141. Welcome To The U Of O Lewis Center For Neuroimaging
Supports research in cognitive neuroscience and biological imaging.
http://lcni.uoregon.edu/
The mission of the Center is to support interdisciplinary, multifaceted research in cognitive neuroscience and biological imaging. The Center has a Siemens Allegra 3T MRI unit and full capabilities for the design and fabrication of MR coils to support a broad range of research needs and applications. In the news: Lauterbur and Mansfield win 2003 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discoveries leading to MRI. In the earlier 1970's, Paul Lauterbur devised a practical way to make images using nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic field gradients. Peter Mansfield was the first to use magnetic resonance to image human anatomy, and invented echo-planar imaging, a fast imaging technique that makes functional MRI possible. Their work forms the basis for modern magnetic resonance imaging, and their recognition is overdue.

Lewis, Meriwether
(b. Aug. 18, 1774, near Charlottesville, Va.d. Oct. 11, 1809, near Nashville, Tenn., U.S.), U.S. explorer who with William Clark led the first overland expedition to the Pacific Northwest (1804-06). As a boy, Lewis developed a love of the wilderness and became an expert hunter. After serving in the militia during the Whiskey Rebellion (1794) in western Pennsylvania, he transferred into the regular army. In 1801 Lewis became private secretary to Pres. Thomas Jefferson, who for the next two years unofficially prepared Lewis for leadership of a transcontinental exploring expedition. At Lewis' request, another Virginian, Lieut. William Clark, was appointed to share the command with him. Upon the U.S. purchase of the Louisiana Territory (1803), Congress appropriated $2500 for its exploration. To round out his background before leaving, Lewis went to Philadelphia to study botany, zoology, and celestial navigation. The three-year expedition, from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean and back, succeeded not only because of the party's skills but also because its two leaders worked together in such close harmony. Following Jefferson's instructions, Lewis and his colleagues kept a detailed journal of the trip, thus contributing a priceless narrative of North American exploration. These diaries helped dispel ignorance about the region and did much to open the way for westward expansion.

149. The Literary Gothic   |   Matthew Lewis
Short essay on the novelist, poet, and playwright. Annotated links.
http://www.litgothic.com/Authors/lewis.html
Lewis, Matthew
9 July 1775 - 10 May 1818
Like Mary Shelley , Lewis made a huge impact with his teenage (and only) novel The Monk , which more-or-less defined the far edge of sensational Gothicism when it was published in 1796. Lewis went on to write a number of plays, poems, and translations, many of which featured Gothic themes and motifs. As a playwright Lewis was rather successful, his melodramatic flair finding an appreciate audience in the days of Romantic drama, although Lewis abandoned the theater when he inherited his family's West Indian sugar plantations.
Sites: The Monk : A Hypertext Companion [ problematic link ] Solid overview of Lewis and his place in the Gothic tradition, of the complex textual history of this novel (Lewis himself bowdlerized the text in response to public outcry), and other issue. [Zachary Munzenrider, ENEC 981: The Novel of Sensibility. UVa] biographical note Emphasizes The Monk (naturally) and notes Lewis' influence on a number of other writers. [Keith Parkins] very brief biographical note from the Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed.

Portfolio includes works of oil, acrylic, pencil, painted reliefs, and collages using paper, fabric, and found objects.
    http://www.colorandpassion.com/
Introduction Biography Statement Exhibitions Special Links ... Art Project
Barr's work is bold, colorful and intriguing. Her mission is simple. She loves what she does and hopes her passion is contagious. (Most images will enlarge by clicking on them.) As a mixed media artist Barr is unconfined to any particular technique or medium. Each time she employs a new medium she plays with it; exploring and probing its qualities and limitations. Once familiar with the new medium she then takes it to a new height by combining it with other media. The possibilities are never ending, that is her excitement. Always though, there is color and strength. For her custom rubber stamp art work Barr carves images and designs into a pliable rubber mat using linoleum carvers and, after applying acrylic paints, transfers the images to the support. Often she carries the design out from the central image and onto one or more of the mats framing it. Among Barr's collages you will find the use of imported and handmade papers, common tissues, found netting, and various types of fabrics and strings. Paint, rubber stamp art and her reliefs are also often combined with these works.
