Tom Lehrer:
The Political Musician That Wasn't
By Jeremy Mazner
Final paper for "Music and Social Movements"
jmaznerNOSP@M@wesleyan.edu
Tom Lehrer could have been one of the musical giants of the '60s. He did most of his song writing in the 1950's and 60's, a time period Scheurer dubs the "new folk revival" , and like other musicians of the day, Lehrer often had a message he wanted to bring to his audiences. In the mold of a political folk musician, his music was shunned by mass media; and a song of his was even once reprinted in Sing Out! magazine, a publication that a few years later would be one of the first to spread the songs of Bob Dylan . But quite unlike contemporaries such as Dylan and Phil Ochs, who rose to fame on the wings of the New Left, Lehrer's song writing career was stifled by the changes of that era.
The Man
Lehrer grew up around music. He was born in 1928, and began taking classical piano lessons 8 years later. His personal preference, however, was for the popular music of the day. His parents graciously allowed him to change to a piano teacher who was willing to indulge his desire for show tunes. In future years, Lehrer's songs would draw heavily from this early exposure. "Having a popular music teacher worked out very well for me. I began writing tunes when I was seven or eight. But I was in college when I began writing parodies of popular songs," recalled Lehrer in an article in American Scholar . His later satirical songs evolved from these simple parodies. After graduating from Harvard with a B.A. in mathematics at the early age of 18 ("Everyone in college was young then because ... everyone who was not young was in the army."

He was certainly one of the funniest, and one of the most widely emulated. Frolicking his way toward notoriety in the early 1950s, Lehrer defied the willful amnesia of the Eisenhower era, composing witty ditties about drug dealing, bomb testing, sadomasochism, and other topics America had persuaded itself it knew nothing about. Meanwhile, he aimed a sardonic jab or two at romantic love, sentimentality, and the vapidity of the budding folk scene. While the TV networks created their Leave It to Beaver universe, Lehrer reveled in critical thought and scathing, relentless irreverence. He also pioneered the DIY philosophy by self-releasing two 10-inch albums and selling them through mail-order, while holding down a day job as a lowly math professor at a place called Harvard. This lavish new three-CD set collects those records and everything else Lehrer released, including several live albums, singles, and rarities from the '70s children's show

A Conversation with Tom Lehrer
instigated and transcribed by Paul D. Lehrman The following is a transcript of a conversation between myself and the great satiricial songwriter Tom Lehrer, on September 7, 1997, at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This conversation was also the basis for my Insider Audio column in the December, 1997, issue of Mix magazine. Lehrer's first two self-produced albums, along with various bonus tracks, are on a new CD from Rhino Records, and it was because of this record's release that Lehrer, who normally keeps a very low profile, agreed to a series of interviews with various publications, of which mine was one of the last. For the edited version of this interview, plus the rest of Paul Lehrman's Insider Audio archives, please visit insideraudio.com Thanks to Rhino Records, Mix magazine, and of course, Tom Lehrer.
Paul Lehrman, editor@s2n.org There are some other transcripts of conversations with you on the 'Net, but they look a little weird. I did a profile of you for the Boston Globe Magazine about 13 years ago, when the show "Tomfoolery" was opening in Boston. The article came out well, but you didn't like the picture that accompanied it.

Some of you who have small children may have perhaps been put in the
embarrassing position of being unable to do your child's arithmetic homework
because of the current revolution in mathematics teaching known as the New Math. So as a public service here tonight I thought I would offer a brief lesson in the New Math. Tonight we're going to cover subtraction. This is the first room I've worked for a while that didn't have a blackboard so we will have to make due with more primitive visual aids, as they say in the "ed biz." Consider the following subtraction problem, which I will put up here: 342 - Now remember how we used to do that. three from two is nine; carry the one, and if you're under 35 or went to a private school you say seven from three is six

One week of every year is designated National Brotherhood Week. This is just one of many such weeks honoring various worthy causes. One of my favorites is National Make-fun-of-the-handicapped Week which Frank Fontaine and Jerry Lewis are in charge of as you know. During National Brotherhood Week various special events are arranged to drive home the message of brotherhood. This year, for example, on the first day of the week Malcolm X was killed which gives you an idea of how effective the whole thing is. I'm sure we all agree that we ought to love one another and I know there are people in the world that do not love their fellow human beings and I hate people like that. Here's a song about National Brotherhood Week.
Oh, the white folks hate the black folks

    When there's something to share
    Being neat
    When you're folding a sheet
    That's mathematics
    When a ball

When you cook From a recipe book When you know How much money you owe That's mathematics How much gold can you hold in an elephant's ear When it's noon on the moon then what time is it here If you could count for a year would you get to infinity Or somewhere in that vicinity When you choose How much postage to use When you know What's the chance it will snow When you bet And you end up in debt Oh try as you may You just can't get away From mathematics Andrew Wiles gently smiles Does his thing and voila QED we agree And we all shout hurrah As he confirms what Fermat Jotted down in that margin Which could've used some enlargin' Tap your feet Keepin' time to a beat Of a song While you're singing along Harmonize With the rest of the guys Yes try as you may You just can't get away From mathematics That's Mathematics! is the twenty fifth (25th) song on disc one of the Remains Of Tom Lehrer album. TOM LEHRER REVISITED
    Introduction
I should like to introduce now the featured artist of this evening's...ordeal. I'm sure that you will all agree without any hesitation that Tom Lehrer is the most brilliant creative genius that America has produced in almost 200 years, so perhaps a few words of biographical background might not be amiss. Endowed by nature with perhaps the most glorious baritone voice to be heard on an American stage since the memorable concert debut in 1835 of Millard Fillmore; endowed also with twelve incredibly agile fingers; Mr. Lehrer has had a long and varied career in the field of entertainment starting with nine years at Harvard University...where it was that he first decided to devote his life to what has since become a rather successful scientific project - namely, the attempt to prolong adolescence beyond all previous limits. Even before he came to Harvard, however, he was well known in academic circles for his masterly translation into Latin of
