What I Hate About Your Programming Language
by chromatic Author's note: based on voluminous comments, I've clarified a few places where my original intent was unclear. Thank you all for the feedback! Of course, at a practical level, there are important differences between languages. Different language families make certain techniques easier than others. You'd rarely be able to write a useful procedural program without any variables, but it's common in functional languages. Expressing a logic problem in terms of objects and classes will require a different approach than that of an imperative language. Setting aside those differences and looking at the popular languages for open source development today, there are many syntactic and otherwise superficial differences. At one level, all languages have a philosophical axe to grind. They exist for a reason. At another level, they're all just flipping bits and jumping around in a long chain of ones and zeroes.

In Defense of Jack Ruby
Was Lee Harvey Oswald's killer part of a conspiracy?
Many take it for granted that if there was an assassination conspiracy, Jack Ruby must have been involved. In fact, many people believe there was a conspiracy precisely because of Ruby's murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, which had the effect intentional or not of silencing the accused assassin. But whether there was a conspiracy or not, there is no reason to assume that Ruby must have been involved. In fact, logic tells us that no conspiracy could profit by silencing Oswald in a public fashion: What's the point of eliminating one suspect while simultaneously handing the police another? Also, were it Oswald's intention to "talk," he'd already had nearly 48 hours in which to do so. Every minute he waited only diminished the chance that others involved could be apprehended. By that time, any conspirators would have to assume he'd already spilled his guts. Another factor to be considered is whether Ruby was the type of person to be entrusted with any responsibility, when a single word from him could have resulted in the arrest of others involved. Dallas reporter Tony Zoppi knew Ruby well and says one "would have to be crazy" to entrust Ruby with anything important, that he "couldn't keep a secret for five minutes. . . . Jack was one of the most talkative guys you would ever meet. He'd be the worst fellow in the world to be part of a conspiracy, because he just plain talked too much." "Jack Ruby would be the last one that I could ever trust to do anything," says Ruby's rabbi, Hillel Silverman.

THE BASENJI
I had always been a "cat person" until my husband began working unusual hours, frequently at night. For the first time in my life, I considered owning a dog to keep me company. My requirements: a breed that is small, clean, quiet, requires little or no grooming, and has a playful disposition. A bell went off in the dim recesses of my memory. Ah, yes, my great-uncle had just such a dog a Basenji! This is a picture of my Uncle Stew and Pooch, taken sometime in the late 1940s or early '50s. He did not live near me, and I would have been too young to remember anyway, but family members still talked about Pooch years later. His most memorable characteristic, apparently, was that he did not bark. And thus began my adventures with the Basenji.
A little history...
The Basenji is one of the most ancient breeds of dog. Originating on the continent of Africa, it has been venerated by humans for thousands of years. Basenjis can be seen on stele in the tombs of Egyptian pharoahs, sitting at the feet of their masters, looking just as they do today, with prick ears and tightly curled tail. The Basenji had all but disappeared from civilization when it was rediscovered in the Congo region of Africa in 1895. There, the Basenji was highly prized by natives for its intelligence, courage, speed, and silence. They were invaluable assistants to the hunt, chasing wild game into nets for their masters. The Azande and Mangbetu tribes from the northeastern Congo region describe Basenjis, in the trade language of Lingala, as "embwa na bwasenji". Translated, this means "dogs from when we were wild" or "dogs from long ago".
