Lyrics to and recordings of The Elements by Tom Lehrer. In 1959, jack of all trades, Tom Lehrer wrote and sang this song naming all of the elements in front of a Harvard audience. You've got to imagine the guys recording this song: early twenties, with seven-eights inch crewcut hair, plastic rimed glasses, sharp white shirts and loosened black ties. They gathered around a high tech tape recorder and forever preserved this song: An original tape recording of The Elements as a 3700K Quicktime sound file Here's a 314K Quicktime sound file with lower quality that may not be compatable with your computer. In 2002, Flash animator Mike Stanfill put the song in motion ``It's simply the names of the chemical elements set to a possibly recognizable tune. ``There's antimony arsenic aluminum selenium
And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium
And nickel neodymium neptunium germanium
And iron americium ruthenium uranium ... vanadium
And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium
And gold protactinium and indium and gallium (inhale)
And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium ``There's yttrium ytterbium actinium rubidium
And boron gadolinium niobium iridium
And strontium and silicon and silver and samarium And bismuth bromine lithium beryllium and barium ``Isn't that interesting?

Tom Lehrer is the most brilliant song satirist ever recorded. You probably knew that already, but perhaps you didn't know this: His first album, Songs By Tom Lehrer , was one of the most profitable investments in the history of the music business. Recorded for an initial studio cost of $15 (15 dollars for the entire album) and initially released for sale only on and around the Harvard University campus, Songs By Tom Lehrer went on to sell 370,000 copies on Lehrer's own do-it-yourself label, one of America's biggest-selling if not the biggest-selling humorous-music album of the 1950s on any label, large or small. This compilation contains the original 1953 version of Songs By Tom Lehrer and his only other studio album, More Of Tom Lehrer , both in their entirety. Also on this CD are all of Lehrer's hard-to-find 1960 recordings with full orchestra, including one track never before released in any form and a brand-new Lehrer performance of one of his most famous (or infamous) songs, "I Got It From Agnes," which he's never before recorded commercially. Lehrer's career as an entertainer was as brief as it was brilliant. He didn't become a professional performer until 1952, just before he made his first album. He dropped out of show biz in 1960, and two years of that eight-year span were spent in the Army. Aside from a very short comeback in the mid-'60s (when he recorded his highest-charting album

TOM LEHRER Mathematician / Satirist Tom Lehrer began recording parodies and satirical songs during his years as a student at Harvard. In the 1950s and 1960s he developed parallel careers as a professor of mathematics and as the writer and performer of cheerfully satirical songs about politics and society. His albums included An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer and That Was the Year That Was. In 1980 his music was revived in the stage show Tomfoolery
Extra credit : Lehrer got his B.A. from Harvard at the age of 18.

AN EVENING (WASTED) WITH TOM LEHRER
5. Oedipus Rex
It seems that most of the songs that you hear these days on the radio played by the disk jockeys, apart from rock and roll and other children's records, tend to be motion picture title songs. Apparently producers feel that we will not attend their movies unless we have the titles well drilled into our heads in advance. Of course, we don't go anyway, but at least this way they make back on the song some of what they've lost on the picture. But, with the rise of the motion picture title song we have such hits of the past few years as The Ten Commandments Mambo Brothers Karamazov Cha-Cha Incredible Shrinking Man I Love You... I'm sure you're all familiar with these. But, a few years ago, a motion picture version appeared of Sophocles' immortal tragedy Oedipus Rex . This picture played only in the so-called art theaters, and it was not a financial success. And I maintain that the reason it was not a financial success... (laughter) you're way ahead of me... was that it did not have a title tune which the people could hum, and which would make them actually eager to attend this particular flick. So, I've attempted to supply this, and here then is the prospective title song from Oedipus Rex From the Bible to the popular song, There's one theme that we find right along; Of all ideals they hail as good, The most sublime is motherhood. There was a man though, who it seems, Once carried this ideal to extremes. He loved his mother and she loved him, And yet his story is rather grim. There once lived a man named Oedipus Rex, You may have heard about his odd complex. His name appears in

