ALW's BIOGRAPHY:
Andrew Lloyd Webber was born in 1948 in London, England. He was the son of William Lloyd Webber (a composer, musician and musical scholar at the Royal College of Music) and his wife Jean Hermione Lloyd-Webber (maiden name Johnstone), a piano teacher. He and his younger brother Julian grew up in a large flat at Harrington Court, South Kensington, London. Lloyd Webber was first given a violin at the age of three, followed by piano lessons and then lessons on the French horn. As a child, he prefered playing his own compositions rather than some one else's during his music lessons. Educated at the private Wetherby school as a young child, he later entered school at the prestigeous Westminster Underschool, eventually earning a scholarship to attend the Upper School, where he continued to compose music and produce local musicals within the school. After Westminster, Lloyd Webber moved onto Oxford University's Magdalin College, where he stayed only a term. It was during this point that he also met lyricist Tim Rice. He composed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

Andrew Lloyd Webber
In 1964, Andrew Lloyd Webber went to Oxford University to study music. In 1965, though, he met lyricist Tim Rice and dropped out of school to compose musicals. At first Lloyd Webber and Rice wrote a few pop songs and one unsuccessful musical.
Lloyd Webber and Rice had their first taste of success with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, which opened in 1971.
Then Lloyd Webber tried a new writing partner, Alan Ayckbourn. They wrote a musical together called Jeeves. It was not successful, and Lloyd Webber soon teamed up with Rice again for Evita. This musical, written in 1975 and premiered in London in 1978, is based on the true story of Eva Peron of Argentina. Evita was quite successful and was made into a 1996 movie starring Madonna.
In 1981 following Evita, Lloyd Webber wrote Cats, his biggest hit. The lyrics for Cats Cats
Next came Starlight Express. Written in 1984, Starlight Express is a musical about trains that features performers zooming around on rollerblades.
Lloyd Webber wrote The Phantom of the Opera in 1986 with Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. It was another big success.

    20. Cats - A Musical By Andrew Lloyd Webber And T.S. Eliot
Brief history of the musical by andrew lloyd webber, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
    http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm14.htm
Cats Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics: T.S. Eliot Based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats , a collection of poems by T.S. Eliot, Cats which containes no spoken dialoguerevolves around the antics of such feline characters as Old Deuteronomy, Jennyanydots, Mr. Mistoffelees, Rum Tum Tugger, Skimbleshanks, Griddlebone, and Grizabella who sings the hit song "Memory" before she ascends to cats' heaven at play's end. Originally produced at the New London Theatre on May 11, 1981, Cats began its New York run at the Winter Garden Theatre on October 7, 1982. The production featured Betty Buckley (Grizabella), and like the London production which preceded it, the New York version of Cats dazzled audiences with its imaginative spectacle and story-telling flare. The original Broadway cast also included Terrence V. Mann (Rum Tum Tugger), Stephan Hanan (Asparagus), Timothy Scott ( Mr. Mistoffolees), Ken Page (Deuteronomy), Reed Jones (Skimbleshanks), Bonnie Simmons (Griddlebone), Christine Langner (Rumpleteazer), Rene Clemente (Mungojerrie), and Harry Groener (Munkustrap). Although T.S. Eliot died in 1965, he received a posthumous Tony Award 18 years later for his unwitting contributions to the score. On Sunday, September 10, 2000, Broadway's longest running show finally hung up its whiskers, tails and toe shoes after nearly 18 years and a record 7,485 performances.
