"western all'italiana" , meglio conosciuto come "spaghetti-western" , genere sicuramente tra i più imitati. Celebrato per la sua qualità dagli stessi americani (che dell'argomento ne sanno parecchio!) è doveroso sottolineare che lo spaghetti-western, insieme al neorealismo, alla commedia e all'horror all'italiana, fu un filone di rilevanza internazionale! A few Italian westerns were being made, but those did not look significantly different from the Hollywood western. This changed after A Fistful of Dollars was released, and soon countless hordes of the new "spaghetti-western" genre were being created by many directors, and scored usually either by Ennio Morricone or Bruno Nicolai. For the release of A Fistful of Dollars, Leone was afraid that American audiences would not go to see a western made in Italy. After all, the western was up until then an American controlled genre. So both Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone changed their names, becoming Bob Robertson and Dan Savio. However, the movie was quite successful, and became the first of a rapidly growing genre of spaghetti westerns. After this movie, westerns would never be the same. None of his last three films were huge money-earners, and his final work, Once Upon a Time in America (1984), was butchered by his American backers when released in the United States. Despite the fact that his stylistic flourishes have now become shorthand for 'the West' in countless television commercials and Hollywood movies, his enormous influence on the Western has never been fully recognised in America. To this day, European Westerns are rarely even mentioned in English-language considerations of the genre. Leone came from a family with roots deep in the Italian film industry. He had been second lead in Rawhide , a popular TV series for a few years, but didn't seem able to transfer that success to the movies. So when he was asked to make a low budget western in Spain, to be directed by an Italian whose only previous experience was with the "sand-and-sandals" genre, he didn't think he had much to lose. That movie was A Fistful of Dollars , and by the time its second sequel, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly , (tonight's LSC Classic Movie) was filmed, Clint Eastwood was an internationally known superstar. Eastwood plays The Man With No Name, a drifter of few words whose philosophy is "you either get rich or you get dead." His character was based on an amoral samurai bodyguard created by Toshiro Mifune in Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo . In tonight's movie, he is searching for a buried treasure with two other men, played by Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef. Each man naturally wants the treasure all to himself, and they are constantly pairing off to oppose the third. Their attempts to outsmart each other become increasingly brutal until their final standoff in a huge graveyard.