The Political Musician That Wasn't

Tom Lehrer could have been one of the musical giants of the '60s. He did most of his song writing in the 1950's and 60's, a time period Scheurer dubs the "new folk revival" , and like other musicians of the day, Lehrer often had a message he wanted to bring to his audiences. In the mold of a political folk musician, his music was shunned by mass media; and a song of his was even once reprinted in Sing Out! magazine, a publication that a few years later would be one of the first to spread the songs of Bob Dylan . But quite unlike contemporaries such as Dylan and Phil Ochs, who rose to fame on the wings of the New Left, Lehrer's song writing career was stifled by the changes of that era.
The Man
Lehrer grew up around music. He was born in 1928, and began taking classical piano lessons 8 years later. His personal preference, however, was for the popular music of the day. His parents graciously allowed him to change to a piano teacher who was willing to indulge his desire for show tunes. In future years, Lehrer's songs would draw heavily from this early exposure. "Having a popular music teacher worked out very well for me. I began writing tunes when I was seven or eight. But I was in college when I began writing parodies of popular songs," recalled Lehrer in an article in American Scholar . His later satirical songs evolved from these simple parodies. After graduating from Harvard with a B.A. in mathematics at the early age of 18 ("Everyone in college was young then because ... everyone who was not young was in the army."

    Introduction
I'd like to introduce now the featured artist of this evening's... ordeal. I'm sure that you'll all agree without any hesitation that Tom Lehrer is the most brilliant creative genius that America has produced in almost 200 years, so perhaps a few words of biographical background might not be amiss. Endowed by nature with perhaps the most glorious baritone voice to be heard on an American stage since the memorable concert debut in 1835 of Millard Fillmore; endowed also with twelve incredibly agile fingers; Mr. Lehrer has had a long and varied career in the field of entertainment starting with nine years at Harvard University... where it was that he first decided to devote his life to what has since become a rather successful scientific project namely, the attempt to prolong adolescence beyond all previous limits.
Even before he came to Harvard, however, he was well known in academic circles for his masterly translation into Latin of The Wizard of Oz , which remains even today the standard Latin version of that work. A few years ago he was inducted... forcibly... into the United States Army and spent most of his indenture in Washington as sort of Army liaison to the Office of Naval Contemplation. About his service record he is justifiably modest, but it is known that in a short time he rose to the rank of brigadier general. However, before he could acquire a tenure, he was discharged, and owing to nepotism and intrigue, he emerged with only the rank of specialist 3rd class, which was roughly equivalent to the rank of corporal without portfolio.

Tom Lehrer the man, his myth and his music?
    by Odell Sneeden Hathaway, III
In this report I will introduce the reader to Tom Lehrer, mathematician and songwriter. First the man. Where did he come from, who was he, what did he do and were is he now. Next we will look at Tom Lehrer the myth, we will look at the effect Dr. Lehrer had on the genre of satire and though satire on the world and at some of the stories that have sprung up concerning Dr. Lehrer. Finally, we will look at Dr. Lehrer's music. Thomas Andrew Lehrer: Born in New York City in 1928, as a child took piano lessons, at the age of 15 entered Harvard University where he majored in mathematics. At the same time, he began writing and performing sarcastic little ditties and parodies. This made him a popular fixture at Harvard parties. Especially freshman smokers. He received his BA in 1947 (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa). In 1953 he left Harvard, and took up performing in night clubs and on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was also in 1953 that he took advantage of a new technology, the long playing record, to launch himself on an unsuspecting world (this he did at his own expense). During the 50's he worked at the Los Alamos scientific laboratory in New Mexico. Despite the fact that many of his songs had been quite critical of the work being done there, he was still able to get security clearance (Joseph Mc Carthy missed this one). In 1955 he joined the army, His reason for joining goes as follows "I figured I'd better do it while there was a hiatus between wars." While in the army he worked for the National Security Agency where he developed vodka Jell-O (my source for this is the Boston Globe January 1, 1984, I am not making it up). This was done as a way to circumvent a restriction on alcoholic beverages on base (Jell-O is not a beverage).

    Stop clapping, this is serious
March 1 2003 Illustration: Simon Bosch Tom Lehrer is still feisty and funny, but the king of sophisticated satire tells Tony Davis there's no place for his style of humour now: the world just wouldn't get it. 'I'm not tempted to write a song about George W.Bush. I couldn't figure out what sort of song I would write. That's the problem: I don't want to satirise George Bush and his puppeteers, I want to vaporise them." The speaker is Tom Lehrer, arguably the most famous living satirical songwriter. And, in a roundabout way, the New York-born singer, composer and mathematician is explaining why he has been all but silent since 1965. It's 50 years since Lehrer's first recordings, and 38 years since his last album of new material, yet word that we've secured an interview has people around the office launching into such unlikely yet infectious ditties as The Vatican Rag Smut and Lehrer's ode to spring pursuits
