Here is a collection of song lyrics for all known Tom Lehrer songs, (accompanied when possible, with MIDI sound files). Three Tom Lehrer albums, all recorded before a live audience, are available from Reprise records. All three are great albums, save in one respect. None of them include song lyrics as part of their liner notes, and here we attempt to remedy, at least in part, that deplorable situation. This site presents lyrics and patter transcriptions for all 40 tracks included on these albums, and in addition, includes lyrics for several other stray Lehrer songs known to be at large. There are at least three other known Tom Lehrer albums. The 1953 album, Songs by Tom Lehrer , contains studio recordings of all the songs from Tom Lehrer Revisited . The 1959 album More Songs by Tom Lehrer contains studio recordings of all the songs from An Evening (Wasted) With Tom Lehrer . Both of these albums are out of print, however, they are collectively available on the 1996 album , currently available from Rhino Records . This album contains all of the tracks from the other two, along with 1960 orchestral recordings of four of the songs, and a 1996 recording of

Introduction
I'd like to introduce now the featured artist of this page. I'm sure that you'll all agree without any hesitation that Tom Lehrer is the most brilliant creative genius that America has produced in almost 200 years, so perhaps a few words of biographical background might not be amiss. Endowed by nature with perhaps the most glorious baritone voice to be heard on an American stage since the memorable concert debut in 1835 of Millard Fillmore; endowed also with twelve incredibly agile fingers; Mr. Lehrer has had a long and varied career in the field of entertainment starting with nine years at Harvard University... where it was that he first decided to devote his life to what has since become a rather successful scientific project namely, the attempt to prolong adolescence beyond all previous limits.
Even before he came to Harvard, however, he was well known in academic circles for his masterly translation into Latin of The Wizard of Oz , which remains even today the standard Latin version of that work. A few years ago he was inducted... forcibly... into the United States Army and spent most of his indenture in Washington as sort of Army liaison to the Office of Naval Contemplation. About his service record he is justifiably modest, but it is known that in a short time he rose to the rank of brigadier general. However, before he could acquire a tenure, he was discharged, and owing to nepotism and intrigue, he emerged with only the rank of specialist 3rd class, which was roughly equivalent to the rank of corporal without portfolio.

Tom Lehrer in 1960. Tom Lehrer (born April 9 ) is an American songwriter, satirist , pianist, mathematician , and singer. As a graduate student at Harvard University he began to write comic songs to entertain his friends, and those songs later became The Physical Revue . Influenced mainly by the musical theater, his style consisted of parodying the then-current forms of popular song. For example, his appreciation of list songs (à la Danny Kaye 's "Tchaikovsky") caused him to popularize the periodic table of the chemical elements sung to the tune of Gilbert and Sullivan 's " Major General's Song Inspired by the success of his performances of his songs, he paid for some studio time to record an album, Songs by Tom Lehrer , which he sold by mail order. Self-published and unpromoted, the album, which included the macabre ("I Hold Your Hand In Mine"), the lewd ("Be Prepared"), the unusual (" The Elements "), and the mathematical (" Lobachevsky "), became a success via word of mouth. With a cult hit, he embarked on a series of concert tours and released a second album, which came in two versions: More Songs by Tom Lehrer was studio-recorded, and

TOM'S JOURNAL
May 22, 2003
Jim Lehrer talks with New York Times Columnist Tom Friedman about his recent trip to Iraq.
JIM LEHRER: Now our last words on Iraq tonight; they're from "New York Times" columnist Tom Friedman, who has just returned from Iraq. Once again, welcome home and welcome here, tom. TOM FRIEDMAN: Good to be here with you, Jim. JIM LEHRER: Do you agree with what the colonel told Elizabeth Farnsworth now that the clock is ticking on U.S. help for these folks? TOM FRIEDMAN: Very much so. I could quote back to you, Jim, something one his commanders said to me, which is we've got a couple months here and if we don't start delivering better services for the Iraqi people, it's going to be a long hot summer in Iraq. JIM LEHRER: Tell us now we'll get back to that in a moment. Tell us where you went. You were there for a week. Where did you go? TOM FRIEDMAN: I was actually there for five days. I first flew, actually, from Kuwait to Baghdad, with an American army officer, and then Baghdad to Tikrit; Tikrit to Baghdad one of Saddam's palaces, back to Baghdad, then back to Kuwait. Then I got a car and a driver, since I don't exactly know the roads and drove from Kuwait to Basra, Basra to Najaf, the Shia holy place, Najaf to Baghdad and then Baghdad all the way back to Kuwait, so I got to see it from the air and the ground, which was enormously revealing.

    http://www.greenmanreview.com/remainsoftomlehrer.html
Tom Lehrer, The Remains of Tom Lehrer (Warner Archives 2000) According to the brilliant little book that accompanies this box, Songs by Tom Lehrer (1953) took about an hour to record. Lehrer came into the studio, sat down by the piano and did 12 songs almost in one go. True the record is only 22 minutes long, but still it was something no-one would copy today. More of Tom Lehrer (1959) gives you eleven more songs in the same vein. It starts off with a spring song, "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park." "A Christmas Carol" is of course not something you would sing yourself at Christmas. In the middle, Lehrer quotes a few real traditionals like "Hark the Herald Tribune sings/Advertising wondrous things" and "God rest you merry merchants/May you make the Yuletide pay." Next he runs through the complete chemical periodic table in a little more than a minute. And then there's a ditty about "Oedipus Rex"; various rather unorthodox versions of "Clementine"; and his submission for creating an anthem for the US army, "It Makes A Fellow Proud To Be A Soldier," filled with maniacs who became soldiers. The record ends with "The Masochism Tango" ("I ache for the touch of your lips dear/But much more for the touch of your whips, dear") and one of the best anti-nuclear songs ever written, "We Will All Go Together When We Go." More of Tom Lehrer The success of the live version made him re-record his first album in 1960, this time titled
