His works included classics such as High Noon, The Defiant Ones and Judgment at Nuremberg. Oscars Katherine Hepburn won an Oscar for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner "He seemed to be doing very well," she said. "I was getting dressed and coming out to see him, and 20 minutes later he was gone." Kramer's films were nominated for 80 Oscars, winning 16 in total, although none for best picture. Victories included those for Gary Cooper (High Noon), Maximilian Schell (Judgement at Nuremberg) and Katharine Hepburn (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner). "Stanley Kramer is one of our great filmmakers, not just for the art and passion he put on screen, but for the impact he has made on the conscience of the world," fellow director Steven Spielberg once said.

Precedents: Classic Films on DVD Stanley Kramer (1913-2001) Judge Barrie Maxwell March 6th, 2001 Email Judge Maxwell As a movie enthusiast, I guess I first became really aware of Stanley Kramer when It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World appeared in 1964. Oh, I had seen Judgment at Nuremberg a few years prior, but that was before I started associating films with their directors. Then in 1967, I was impressed with his Guess Who's Coming to Dinner , but I didn't realize then that there weren't going to be any more real winners from Stanley Kramer. He had six more films in him, but titles like RPM The Domino Principle (1976), and even Oklahoma Crude (1973) didn't do anyone proud (except maybe George C. Scott in the latter). I like to think that it was this last period that prompted Andrew Sarris's rather dismissive evaluation of Kramer: "If Stanley Kramer had not existed, he would have had to have been invented as the most extreme example of thesis or message cinema. Unfortunately, he has been such an easy and willing target for so long that his very ineptness has been encrusted with tradition. He will never be a natural, but time has proved that he is not a fake." but Sarris's words were written in 1968 for his book "The American Cinema" before any of those last films of Kramer's were made. I really find it hard to reconcile Sarris's view with Kramer's earlier interesting and intelligent efforts such as

Kramer's nearly three dozen films garnered 80 Oscar nominations and 16 Oscar wins. His films often dealt with issues surrounding racism, war and justice. The movies included High Noon The Defiant Ones Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and Judgement at Nuremberg Elwy Yost is a film historian and movie buff who spent more than two decades hosting Saturday Night at the Movies for TV Ontario. Sidney Poitier stars as Noah Cullen, an educated black convict in a chain gang whose "other half" is John "Joker" Johnson, a white, Southern bigot played by Tony Curtis. The two men, shackled together with chains, decide to escape when their prison truck crashes on the highway, providing them with a chance for freedom. As they take to the back roads, their hostility and distrust of one another eventually gives way to mutual respect as they dodge sheriffs, hunting dogs, lynch mobs, and gun-wielding youths together. The Defiant Ones marked a significant turning point in Sidney Poitier's career. Since the mid-fifties, Poitier had become a spokesperson for black empowerment due to his intelligent and uncompromising characterizations in such films as
