singer who played TV nurse Dixie McCall on the old ``Emergency!'' series, died Wednesday. She was 74.
London had been in poor health since suffering a stroke five years ago. She was taken by ambulance from her San Fernando Valley home to a nearby hospital, where she died Wednesday morning, her business manager Meyer Sack said.
London was born Julie Peck in Santa Rosa, and moved to Los Angeles at 14 with her vaudeville song-and-dance team parents. She had roles in movies, including ``Jungle Woman'' (1944), ``The Red House'' (1947) with Edward G. Robinson, ``Task Force'' (1949) with Gary Cooper, ``The Fat Man'' (1950) with Rock Hudson and ``A Question of Adultery'' (1958). London was married to ``Dragnet'' star Jack Webb for five years. Her second husband, Bobby Troup, was the composer, jazz musician and actor who penned the classic song ``Route 66.''

biography
Born Julie Peck in Santa Clara, California, in 1926, sultry Julie London enjoyed a long career in films and the recording industry. Her parents had a vaudeville act and when the act moved to radio in the 1930s, London began singing on the show. In 1943, while still a teenager, she was discovered by agent and former actress Sue Carol and landed her first film role in Nabonga (1944). At the same time, London pursued a singing career with the Matty Malnech Orchestra. Several more films followed, but when London married actor/producer/director Jack Webb in 1947, she cooled her career to raise a family. After having two daughters, the couple parted ways in 1954, and London eventually went back to acting and embarked upon a highly successful singing career.

By chance songwriter/actor Bobby Troup heard London sing at a party; later, he convinced her to build a nightclub act and then set about securing a recording contract, signing with Liberty in 1955. An early recording session produced the Billboard smash Cry Me A River , which was followed by a string of hits. London went on to record more than 30 albums on the Liberty label, mostly produced by Troup. Her film career was aided by her popularity as a vocalist, and she starred in a number of memorable films in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After a lengthy courtship, London and Troup married on New Year's Eve 1959. By the early 1960s, London retired again from films, concentrating on her singing career and raising a family with Troup.

31. Songbirds: Julie London
Review of the reissue compilation Wild, Cool, and Swingin'

Winter 2000 The Songbirds Archives Wild, Cool and Swingin’
Capitol Records (203331), U.S., 1999 Reviewed by Ted Naron (Chicago) The packaging of this album is a disgrace. To take one of the most elegantly sexy, eye-appealing songbirds ever, and portray her on the CD cover as a "paint-by-numbers" grotesque, is more than a disservice to Julie London. It’s a slam by Capitol on the value of her music. Capitol is using the paint-by-numbers motif to "brand" a series of reissues they’ve grouped under the banner Wild, Cool and Swingin’ . "Paint-by-numbers" in common parlance is a synonym for "generic, rote, rudimentary, worthless." On a graphic level, paint-by-numbers is a pseudo-hip synonym for schlock, for the whole "thrift store art" look that was so camp, so amusing – oh, about eleven years ago. For some of the artists Capitol is presenting under this umbrella – Mrs. Miller, Wayne Newton – that’s appropriate. With others, like Bobby Darin and Julie London, it’s not, and worse, the insult comes from the company whose catalog these artists enrich. Whatever marketing genius thought this was a swell idea ought to be forced to listen to Newton’s Danke Schoen on endless repeat.

Real Video of a vintage television commercial.

WITH JULIE, YOU GOT A LOT TO LIKE
With a voice often described as smoky, sultry Julie London sang the jingle for Marlboro television commercials during the early 1960's. Julie's haunting yet intimate voice was perfect for "The Marlboro Song," which you can enjoy by clicking on this Real Player file. This circa 1961 one minute television commercial is typical of those that she filmed, and which men of a certain age will remember. Julie London started her career in 1944 as a film actress. She recorded her first record album, Julie is her name , in 1955. This combination of a strikingly beautiful actress with an attractive husky voice resulted in Marlboro commercials that were sexy, intimate, seductive, and unforgettable. As far as I know, Julie was never pictured in a Marlboro magazine ad. A pity, really.
I would like to thank Paul, my friend and fellow cigarette collector, for sharing his wonderful Julie London TV commercial. I would also like to thank my friend Jack Tillmany, who sent me the Julie London photo I have pictured above. Jack is a fellow cigarette pack and ad collector, a former San Francisco theatre owner, and a very knowledgeable motion picture buff. The Julie London publicity photograph is from her 1956 movie, Crime Against Joe.

A Goodnight Kiss Music Tribute to Bobby Troup
(followed by Julie London's obit of 10/19/00 from the New York Times.)
In Tribute: Please send me anything you might want to honor Bobby with, and I will post it below in the order received. M ar. 1, 1999...
Today's writing is about the BOBBY TROUP MEMORIAL held yesterday at the Moonlight Tango Cafe in Encino. It was wonderful, memorable, funny and sad. I learned so much more about Bobby that I have to share some of it here with you. I think when we lose a friend, whether it was a personal friend or a person who's work became our friend (like a favorite song does), it gives us pause, not only because of our sudden realization that our friend won't be there at our whim, but makes us also wonder how our own lives have been lived. There is usually much more to a great writer than just their writing. It takes a certain amount of "lifeforce" and "soul" to generate great work artistically, and normally it doesn't start or stop with the art.
Bobby's Birthday at the SGA in February 1999
(with Phyllis Osmand and Jack Segal) Bobby was not only a world-class writer (Route 66, Girl Talk, Lemon Twist, The Three Bears, etc.) but an amazing man. He was salty, funny, caring, a great father, a talented actor (MASH, Emergency, etc.) and a bad boy in early years. Stories ranged from missed gigs, to first day meetings on the set of Emergency. Most touching were the stories of Bobby and Julie (London, his beautiful wife.) Many said "BobbyandJulie" as if they were one word, and that was the feeling of their life together.
