Liberace: Secretly a top
Let there be no doubt: this man could play the piano. Born Wladziu "Walter" Valentino Liberace in 1917, he held the world's record for highest paid musician until his death in 1987 from AIDS. This death, shrouded in secrecy and picked apart by a greedy press, capped a career that was gaudy, brilliant, filled with the heart of Las Vegas ... and one where the sexuality of a great musician was the centerpiece of controversy for decades. In 1957, Hollywood Confidential , an extremely popular (10 million+ circulation) tabloid published a cover story on Liberace: "Why his song should be 'Mad about the Boy'", wherein it said that Liberace had made advances on a press agent (male) in LA and Dallas. Liberace sued, and won when it was shown he wasn't in Dallas at the time of the alleged advances. The chutzpah of this seems astonishing in retrospect, but Liberace had a reputation to defend, and that he did. SSN 472-14-4916

The Days of the Understated Suit Liberace's successful lawsuit against the London tabloid, the Daily Mirror, was a critical moment in his career. It also provides a vivid picture of the closeted world of the 1950s. This excerpt is from Chapter Nine: "You Can Be Sure If It's Westinghouse." The Daily Mirror New York Times headlined its one version of the trial with "Liberace Denies He Is Homosexual." He underestimated his counsel. Indeed, the Fox opened well by linking William Conner's diatribe against the American showman to a pattern of smearing Englishmen: his screed had besmirched even the royal family. Conner's slander of Liberace was only the tip of the iceberg that constituted this venal, reckless journalist, Beyfus proclaimed. He called Conner "a literary assassin who dips his pen in vitriol, hired by this sensational newspaper to murder reputations and hand out sensational articles on which its circulation is built." It was the same charge that John Jacobs had used in suing Hollywood Confidential two years before. Through Liberace, the English court had the chance to redress all these transgressions. "Here's a piano player," Beyfus declaimed, "giving these people a chance to fight back."

Pyron, Darden Asbury Liberace An American Boy . xviii, 494 p., 48 halftones. 6_1/2 x 9_1/4 2000 Cloth $27.50 0-226-68667-1 Spring 2000
Paper $18.00 0-226-68669-8 Spring 2001 More people watched his nationally syndicated television show between 1953 and 1955 than followed I Love Lucy . Even a decade after his death, the attendance records he set at Madison Square Garden, the Hollywood Bowl, and Radio City Music Hall still stand. Arguably the most popular entertainer of the twentieth century, this very public figure nonetheless kept more than a few secrets. Darden Asbury Pyron, author of the acclaimed and bestselling Southern Daughter: The Life of Margaret Mitchell , leads us through the life of America's foremost showman with his fresh, provocative, and definitive portrait of Liberace, an American boy. Liberace's career follows the trajectory of the classic American dream. Born in the Midwest to Polish-Italian immigrant parents, he was a child prodigy who, by the age of twenty, had performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Abandoning the concert stage for the lucrative and glittery world of nightclubs, celebrities, and television, Liberace became America's most popular entertainer. While wildly successful and good natured outwardly, Liberace, Pyron reveals, was a complicated man whose political, social, and religious conservativism existed side-by-side with a lifetime of secretive homosexuality. Even so, his swishy persona belied an inner life of ferocious aggression and ambition. Pyron relates this private man to his public persona and places this remarkable life in the rapidly changing cultural landscape of twentieth-century America.

Liberace
Born 16th. May, 1919, in West Allis, Wisconsin, USA; died 4th. February, 1987, Palm Springs, California, USA.
US pianist, singer, and entertainer. His original name was Wladziu Valentino Liberace. His most besotted fans called him Lee. His Italian father had been a French horn player and played for the Milwaukee Symphony. He had also been a bit-part actor in silent movies, but then concentrated on being a grocer. His Polish mother had been a concert pianist before her marriage. His brother George played the violin. Liberace was a piano child prodigy and performed for the Polish pianist Ignace Jan Paderewski at the age of seven. At high school he had a musical combo called The Mixers By the age of 14 he was playing popular classics in cocktail lounges and nightclubs, first under the name Walter Busterkeys. In 1936, at the age of 17, he made his debut as a classical pianist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra playing Franz Liszt's First Piano Concerto. In 1939 he ended a classical performance with a surprise encore of Three Little Fishes which he played with a knowing smirk and winks. The audience loved it; he had found the way to fame.

Tyranny of Evenhandedness
There's been a huge bit of Mea Culpa (if not by the perpetrators, then by the people who have been hounding the perpetrators and have read that into their public announcements) over mis-statements leading up the the Iraq war. At the forefront is New York Times reporter Judith Miller.
The rabble has been after her for close to a year to admit that she was barking up not only the wrong tree, but in the wrong forest.
Paul Krugman has an interesting article here about how this could of come about. His explanation: Tyranny of evenhandedness. On the right are the loud and angry megaphones spewing the pre-packaged agenda, and on the left are the legions of journalists who are committed to giving each side in the argument a voice.

THE liberace SHOW. US Musical Program. As a result, when liberace became a televisionfixture throughout the country by the mid1950s, he also became very rich.

THE LIBERACE SHOW U.S. Musical Program Certainly among the most popular early television celebrities and performances, both Liberace the individual and his television program were also among the most persistently derided. Oddly folksy and campy at the same time, Liberace and his show very much defined a certain strata of showmanship in the post-World War II era. Born Wladziu (Walter) Valentino Liberace in suburban Milwaukee, he was interested in music from age four, and won a scholarship to the Wisconsin College of Music when seven, studying there for seventeen years. Reputedly at the advice of family friend and renowned pianist Paderewski, the youngster decided to someday likewise be known by one name. Receiving classical training, he began to perform pop hits in local clubs as a teen. By the early 1940s he was establishing himself in New York night spots: ads offered a phonetic guide for his fans ("Libber-ah-chee"). Playing cocktail lounges and intermissions for big bands, he received a rave Variety notice in 1945 while appearing at the Persian Room, which lead to strings of dates across the United States. He won a small role in the film South Seas Sinner (1950).

Liberace on Batman : " Like some of the children, I loved the villains because they were sort of anti- heroes roles and you always wanted to see what they could do to put Batman in a predicament and then, of course, it was fun to see how they got out of it. " He was well known on TV at the time, he hosted his own show, "The Liberace Show, for two years. Enjoyed his music immensely. He was a great pianist and entertainer. I was born on the same day as Liberace, only quite a few years later,I am also a musical person with singing, I saw him live in New York as I was walking down the street while working and saw he was performing at radio city, for the heck of it thought I would stop in I talked the girl at the window in to getting me a good seat as the next show was getting ready to start. Dottie , that was the best show I ever saw from a performer. After the nshow I bought his 40th Anniversary tape of songs. Just this week the player tore the tape. Do you know where I could buy his 40th anniversary show tape. Look forward to hearing from you. Tonart@MSN.COM You are not logged in. To access all functionality, you can log in via
