102. Jimmy Webb
The sixties pop songwiter talks with Ronald Sklar of about his new songwriting book.
It's all the entertainment you need! FEATURE STORIES MOVIE REVIEWS MUSIC REVIEWS BOX SET REVIEWS ... AVAILABLE IN BOOK STORES EVERYWHERE! Jimmy Webb All He Knows... by Ronald Sklar I f you are under thirty and have even the slightest retro sensibility, chances are you are familiar with the classic pop songs of Jimmy Webb, and good for you. And if you are over thirty, endlessly toiling in an office and music appreciation is just a faint childhood memory, put down that mouse and try the following: simply relax...breathe...and search your inner-sub-consciousness. Return to your half-forgotten childhood...think back... all the way back your parents' hi-fi system... The Dean Martin Show (in color!)...AM radio stations that feature not news but HOT HITS...and that's where you'll finally rediscover the perfect pop goldmine of Jimmy Webb. It's all coming back to you now, isn't it? The tunes that are spinning endlessly in the windmills of your mind are worth bringing forward. Yes, Jimmy Webb gave you the greatest hits of your early years, including "Wichita Lineman," "Up, Up and Away," "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," "The Worst That Could Happen," "Didn't We," and, of course, the greatest song that makes no sense, "MacArthur Park ("Someone left the cake out in the rain...I don't think that I can take it...cause it took too long to bake it...and I'll never have that recipe again! OH NOOOOO!!!!")". The main reason why you may not immediately know Webb's name is that not Webb but many of your favorite pop stars recorded his tunes. You see, Webb had gotten down on his knees and prayed to God to let him become a songwriter, but he forg

Mrs. Calabash where are you?
Jimmy Durante made this mysterious women's name his signature sign-off during the 1940s. But did she really exist?
By Ted Tyson
Scarborough, Ontario
"GOOD NIGHT, Mrs. Calabashwherever you are!"
For years, Jimmy Durante ended his radio and television shows with that unusual sign-off. Most people thought the mysterious Mrs. Calabash must have been some fictional character that Durante dreamed up just to tease his audiences. But longtime residents of Calabash, North Carolina believe otherwise. The folks in this town will tell you she was a real person with a real nameand a fascinating story to boot. They claim that Mrs. Calabash was really a local woman named Lucille "Lucy" Coleman.
In 1940, Lucy was 28 years old and running a restaurant in Calabash, then a tiny seaside community bordering South Carolina. Durante and his touring entertainment troupe are said to have stopped in for supper one night. It may have been the genuine homespun friendliness of the young restaurant owner that prompted the gregarious Jimmy Durante to beckon Lucy over to his table for some short chitchat. "I'm going to make you famous," vowed Durante, thinking she recognized his well-known face. (In fact, at that moment, she didn't even know who he was!) Lucy's daughter, Clarice Holden, says she will never forget what happened next.
"As Mr. Durante and his group were walking out the door after their meal," Clarice recalls,"he turned to my mom and said, 'Good night Mrs. Calabash.' "

112. Jimmy Neutron -

117. Jimmy Martin
An interview with the King of Bluegrass by Skip Heller.
Jimmy Martin: A Life In Bluegrass Music. Part 1: The Early Years Jimmy Martin was not the first great bluegrass lead singer. But he is the epitome of bluegrass singing, and has no peer. Martin was first heard with Bill Monroe on classics such as "Uncle Pen", "Walking To Jerusalem", and the incredible "On And On", available on Monroe's Country Music Hall Of Fame Series disc (MCA). "I was paintin' machinery in a factory in Morristown, TN, and I was playin' on WCPK from 4:30 to 5 every evening. I got fired on my job for singin' too much, and I cussed out the foreman for firin' me. When I went back after my clothes, I seen him on the street, and told him, 'Listen in on Saturday night, 'cause I'm singin' with Bill Monroe on the Grand Ol' Opry. "I'd been playin' on the radio a couple years, but all my life I'd been listenin' to the Opry, and I had always wanted to see Bill Monroe. "I had sang with my stepfather at churches and funerals and learnt all the parts in the quartet lead, baritone, tenor, and bass. When I went down to try out for Bill, I told him that I knew all the parts, but that I didn't sing tenor as well as he could." "He took me in there and asked Mac Wiseman to let me have the guitar, which was the one that Lester Flatt had played with Bill. It was Bill's Martin D-28 herringbone [guitar]. So I sang one with Bill, then I played a solo 'Poor Ellen Smith', then I played 'Orange Blossom Special' with [fiddler] Chubby Wise. Bill asked Chubby what he thought, and Chubby said, 'Lordy, I thought Lester Flatt had it, but this boy's flat got it."
