Schanke, series editor www.mercedesdeacosta.com [A]n entertaining biography. . . . New York Times Book Review Drawing on countless hours spent with de Acosta’s personal correspondence and unpublished writings, Schanke puts together a compelling portrait of a woman whose confidence in herself is striking, particularly because she stood tall in an era when women were taught to do the opposite. . . . Although de Acosta’s writing is largely neglected, Schanke’s well-crafted, deeply-researched biography makes her live again, gliding down the streets of New York to show other women how it should be done. ForeWord “[Schanke] has written a delightful biography of de Acosta, which places her in the Dona Juana hall of fame. . . . Schanke's biography . . . is a delicious read, filled with juicy quotes and excellent research on peripheral players. Like Natalie Barney, de Acosta was an original and artful seductress.”

HOME MONTHLY: JULY 2003 Living and working in the home of a legend by Janis Gibson Tucked away on a rocky Weston hillside is a home with a colorful history. For more than 60 years it was the sanctuary for a woman whose name today is unfamiliar to many, but is a legend in the theater community. When she died more than a decade ago, at the age of 92, The New York Times called Eva Le Gallienne the "Grand Lady of the American Stage." She was a woman who lived her life according to her artistic vision. A pioneer of American repertory theater, Eva began acting at 15, and over her long career distinguished herself as a director, producer, translator, teacher, writer and founder of the Civic Repertory Theatre on 14th Street, which presented Ibsen, Chekhov, Shakespeare and new playwrights from 1926 to 1933. The theater was the model for off-Broadway and inspiration for many regional theaters, and gave a professional start to many well-known actors. Miss LeG, as she preferred to be called, either acted in and/or directed nearly 150 live theater productions, 16 film and television performances, dozens of radio broadcasts and a score of records and tapes. She authored four books, published translations of Ibsen and Hans Christian Andersen, provided prefaces and introductions to several volumes and wrote numerous articles for periodicals, play bills and newspapers. She received a special Tony Award in 1964 for her "distinguished contribution to the theater," a Grammy and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her 1980 role as Gramma Pearl in Resurrection.

HOME WOA INDEX Eva Le Gallienne - born 01-11-1899 special collection of notes from the unedited files of Irene Stuber NOT PROOFED
B. 01-11-1899, Eva Le Gallienne, her obituary read: "a national treasure," "a reminder of what greatness in the theatre can be" At age 27 this daunting and determined maverick dared to challenge the male-dominated Broadway system of long runs, high prices, and typecasting and established America's first and only classical repertory theatres (1926-35). In later years she founded the American Repertory Theatre (1946).
That maverickness (and her lesbianism) has served to so erase her from history that a history of theatre history at Tufts University where she was awarded an honorary degress asked "Who is she?" As with Liliom the critics were unanimous in their praise of Le Gallienne in The Swan, the audience rose ins tnding ovations at the ends of acts 2 and 3.
LeG acted in and/or directed nearly 150 live theatre productions, sixteen film and TV performances, dozens of radio broadcasts, and a score of records and tapes. She authored four books, published translations of Ibsen and Hans Christian Andersen, provides prefaces and introductions to several volumes, and wrote numerous articles for periodicals, playbills, and newspapers.
LeG's many awards included honorary degrees from a dozen universities, a Tony, an Emmy, an Oscar nomination, a National Artist Award from ANTA, a Citation for Distinguished Service from the American Theatre Association, and the National Medal of the Arts from the United States government. In recognition for her Ibsen translations, the King of Norway presented her with the Cross of the Royal Order of St. Olav, the highest award given to a foreigner. She was not awarded the Kennedy Center Honor because she could not personally attend as was the requirement.

Drama Women in Turmoil Six Plays by Mercedes de Acosta Edited and with an Introduction by Robert A. Schanke June cloth pages, 6 x 9, 3 illus. Theatre Studies Women's Studies Theater in the Americas Robert A. Schanke, series editor “Robert A. Schanke has rustled up a treasure trove of wonderfully hotheaded plays by Mercedes de Acosta. I hope that the discovery of these neglected and forgotten dramas will lead to rambunctious new productions and a celebration of this fantastic woman who haunted our theatrical landscape during the first half of the last century.” Ann Bogart, artistic director of the SITI Company and author of A Director Prepares: Seven Essays on Art and Theatre “It is a pleasure to become better acquainted with Mercedes de Acosta. . . . Six of de Acosta’s plays, now edited and made available by Robert A. Schanke, rescue her from a vague, shadowy existence, and allow her to assume a strong identity of her own. These plays, quite varied in their subjects and contexts, reveal a writer with strong dramatic sensitivity and emotional power.” Oscar Brockett
