SPIKE LEE Director / Actor / Writer Name at birth: Shelton Jackson Lee Spike Lee made a name for himself in 1986 with the hit independent film She's Gotta Have It , a frank comedy about the many lovers of an independent Brooklyn woman. The film established Lee's as a rising young black filmmaker, a rarity at the time, and his skills and independence, along with his outspoken African-American perspective and feisty public persona, kept him in the public eye throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In later films he continued to tell stories with racial themes and New York settings, including the Brooklyn drama Do the Right Thing (1989), the jazz-tinged Mo' Better Blues (1990, with Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes ), the interracial romance Jungle Fever (1993, with Snipes and Anabella Sciorra), the biopic Malcolm X (1992, starring Washington and based in part on the book by Malcolm X and Alex Haley Summer of Sam (1999, with John Leguizamo) and controversial racial satire Bamboozled (2000). Lee often appears in his own films, and his She's Gotta Have It character Mars Blackmon, a sports-loving New York nebbish, was resurrected in well-known Nike commercials of the 1990s.

I go...to Hollywood for my financing. It doesn't really mess with my creativity, because I have the final cut and the control over the film that I would have had if I'd raised the money all by myself. Even if I had, I'd still have to go to Hollywood for distribution, anywaythere's just no way I'm going to reach the people I want to reach carrying a film can under my arm and going from theater to theater across the country...why waste two or three years scraping for money?...studios want to make as much money off you as possible, basically just pimp you. Yet it is possible to keep your agenda and make films, too." Premiere magazine, August 1989

Spike Lee: Looking Back
X was a disappointment, and Crooklyn a disaster. What has happened to Spike Lee?
Alan A. Stone
Frantz Fanon, the visionary Black psychiatrist, described how "The Wretched of the Earth" under the yoke of colonialism had repudiated their African identity and, with feelings of shame and inferiority, covered their "Black faces with White masks." But even in Fanon's lifetime, a dialectical counter-movement had already begun as Whites discovered the beauty, mystery, and power of African art and African-American music. Elvis Presley and the Beatles were not the first performers who got their start by putting Black masks in front of their White faces and imitating the style and mannerisms of African-Americans.
Today the inspiration for mass popular culture in all its forms comes, in surprising measure, directly from the inner-city ghettos of the United States. African-American music, dance, dress, coiffure, argot, style, and the "Brother's" handshake, are to be found on every continent. No longer wearing the "white masks" of their colonizers, African-Americans have embarked on their own cultural colonization of the world.
Spike Lee, the most important African-American film-maker of his generation, is preoccupied with both sides of this dialectic: the shame of internalized oppression and the satisfaction of unselfconscious cultural exuberance. But discarding the "white mask" of acculturation is not a simple matter, as the struggle for Black pride and African-American identity makes clear. Most of Lee's films reflect his obsession with this problem of personal and collective identity.

http://www.cinefile.biz/25ora.htm
Alberto Cassani, 4 Marzo 2003

Spike Lee
Filmmaker "Fight the Power," the theme song to his 1989 film Do the Right Thing, could easily be Spike Lee's personal motto. From his earliest days as a student filmmaker to his $33 million epic Malcolm X and beyond, Lee has shown a willingness to tackle prickly issues of relevance to the black community — and has savored every ounce of controversy his films invariably produce. "Spike loves to fight," the filmmaker's friend and business associate Nelson George told Vanity Fair. "There's a gleeful look he gets, a certain kind of excitement in his eyes when [things are] being stirred up." "I guess you could call me an instigator," Lee admitted in an interview with Vogue. Once the bane of Hollywood executives, Lee has proven through his creativity and resolve that films by and about African Americans can be both profitable and universally appealing. And almost singlehandedly, he has generated an industry-wide awareness of a neglected market niche, the black moviegoing public. Following the unforeseen box-office success of Lee's earliest films, Hollywood's gates have opened to a new generation of young African American filmmakers. "Spike put this trend in vogue," Warner Bros. executive vice-president Mark Canton told

Cinema Gotham Home Finest Hour The Spike Lee Interview By Gil Jawetz Spike Lee (photo by Seth Kushner) Spike Lee has been making some of the most New York-centric films around since emerging from Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. Starting with his well-known NYU short Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads , Lee has almost always taken the volatile mix of social, political and personal turmoil that New York fosters in its citizens as a cinematic jump-off point. Among his best films are Jungle Fever Clockers and his feature debut

    Got Spike?
You may be sued. ilmmaker Shelton Jackson "Spike" Lee is suing Viacom over its plans to rename the TNN cable network "Spike TV." Viacom's channel would appeal to American males aged 18 to 34. The media giant envisions a testosterone-laced antidote to the Oxygen, Lifetime, and WE channels geared to women. The accomplished motion-picture director and his attorney — none other than Johnnie "O. J." Cochran — detect something far more nefarious: a plot by TNN and Viacom to capitalize on Lee's name. "It's clear when you say 'Spike,' everybody knows who you are talking about," Cochran told Manhattan supreme-court judge Walter Tolub on June 9. "They hope to get a boost in the ratings. They don't have a right to misappropriate his name to do that." As Lee himself argued in his legal briefs: "The media description of this change of name, as well as comments made to me and my wife, confirmed what was obvious — that Spike TV referred to Spike Lee."

"Punk Rock Hall of Fame Awards 1999"

By Stephanie Zacharek June 21, 1999 P arents of the victims of convicted serial killer David Berkowitz, also known as the Son of Sam, have expressed dismay over the release of Spike Lee's "Summer of Sam," which opens in early July. In a Sunday New York Times article, victims' relatives accused Lee of insensitivity, claiming that the movie, based on the events of the case as they unfolded in the summer of 1977, will reopen painful wounds. Berkowitz, apparently, isn't too happy about it either. "This madness, the ugliness of the past is resurfacing again all because some people want to make some money," he told the Times. Berkowitz, now 46, is incarcerated at Sullivan Correctional Facility in the Catskill Mountains, serving six consecutive life sentences totaling more than 300 years for a series of murders and shootings he claimed to have committed at the behest of a neighbor's Labrador retriever. Berkowitz claims that he committed only three of the six murders to which he confessed, and even then, he asserts, he was possessed by Satan at the time. Satanic cult members, he says, were responsible for the other killings. Whatever. Berkowitz is now a born-again Christian and also works as a peer counselor in Sullivan's mental-health unit. "If he had not been a serial killer," the Times article stated, "Mr. Berkowitz said he probably would have ended up 'married with a wife and kids in the suburbs, making a living, working in the post office.'" Sometimes it's better
