C.S. Lewis

The Art of Patrick Lewis
"My paintings are based on my love for yoga, my experiences with my daughters, and my own philosophies of life. The figures in my pieces reflect my desire to create works that are evocative of the spiritual pleasures and dangers of everyday life. I paint these figures as totemic figures, which have been integral to art in all cultures since primitive times. In assembling these images, I highlight natural beauty and abstract form, while expressing my optimism and humor, characteristics I have learned through my children's resilience and strength. Following my instincts and trusting the line to lead me to the depth of the work, the result has been a direct narrative, not solely of my own emotional state, but one that speaks through the universal language of forms." Patrick graduated with a BA in Liberal Arts, from St. John's College in Santa Fe, N.M. Patrick's dedicated study of Art and Art history has continued since college, working tirelessly as a professional artist, and as a private tutor teaching art to young adults. General Information: Original artwork by Patrick Lewis is now held in private collections throughout the United States, with selected presentations in Texas, New Mexico, South Dakota, Hawaii and Washington. Painting continuously for the past ten years, Patrick has participated in selected exhibitions, personal commissions, and private shows for corporations. Patrick currently lives and paints in Dallas, TX.

Given by Michigan to the National Statuary Hall Collection Marble by Daniel Chester French
Given in 1889; located in National Statuary Hall. Born October 9, 1782, Lewis Cass was the eldest child of Jonathan Cass, a craftsman who had fought in the Revolution. The family lived in Exeter, New Hampshire, and young Lewis attended Exeter Academy, where he became close friends with Daniel Webster. He taught school in 1799 in Wilmington, Delaware, and moved to Ohio later that year. By 1808 Cass had opened a law practice in Marietta, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio Legislature in 1806 and served as the United States marshal in Ohio from 1807 to 1812. He enthusiastically fought in the War of 1812 and was appointed a colonel in the Third Ohio Regiment. He became a brigadier general in the United States Army a year later. He was appointed governor of the Territory of Michigan in 1813 and served until 1831. His tenure was marked by good relations with the numerous Indian tribes under his jurisdiction. Cass served as the secretary of war from 1831 to 1836 and as minister to France in 1836. Elected to the United States Senate in 1845, he served until 1857.
