Back to biography list Sergio Leone, a renowned film director of "spaghetti westerns", was born in Rome on January 23, 1921. Leone was the son of a film industry pioneer, Vincent Leone, and Italian actress, Francisco Berating. His father, Vincent Leone began his acting career in 1904 and in 1908 started directing. Sergio leone entered into Italian films at age eighteen, and for many years worked as an assistant to various Italian directors as well ass American directors filming in Italy (usually making Biblical and Roman epics), (sergio.html, p.1). He appeared as an assistant on the film Ben-Hur and appeared in a bit as a priest in The Bicycle Thief. Leone was quoted as saying, "when I was twenty-five I received a proposal to direct some minor Italian films, but refused because I wanted to delay my directing debut. I was afraid of ruining my career and involving the producer in an economic disaster. In those days we had more sense of responsibility" (DeGornari, p.13). Since most of the money for these type of films came from Italian companies, the term "spaghetti western" was used as a term by critics who felt the films were nothing more than sideshow (Nudge, p.4). Leone made his official debut as a director with an epic, The colossus of Rhodes in 1960. Leone made The Colossus of Rhodes to finance his honeymoon trip to Spain. This film gave Leone instant success and as a result, was said to have been turning down six directing offers a day (DeFornari, p.15).

Home C'era una volta Sergio Leone I bagagli pratici di Leone erano notevoli: numerose collaborazioni come sceneggiatore e aiuto regista (Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei, Elena di troia, Sodoma e Gomorra e persino Ben Hur, in cui aiutò la seconda unità nella famosa scena delle bighe) e soprattutto un bagaglio di film visti, in particolare di John Ford, Sturges ed Hawks. Enzo Barboni e Stelvio Massi, incontrando una sera Leone dopo una serata al cinema, gli consigliarono di ispirarsi ad uno splendido film di Kurosawa in quel momento, visto: "La sfida dei Samurai" (titolo giapponese "Yojimbo"). Una tipica fonte di grande letteratura. ( iniziata da Goldoni nell’"Arlecchino servo di due padroni") in cui un samurai senza padrone si vende a due capitalisti del luogo, sfruttando la loro inimicizia e traendone vantaggi. Il film venne distribuito in poche sale e, in breve tempo, con il consueto gioco del passaparola, incassò un "infinità di dollari". L’atmosfera del film era piuttosto orientalizzata, ed il remake era stato svolto con molta attenzione. Negli angoli di un villaggio sperduto, Leone aveva focalizzato un luogo freddo, con un vento gelido e un immagine di morte. Sin dalla prima scena, in cui Eastwood osserva il bambino che viene cacciato dai banditi mentre si avvicina alla madre, si osservano le tonalità bianche e glaciali che caratterizzano molti paesaggi Leoniani. La cultura giapponese ha giocato spesso con la metafora del doppio e della maschera. E Leone, che ama la mitologia, sa benissimo che i suoi eroi devono essere scaltri, mentitori e traditori.

Born in Rome , he was the son of the cinema pioneer Vincenzo Leone and the actress Francesca Bertini. With this background he started working in film in his teens. edit Biography He began writing screenplays in the 1950s and made his solo directoral debut in 1960. He did not invent the Spaghetti Western genre, but he created some of its most memorable films, overblown CinemaScope excesses that pushed the relative unknown Clint Eastwood into stardom. Using the leverage of his successes he directed what he hoped would be his masterwork, C'Era una Volta il West Once Upon a Time in the West ), in 1967 for Paramount. Cruelly edited down, the film flopped. He directed a quick, money-making project starring James Coburn and turned down the opportunity to direct The Godfather , building up instead to another epic work, this time centred on American gangsters.
