Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was a barnstorming pilot before attending the US Army School in Texas 1924 and becoming an officer in the Army Air Service Reserve 1925. His son Charles Jr (1930-1932) was kidnapped and killed; ensuing legislation against kidnapping was called the Lindbergh Act. Although he admired the Nazi air force and championed US neutrality in the late 1930s, he flew 50 combat missions in the Pacific theatre in World War II. He wrote The Spirit of St Louis 1953 (Pulitzer Prize).

The Spirit of Lindbergh
Charles A. Lindbergh, 1902-1974
Charles Augustus Lindbergh is best known for his historic non-stop trans-Atlantic flight from New York to Paris in 1927. What many people don't know is that he chose to make his last flight from a New York hospital to Hana, Maui, to spend his last days with his family in his favorite place.
At Home on Maui
A friend of Lindbergh's had introduced him to the island of Maui. Lindbergh thought it was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. "There is nothing quite comparable when you think of waterfalls, natural swimming pools, and the ocean beyond," he said. This friend later offered to sell him several acres of forest, cliffs and seashore, all quite remote and inaccessible and Lindbergh accepted at once. Charles and his wife Anne Morrow built a simple home a place where they could get back to the fundamentals of living and the closeness to nature and wildness. In the beginning they spent about six to eight weeks a year in their Maui home. As time went on they visited more often and for longer periods of time. According to Leonard Mosely it was both a haven and nest, and they had never felt safer or closer to each other than when they were there together. (Excerpts and paraphrase from Leonard Mosely's "Lindbergh: A Biography", Doubleday 1976.)

Any coward can sit in his home and criticize a pilot for flying into a mountain in a fog. But I would rather, by far, die on a mountainside than in bed.
Life a culmination of the past, an awareness of the present, an indication of the future beyond knowledge, the quality that gives a touch of divinity to matter.
Is he alone who has courage on his right hand and faith on his left hand?
In wilderness I sense the miracle of life, and behind it our scientific accomplishments fade to trivia.
I have seen the science I worshiped, and the aircraft I loved, destroying the civilization I expected them to serve.
Isn't it strange that what we talk least about the things we think about most.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh
While growing up on a farm near the small midwestern town of Twin Falls, Minnesota, Charles Lindbergh was fascinated by speed. As a teenager, the thin, socially awkward young man acquired a motorcycle, which he raced around town, testing the limits of his courageand honing his skills at the controls of a speeding machine. Two years after enrolling at the University of Wisconsin to study mechanical engineering, the 20-year-old Lindbergh dropped out and began a life of aerial adventure. He toured the country with a veteran barnstormer who taught him how to wingwalk and parachute jump. In 1923, Lindbergh borrowed $500 from his father and bought a World War One surplus Curtiss "

ST. LOUIS WALK OF FAME
C HARLES L INDBERGH
One of the finest fliers of his time, Charles Lindbergh was the chief pilot for the first St. Louis to Chicago airmail route, in April 1926. While based at Lambert Field, he conceived of an airplane that could fly from New York to Paris, and persuaded a group of St. Louis businessmen to finance the project. The result was the immortal "Spirit of St. Louis," which he flew across the Atlantic on May 20-21, 1927. The feat made Lindbergh a national hero, and raised public awareness of aviation's potential to an unprecedented level.

Detroit. An air reserve officer, he astounded the world on May 21, 1927, by landing in Paris after a flight from New York in his Spirit of St. Louis. In the U.S. he received unprecedented acclaim. After the kidnapping and murder of their son in 1932, he and his wife moved to England. In 1936, Lindbergh collaborated with Alexis CARREL in inventing a perfusion pump (artificial heart). In 1938-39 he advocated U.S. neutrality in a European war; when his speeches were branded as pro-Nazi, he resigned his commission, but later flew combat missions in the Pacific.
