"Grandpa" Al Lewis Runs for Governor of New York
by Mitchel Cohen, Brooklyn Greens
"We don't inherit the world from our ancestors, we borrow it from our kids." With those words in late August, Grandpa Al Lewis accepted the Green Party nomination for Governor of New York. After five weeks of intense activity the Green Party is on the ballot in the state of New York! Two hundred and forty Greens submitted petitions, amounting to some 33,010 signatures, to the Board of Elections in Albany-6,000 more than we were able to accumulate for Ralph Nader two years ago. And we got them in a week early.
When the marshals and sheriffs would leave, we'd break the lock and move the furniture back inside. Our candidates all come from the rank-and-file of ecological and social justice movements-no honchos need apply. Johann Moore for Attorney General; Howie Hawkins for Comptroller; Dr. Alice Green for Lt. Governor; Joel Kovel for US Senate; and ... drumroll please ... Al Lewis-that's right, "Grandpa Munster" himself-for Governor. I first met Grandpa in 1970 in New Haven, at the Free Bobby Seale and Erica Huggins protests. Bobby and Erica, leaders of the Black Panther Party, were on trial for their lives and 20,000 demonstrators waged a tow-day rally and, at night, pitched battle against the police and unsheathed bayonets of the National Guard. I was 21 and one of three SUNY Stony Brook reps on the coordinating committee organizing what would become, following the murder of four students at Kent State a few days later, the largest student strike in US history. We were writing up our three national demands when I saw Al in the doorway at Yale. He wasn't a speaker there, just one of the crowd. Al just winked as he walked past.

Nora Callahan and Al Lewis denounce drug war on WBAI radio
A transcript
November Coalition regional leader John Chase of Florida recorded the following live radio conversation between Nora Callahan and 91-year-old Al Lewis (known by many as Grampa Munster in the 1960s television series). The show was live from a Manhattan theater on Saturday, April 27th. After some fiery opening remarks on current affairs, Lewis turned attention to the drug war and November Coalition's mission. Capitalized words show emphasis by the speaker. Al Lewis: Nora what can we DO? Nora: Well, the drug war's pretty old now. In the middle '80s the federal government did away with a judge's discretion, which gave all power to prosecutors, and which laid a lot of groundwork for what we see today. It's being asked of Americans to watch your neighbor. WATCH YOUR NEIGHBOR!! Al Lewis: Heh,heh, heh. Nora: The drug war has eroded all of our civil rights steadily for over thirty years- consistently. We now have in many communities, communities particularly hard hit by drug war prosecutions, a system and culture of betrayal. Sometimes in cities when I'm speaking, a young person will yell out from the audience, "Tell on three, go free!" What happens? What November Coalition wants our members and other fellow Americans who are standing with us to oppose this so-called war on drugs - it's really just a war on people - to do is to expose the fact that one of the most important things to our society - one of the most important "weaves" is TRUST, and reliance on each other. And in community after community, particularly the poorest, and we know who those are-the black and brown people - - they're tearing it apart because the only way to save your HIDE if you're caught, or a friend is caught, is to rat on a FRIEND, tell on a FRIEND, roll over on . . your . . MOTHER.

A resource for Carroll fans, containing etexts of his poetry, essays, puzzles, and lesser known works . . . . An excellent and comprehensive site on Carroll's writing, including a substantial archive of his work.
http://home.earthlink.net/~lfdean/carroll/index.html
I became interested in Lewis Carroll while I was writing a research paper on his use of language in the Alice Books. As I read more and more of Carroll's work, I became more and more addicted, these e-texts are the result. I have concentrated primarily on works which are not available elsewhere on the internet. The Nursery Alice, particularly was a labor of love, so if you enjoy looking through it, or any of the other texts, please take a few seconds to sign my guestbook Unfortunately my career as a student has pretty much taken over my life and I haven't had any time to update this page lately. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get anything new up, but I'm going to try to maintain everything that is here so that you can enjoy it. Also, while I love to recieve e-mails about this site and read them all, I cannot help with homework or papers over e-mail (I have enough of my own!) or provide any additional information. Enjoy the site! The Nursery Alice With color illustrations

Explorers of the Millennium
Our web site, "Explorers of the Millennium," will provide students with a wealth of information about the most important explorers of the past thousand years in a simple, easy-to-use format. We included reports on nineteen explorers, chosen by members of our team. We organized the explorers on separate "Hall of Fame" and "Timeline" web pages, so that users can look for a particular explorer by name or by century. We have a links page to help students find other helpful Web sites that relate to the explorers selected. A quiz section gives visitors a chance to see what they know about some of our explorers. A feedback page invites visitors to submit their own nominations for our Explorers' Hall of Fame. We hope that a visit to "Explorers of the Millennium" will answer students' questions about explorers, lead them to new sources of information, and encourage them to think critically about which explorers were the "greatest" and why. Home Bio Gigs Photos ... Contact me The Open Mic Contest Finals - "The Best of the Best" at Front Page News in L5P were a real hit. Thanks to everyone that came out and participated - and thanks to some of the local celebrities for coming out as well. The new round of competition starts up on May 12th and will happen every Wednesday. I'm serious when I say that this isn't some hole-in-the-wall karaoke meets amateurs kind of junk. These people are really, really good. Even non-musicians will enjoy it! Ha! I'm serious - come on out and see! Anyone else catch Evan Dando's (from the Lemonheads) surprise appearance at Limerick Junction last week? Pretty wild, but honestly the people that perform at the open mic are better than he was (and I'm a fan). This was the first time I've missed Music Midtown. There were several bands I would have seen had I been there, but nothing really drew me in this year. So, I booked a couple of shows that weekend. I would have thought that it would have slowed things down, but check out the pictures from Sat. night @ FPN here and you'll see why I was surprised. I've posted all of my May gigs

Some personal information, resume, and his picture.
http://www.lewis.org/
Welcome to Lewis.org
I left FDT in February of 1999 due to continuing disagreements with management and a general lack of faith in the survival of the company. I needed to work somewhere more stable. Somewhere where the staff wouldn't race to the bank every other Friday to see who's paychecks would clear. On and off, for a few years, Atlantic.Net had been offering me a job, so in February of 1999, I accepted their offer. Over the years, I've done (and still do) some consulting for a number of other ISP's (mostly ones up north or out west) and for some non-ISP companies that have Internet connectivity.
Here's an old picture of me and my wife Gail. It was taken with a connectix QuickCam connected to my old 486 running Linux. HTML versions of my resume and Gail's resume are stored online here.
I finally got tired of the old web page that used to be here. It was largely unmaintained for nearly 5 years, and was definitely showing its age. For historical purposes, it's been renamed rather than rm'd.
There have been accesses to this page since June 16, 1999

Add to a Notebook Lewis Carroll Renowned Victorian author Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. The son of a clergyman, Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children. From a very early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and marionette shows, and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. In 1846 he entered Rugby School, and in 1854 he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. He was successful in his study of mathematics and writing, and remained at the college after graduation to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879), and Curiosa Mathematica (1888). While teaching, Carroll was ordained as a deacon; however, he never preached. He also began to pursue photography, often choosing children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean at Christ's Church, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned both photography and public speaking between 1880 and 1881, and focused on his writing. Many of Lewis Carroll's philosophies were based on games. His interest in logic came purely from the playful nature of its principle rather than its uses as a tool. He primarily wrote comic fantasies and humorous verse that was often very childlike. Carroll published his novel
