Iron Ring Ceremony Tech Centennial Commencement New Mexico Tech conducted its Centennial Commencement ceremony, awarding diplomas to more than 250 students, on Saturday, May 11, at 11 a.m. Thirteen Ph.D.s, 66 master's degrees, and 168 bachelor's degrees, and 11 associate's degrees were awarded. Dr. Daniel H. Lopez , president of the university, presented the degrees on behalf of the Board of Regents. The School of Mines held its first commencement in 1896. (See related article Tech's highest award to an undergraduate, the Brown Award, went to Sandra Powell , who graduated with highest honors in materials engineering. The Brown Award is for the student judged by the faculty to rank highest in scholarship, conduct, and leadership. Powell also received Tech's Cramer Award, for a female engineering student ranking highest in scholarship. Powell, a native of Chillicothe, Ill., is a graduate of Illinois Valley Central High School and Illinois State University. The Cramer Award for a male engineering student ranking highest in scholarship went to Darin Mishima , who received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Mishima, from Honolulu, plans to attend graduate school at Stanford University next year.

The results of one of our recent pilot studies support our hypothesis that tamoxifen may promote the growth of estrogen receptor-negative CBC, while it inhibits estrogen receptor-positive contralateral tumors. We hope to further investigate this finding in a future study. Also, I am currently working on a cohort study of CBC in women diagnosed with a first breast cancer under 45 years of age. Since various tumor markers were assessed on the first tumors of these women, I am evaluating the relationship between the expression of these markers, in particular c-erbB-2, and risk of CBC. Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering NSF CAREER Award Faculty web page Complex hierarchical self-assembly templated by block copolymers: Hierarchical self-assembly is an essential part of nanotechnology because it is one of the few practical strategies for making ensembles of nanostructures. Professor Li’s research focuses at complex hierarchical self-assembled structures via combining two-dimensional (2-D) liquid crystalline (LC) ordering and block copolymer microphase separation process. The resulting hierarchical structures possess complex natures at both 1-5 nm and 10-100 nm length scales (see Fig. 3) . Well-correlated structures at different length scales might also provide a solution for the transfer of the novel properties at the nanoscale into a higher length scale. Example REU Project : The student will be asked to study the effects of blending polystyrene (PS) homopolymers with PS and LC block copolymers (PS-PLC) (already developed in Dr. Li’s lab) on the original PS-PLC nanostructure. Using solution-casting methods, the student will first prepare a series of polymer thick films having different PS/PS-PLC ratios. It is anticipated that blending PS in PS-PLC will alter the PS volume fraction of the sample, which in turn, lead to different nanostructures. Under the guidance of a graduate student, the REU participant will then learn to characterize this series of samples using small angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. By analyzing the d-spacing and phase structure change of the sample, nanostructure dependence on PS/PS-PLC ratio could be established. Completing this project could grant the student better knowledge in polymer self-assembly as well as familiarize him/her with the powerful modern characterization tools.

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Pharmacology Home About the Department Research Interests Department Directory USUHS Department of Pharmacology Yang Li, M.D. Ph.D. Zn2+ (Zinc) Signaling In Neurobiology Goals of my research are to understand cell to cell interaction/communication in CNS and how the brain modifies its function/structure through experience. Specifically, I focus on the role of Zn2+ as a transmembrane signal in neuronal activity and intracellular signaling. The divalent cation Zn2+ is found at high concentration in presynaptic vesicles at many glutamatergic terminals throughout the mammalian cerebral cortex. This endogenous Zn2+ is released with glutamate into synaptic cleft with neuronal activity, reaching high concentration to 10-100 M (Li et al 2001) and may approach several hundred micromolar in extreme conditions. Zn2+ is essential for normal cellular function such as gene expression and enzymatic reaction and also likely serves an additional signaling role in the CNS. My studies of Zn2+ signaling in CNS are carried out in collaboration with Dr. Sarvey, Dr. Hough, Dr. Thompson and Dr. Frederickson. The contribution of these studies to understand the action of Zn2+ in CNS includes:
