Lindbergh, Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Charles Augustus, The Spirit of St. Louis. Upon his return to the United States he received an unprecedented welcome, was promoted to colonel, and made a nationwide tour to foster popular interest in aviation. Lindbergh married (1929) Anne Morrow (see below), the daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico Dwight W. Morrow , and with her made several long flights. After the kidnapping and death of their son (see Hauptmann, Bruno Richard ) in 1932, the Lindberghs moved (1935) to England. In 1936, Lindbergh collaborated with Alexis Carrel on the invention of a perfusion pump that could maintain organs outside the body. After inspecting (1938) European air forces, Lindbergh became convinced of German air superiority; he favored a U.S. policy of isolationism with respect to the struggle threatening in Europe. He returned (1939) to the United States and made antiwar speeches for the America First Committee. When these were branded pro-Nazi, he resigned his reserve commission and quit the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Upon U.S. entry into the war Lindbergh offered his services to the air force; he subsequently flew combat missions in the Pacific. In his later years he emerged as a spokesman on conservation issues.

The issues raised then are still hotly debated today because of the timeless nature of the crime and the all-too-human participants. The ingredients include: kidnapping, murder, aviation, fame, money, prejudice, infidelity, politics, capital punishment, judicial ethics, forensic science, pre-trial publicity, spiritualism, eugenics, etc. You get the idea - a Rorschach test for every generation!

at 94), Lindbergh himself, Isidor Fisch, Elisabeth Morrow, Jacob Nosovitsky, Paul Wendel, Gaston Means, the Russian OGPU, the German Luft Hansa, and in a recent development, even the terrier Wahgoosh (whose name meant "fox" in Chippewa).
Most people today are familiar with the kidnapping of 20-month-old Charles A. Lindbergh jr from the 1996 HBO-cable film starring Steven Rea and Isabella Rossellini. This 2-hour movie, directed by Mark Rydell, was very sympathetic to Bruno Richard Hauptmann, employing (count them) 7 child actors to play his own son Manfred, but not one for the Lindbergh child, who was conspicuous by his absence. Neither this film, nor the 1976 NBC-TV Special with Anthony Hopkins, can be considered an historical treatment of the case.

Charles Lindbergh Biography The life of an aviator seemed to me ideal. It involved skill. It brought adventure. It made use of the latest developments of science. Mechanical engineers were fettered to factories and drafting boards while pilots have the freedom of wind with the expanse of sky. There were times in an aeroplane when it seemed I had escaped mortality to look down on earth like a God.
    – Charles A. Lindbergh, 1927 Charles Augustus Lindbergh-Overview Lindbergh, Charles Augustus (1902-1974), an American aviator, made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean on May 20-21, 1927. Other pilots had crossed the Atlantic before him. But Lindbergh was the first person to do it alone nonstop. Lindbergh's feat gained him immediate, international fame. The press named him "Lucky Lindy" and the "Lone Eagle." Americans and Europeans idolized the shy, slim young man and showered him with honors.

    The Theft of the Eaglet
The remains of Charles A. Lindbergh Jr., (POLICE) The child's body was face downward, covered with leaves and insects. It was little more than a skeleton, the outline of a form in a dark, murky heap of rotting vegetation. The left leg was missing from the knee down, as were the left hand and right arm. Most of its organs were gone, scavenged by the animal life dwelling in the wooded area. It had decomposed so completely that it was not possible at first to determine whether it was a boy or a girl. The cause of death was a massive fracture of the skull. The body had been left to the elements for two to three months. Less than twenty-four hours later, and an hour after it had been identified as Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr. by its nurse and father, the remains were cremated. Seventy-three dramatic days of waiting had come to an end. Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. (AP)

    Charles Lindbergh
'The Lone Eagle' Born Detroit, Michigan February 4, 1902 - August 26, 1974 Charles Augustus Lindbergh became interested in flying while a mechanical engineering student at the University of Wisconsin, leaving the school in 1922 to devote his life to aviation. Working his way through flight school, he purchased a war surplus Curtiss Jenny in 1923 and taught himself to fly. After a year of barnstorming, he entered the Army Air Service Flying School and received his pilot wings in 1925. Returning to civilian aviation, more barnstorming and instructing, he became an Air Mail pilot in 1926. His route from St. Louis to Chicago provided him an accelerated accumulation of flying experience at night and in adverse weather. It was on such a flight, on a cold clear night in the cockpit of the DeHavilland mailplane that he conceived the daring plan of a solo trans-Atlantic flight, and the specifications for an aircraft capable of such a mission. Securing the financial backing of a group of St. Louis businessmen in 1927, he selected the Ryan Airlines Company in San Diego to build the

CHARLES LINDBERGH Charles Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 4, 1902. His father was a United States congressman and his mother taught chemistry. His fascination with air planes began when he was a child; they were a new invention then. As a child, Charles was especially interested in mechanics. By age nine, he knew all about gasoline engines. At age eleven, his parents put him in charge of driving and fixing their car. Charles quit college to go to a school in Nebraska that taught people how to fly and repair airplanes. Afterwards, he enrolled in the U.S. Army flight school to become a professional pilot. He learned that becoming a professional pilot meant more than flying an airplane well. It also meant studying and getting good grades. At first his grades weren't so good. Afraid that he might fail, he began studying during every spare moment. He even studied in th bathroom at night when he was supposed to be in bed. His hard work paid off. He graduated with the highest grades in his class. Charles was now a professional pilot. His first job as a professional pilot was flying a route between St.Louis and Chicago delivering mail to the towns along the way.
