    July 4, 1997
Jim Lehrer remembers the work of Charles Kuralt. Charles Kuralt one of the most distinguished voices in American journalism, died in New York City, July 4, from complications from lupus. He was 62 years old. Kuralt, best known for his "On the Road" dispatches and his "Sunday Morning" broadcast, joined CBS News in 1957. Upon hearing of his death, President Clinton released a statement saying, "Charles Kuralt's extraordinary imagination and skill gave America a unique view of itself. He helped us see the beauty and strength of character of our small towns and countryside. In so doing, he brought all members of the American family closer together. His passing on Independence Day reminds us in a poignant way of God's gift that is America." He will be remembered. CHARLES KURALT: You can’t drive very far on the back roads before you make a splendid discovery: America is not homogenized, not yet. Her accents are as different as her landscapes. That is the authentic sound of December in the Chesapeake Bay country, but take a gander at that old gander. She’s Erline Snow, who learned goose talk 60 years ago down home at Powells Point, North Carolina, and has been conversing with the Canada geese every autumn since. Hiroshi Naguchi doesn’t fool around.

Forgiving Charles Kuralt By Ralph Grizzle On the Road with Charles Kuralt. The legendary reporter in his youth. By Ralph Grizzle I will remember Independence Day 1997, not for its glorious displays of fireworks or for its patriotic celebrations in city squares, but as the day that Charles Kuralt died. His death affected me so profoundly that he occupied my mind even as my family and I sat watching fireworks burst streaks of color over Asheville, North Carolina. In fact, from that day on, I have devoted much of my own life to researching and writing about his. In subsequent months, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill commissioned me to conduct a series of oral histories with Kuralt's friends, family and colleagues. Sixty of my interviews now accompany the vast Charles Kuralt Collection, a historical archive of nearly 60,000 letters, scripts, memos and other memorabilia that Kuralt gave to the university for safekeeping. As I talked with people whose lives had intersected with Kuralt's, I heard time and again that Charles was just what you saw on television - genuine, sincere, sweet, caring, "a national hero," the "poet of America's back roads." Reactions to Kuralt's marital infidelity ranged from censure to sympathy. Faced with two disparate images of Kuralt - one whose friends characterized him as a national hero; the other of a man who cheated on his wife for nearly three decades - I found it difficult to reconcile how I should remember him. His moral frailty contrasted sharply with the seemingly strong convictions of the television personality who espoused goodness and character and virtue.

      Charles Kuralt
CBS News Correspondent BIOGRAPHY b. September 10, 1934
      d. July 04, 1997
Charles Kuralt was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, and moved with his family up and down the state before they settled in Charlotte, North Carolina. His passion for reporting asserted itself early, and he worked for several local newspapers and a radio station while still in high school. At the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, he edited the student-owned newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel . After his year as editor, he left the University without taking a degree and returned to Charlotte to become general assignment reporter for the Charlotte News. Within a few months, he began to write a daily column, People, describing the lives of everyday citizens, a taste of things to come. His work at the News won the Ernie Pyle prize and attracted attention outside of North Carolina. In 1957, still only months out of school, he was offered a job at CBS News. He was to remain with CBS for the rest of his life. His first assignment was writing the five-minute radio broadcasts that aired hourly between two and six AM. He began work each day at midnight, and worked until eight in the morning, but he was thrilled to be working in the same building as his hero, Edward R. Murrow. After a single week of substituting for a vacationing writer on Murrow's nightly broadcast, Kuralt was transferred to the fledgling television news department, as a writer for the CBS Evening News. Although the writer's job was considered a plum position for a novice like Kuralt, he was eager to be a reporter, out in the field. He willingly took a cut in pay and returned to the graveyard shift, but this time as a "reporter contact" on the assignment desk, where he might have the opportunity to cover breaking news. Within the year CBS offered him the job of his dreams. He was 23, and now had the title of CBS News Correspondent, just like his idols, Murrow and Sevareid.

      Charles Kuralt
CBS News Correspondent Inducted into the Academy in 1993 "For 25 or 30 years I never had an assignment. These were all stories I wanted to do myself. So they were always about somebody I liked, 'cause if I didn't like him, I just didn't do the story. And to have somebody else paying the bills for this tourism, to every corner of every state, over and over again why, who wouldn't want a job like that?" Charles Kuralt has been called "the poet laureate of the common man." For almost 30 years he wandered the back roads of America, finding inspiring stories in the lives of ordinary people in out of the way places. Throughout the 1960s and '70s, while the lead stories on the CBS Evening News were often about war, assassinations, pollution, poverty, and civil unrest, Charles Kuralt's "On the Road" segments showed America another side of itself. His stories were full of the splendors of nature and the simple decency of people going about their business in America's forgotten places. Cowboys, farmers, pilots, fishermen, poets, inventors, Kuralt found his heroes in all 50 states and in all walks of life. He began his career when television news was just beginning and, while still in his 20s, traveled the world covering the wars, riots and revolutions that make the headlines, but he will be remembered for the stories of people "doing wonderful things, quietly" that he brought into our living rooms, week after week.

    Remembering Charles Kuralt

by Ralph Grizzle, Edwin M. Yoder
The Globe Pequot Press, 2001 O n the front of this book there's a picture of television journalist Charles Kuralt and a photographer in a field of tall grass. Kuralt is standing, with his sunglasses perched on his nose, wearing a checked shirt slightly too small from his frame. The photographer is kneeling, and both are peering at the same thing somewhere off to the right. Kuralt is fully engaged, alert, with a small smile on his face. I think, after reading this memoir of friends, that it is obvious this is how Charles Kuralt liked to live his life: intense and focused on creating a picture with words that we in his TV audience could embrace. Many of the reminiscences in the book point out that Kuralt found himself a niche in the world of TVãa niche where some of his talents may have been wasted, but where he was comfortable until he decided to pull the plug. A brilliant writer and reporter, Kuralt was a worthy successor to Edward R. Morrow, but never had a worn-torn London to report on to show his reporting "chops."
