Spotlight on Burt Lancaster: A Retrospective Look At The Scalphunters by: Carl Anthony Picture this: a knock-down, dragged-out fight between two "friends" that must be one of the longest fights between two people in movie making history. And they're in a couple of feet of water. By the time the fight is over, all the mud at the bottom of this watering hole out West is plastered all over the opponents. You can just about make out that the two are Burt Lancaster and Ossie Davis! Allegedly, when The Scalphunters was made some thirty years ago, producer partners Levy-Gardner-Laven wanted to change the script so as not to stir up racial problems in society, but Burt insisted the verbal exchange between the black and white characters was real and made sense in the story. So it stayed. Both men did their own stunt work. Burt, of course, was a professional circus trapeze artist and acrobat before becoming an actor in Hollywood at 33, and was one of the most rugged men in town. Therefore, he never let anyone else stand in for him even for the dirty work! Burt wanted his scenes to be believable. He walked off many sets in his 85 movie career when a director wanted anything done that "wouldn't fly." His stubbornness matched his ruggedness. His Irish mother, whom he worshipped, had a tough time with the "hyper" Burt who was always getting in fights and running in and out of traffic. Even though automobiles were scarce in the twenties, Burt managed to get hit on eight separate occasions! As rugged as that may be, Burt was also an intellectual. By the time he was 14 they say he had read every book in the library on 110th Street in New York City. He lies motionless in bed, his face in shadow. The brightest light in the shot shines on his T-shirted chest as he learns that two hit men are on their way to rub him out. He's nearly invisible as he passively accepts his fate, his face in shadow until just before he's murdered. Four decades later, in his last feature film, 1989's "Field of Dreams," Lancaster plays an elderly doctor who has always wanted a time at bat as a professional baseball player. His final scene concludes with him disappearing into a cornfield after achieving his dream. These two evanescent moments bookend a career in which box-office hits like "From Here to Eternity" and "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" made possible the artistic risks he took in foreign and independent American films such as Luchino Visconti's sumptuous epic "The Leopard" and the acerbic "Sweet Smell of Success." At the center were Owen Daybright (Lancaster), an honest ranch foreman, and his half-brother Lee Strobie (Robert Walker), a troublemaker who is clearly the bad seed in the family. Both men are in love with cafe waitress Lily Fasken (Sally Forrest), a situation which becomes volatile when Lily gets pregnant and her two angry brothers come gunning for the responsible party. Burt Lancaster was still in the early phase of his film career when he took over the starring role in Vengeance Valley , a role described as "a typical John Wayne part," one given over to uncomplicated good guy heroics. Lancaster's apparent ease in the saddle and his rough hewn, rawhide appearance demonstrated he was perfect for the Western genre. Still, he had a few critics; twenty years later veteran stuntman Gil Perkins commented on his horsemanship in Vengeance Valley : "He can ride a horse pretty good now, but at first he was fairly weak at this." Obviously, the actor greatly improved his equestrian skills because a quarter of his career would eventually be devoted to the Western.
