New York Time's critic Walter Kerr called her the epitome of stardom. In 1977 President Gerald Ford hailed her "excellence of achievement," and in 1986 President Ronald Reagan awarded her the National Medal of the Arts. She was selected by nationally known director Lee Strasberg as a "vivid example of what American actors are capable of."
Her range of acting was incredible. She went from the classic Trojan Women to the contemporary Exit the King, from the sentimental Liliom to the bare simplicity of Ghosts, from the romanticism of Camille to the realism of Hedda Gabler, from the fantasy of Peter Pan to the operatic bravado of Mary Stuart. No other actress in her time, certainly not Katharine Cornell or Helen Hayes, could possibly boast such a colorful palette.
Soon after she arrived in the United States from her native England in 1915, she became a Broadway star. From 1920 to 1925 her name was in lights, and there were larger-than-life photos of her on billboards as she toured around the country. She was the darling of the media, providing interviews about her beauty secrets, advertising products, and modeling the latest fashions.
But when she was 27 and at the height of her fame, this daunting and determined maverick turned her back on stardom and dared to challenge the male-dominated Broadway system of long runs, high prices, and type-casting. She established our country's first classical repertory theatre (1926-1935). Supported by wealthy patrons and capacity audiences, she initiated a school for apprentices that included Bobby Lewis, Burgess Meredith, Howard da Silva, John Garfield, and J. Edward Bromberg. Her Civic Repertory Theatre enjoyed tributes from leading critics of the day. Alexander Woollcott: The Civic "has recaptured the lost charm, the lost pleasure in the theater." Robert Benchley: "One ought to go there about once a month just to recapture the feeling of theatergoing."

** Description **
"Schanke's biobibliography of her contains a brief biographical sketch and a chronology of significant dates, material of interest to anyone looking for basic biographical information. Also included is a list of productions in which Le Gallienne acted or which she produced or directed. The work also contains an annotated list of her writings, a secondary bibliography, and a guide to archival materials, which would be particularly helpful to scholars interested in doing further research. The secondary bibliography is quite extensive, including a number of unpublished dissertations. This rather specialized work would be of interest to upper-division undergraduate and graduate libraries with collections in acting and theater history." Choice
This is the first published resource on the life and seventy-year theatrical career of award-winning actress Eva Le Gallienne. It traces Le Gallienne's acting debut in 1914, her travels to the United States, and the successes and failures of her New York City repertory theatres. Also noted are Le Gallienne's critically acclaimed performances in such plays as Liliom, The Swan, The Master Builder, Hedda Gabler, The Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard, The Seagull, Camille, Romeo and Juliet, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Stuart, and The Royal Family. The book covers not only her Broadway engagements, but also her many lecture and theatre tours. Also highlighted are her receipt of the National Medal of Arts presented by President Ronald Reagan and the National Artist Award presented by the American National Theatre and Academy.

Vaudeville Times The most serious of all the great ladies of the American Theatre of the Twentieth Century, Eva turned to performing in vaudeville twice. Once in the early 1930s when there was still big-time vaudeville and again in the late 1930s when she was one of three or four acts preceding the major event—a feature motion movie. Ms. Le Gallienne also performed in two vaudeville revues, the first in 1919 as a cast member in Elsie Janis and Her Gang . Twenty years later she rejoined Elsie in Frank Fay Vaudeville Eva Le Gallienne was a biographer of her friend and mentor Eleanor Duse, and a friend to Sara Bernhardt, Constance Collier, Alla Nazimova and Margaret Webster, all titans of the theatre. The Great Depression Part Two In August of 1930, Cardinal Hayes, heading up the Catholic Theater League, attacked a number of productions as "obscene". In addition, Frank Gillmore, then president of Actor's Equity also spoke out against "salacious" shows. Gillmore was afraid that such shows would increase the argument for public censorship. In an effort to thwart the possibility of imposed censorship, Gillmore and others sponsored a program similar to one already adopted by Hollywood for self-censorship. Ed Wynn, who brought Simple Simon to the Shuberts' Philadelphia theater, refused to appear until the showcards for the next attraction, Earl Carroll's Sketch Book , were removed from the lobby. Wynn was afraid that the photos would upset the family trade and discourage business. This on-going war of the writers vs. the righteous would not have a specific conclusion, as we know from recent events with the production of Corpus Christi Though it would seem that this should have been a decade of loss for artistic theater, it was actually a period of major transformation and growth. While the economic state of the country worsened, the Broadway community rallied again. An estimated 25,000 theater people were displaced by the effects of the depression, the majority in New York. In some theaters, prices were dropped to a 25-cent minimum, with a $1.00 top price. Actors and producers experimented with repertory productions, to keep as many working as often as possible, and to keep as many productions as possible active.

1982/3 - A BROADWAY REVIVAL AND TELEVISION PRODUCTION
next film

Eva Le Gallienne's classic stage version of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" has been around for a good number of years and there are records of it being performed as long ago as 1932. The most remembered performance was at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway in 1947 with dancer Bambi Linn in the lead role.
Bambi Linn looks up as Eva Le Gallienne, playing the White Queen, flies in.
Gallienne revived the adaptation on and around Broadway in the late seventies with Kate Burton playing Alice. Bambi Linn, by this time in her fifties but still involved in dance as a choreographer, was movement co-ordinator for this revival. In 1982 it was adapted as a play for television. Kirk Browning directed, Kate Burton reprised the role of Alice, and her father, Richard Burton, played the White Knight, along with an 'unforgettable all-star cast'. The 1947 musical score by Richard Addinsell and Jonathan Tunick was retained.
Also in the cast were Eve Arden, Kaye Ballard, Maureen Stapleton, James Coco, Tony Cummings

The Mystic in the Theatre: Eleonora Duse > Customer Review #1: An Excellent view of a supreme artist

The spirit of Eleonora Duse fills this excellent little book. Eva Le Gallienne, a master in her own right, clearly loves Duse, and she unapologetically deifies her. Weaving together histories, analyses, personal recollections, quotes, reviews, and theological musings, Le Gallienne creates a vivid image of the woman, and made me mourn that I could not see her myself. She even addresses that, responding to a young actor with the same complaint (with pity). But I did feel, after reading the book, that I had connected with Duse in some small way; In this, Le Gallienne is an actor on the page, guiding her audience to the character without forcing it upon them. The message I got was that Duse was a person first. Other actors are full of life when on the stage, and switch off once the curtain falls. For Duse, theatre was an extension of her life. Her craft (so strong that she seemed to have none) and her spirit filled the stage, but no more than it filled her life.
