SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS STEPHEN LEWIS AS SPECIAL ENVOY FOR HIV/AIDS IN AFRICA The Secretary-General has appointed Stephen Lewis as his Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. Mr. Lewis, who served as Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) from 1995-1999, and former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations, will be responsible for ensuring follow-up to the African summit on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases held in Abuja, Nigeria, last April, and to next month's United Nations General Assembly special session on HIV/AIDS, as related to Africa. In June 1998, in addition to his United Nations duties, Mr. Lewis was appointed by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to an "International Panel of Eminent Personalities to Investigate the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda and the Surrounding Events". From 1984 through 1988, he was Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations. In the 1960s and 1970s, Stephen Lewis was an elected representative to the Ontario Legislature, and served as leader of the New Democratic Party. Mr. Lewis was born in Ottawa on 11 November 1937. He is married to Michele Landsberg, and they have three children Ilana, Avi and Jenny.

FRAZIER: I have to ask first, before we talk about the situation in Africa let's talk about the situation in the U.N., where a lot of member nations aren't really getting on board this train. But as someone who has watched these multilateral negotiations over 15, 20 years, they have a dynamic of their own; there's always these linguistic labyrinths where a country struggles with the meanings of words. Parents: Jordan Lewis (about 1764 - 1838) unknown first wife Siblings: Wiley Lewis Marriage: Celety Futch (about 1800 - 1854) on December 30, 1815 in Statesboro Georgia by R.T. Stanaland, J.P. Children: Angus Lewis Isaac Lewis (1829 - about 1863) Stephen Lewis Jr Letha Elizabeth Lewis John Jackson Lewis Louisa Lewis (1846 - unknown) Life and Times: Stephen was born in Georgia 14 years after the American Revolution. About the time of his birth there was widespread land speculation and fraud in Georgia. At one point, Georgia even ceded some of its land (which included the Mississippi territory) to the Federal Government in order to straighten out the mess. When Stephen was 15, the U.S. went to war with Great Britain (the War of 1812). The war directly affected Georgia in that Georgians used it as an excuse to try to take Florida from Spain. They were defeated and the troops soon had their hands full fighting the Northern Creek Indians who had sided with the British. The Creek Indians were defeated, in one instance by Andrew Jackson. The rest of the Indian tribes, even the ones that supported Georgia in the War of 1812 soon came under attack and were driven from Georgia by 1840. Stephen had left Georgia before this point however.
