Joshua Kobak grew up playing piano and delivering newspapers in Medina, Ohio, a small victorian village south of Cleveland. At 16, he began to keep a journal and play the guitar, his first song soon followed. In high school, he played cover tunes for school dances with his band Ceolecanth, named after the ancient "living fossil" fish. When Joshua received a keyboard and sequencer as a graduation gift from his mom he began seriously writing and arranging music. Joshua went to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) for musical theater. He studied acting, singing and dancing, and learned a lot about himself as well. He wrote constantly on the piano, the guitar and his sequencer. When he met Katy Pfaffl at CCM, they formed SWIM . During his junior and senior years, Joshua wrote his first show "The Colors of Love" , which he later directed. Joshua, Katy, and Christian Samuelson co-produced "The Colors of Love" with a cast and crew of 50, for 8 well-received performances at the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati. The music of swim could be characterized as a hybrid of Jeff Buckley and Bono singing songs written/arranged by Peter Gabriel and Sting, and produced by Pink Floyd. swim has been in existence since 1995 and has evolved into the six-member band who created the album above and beneath. They are a group of elevationists called “an excellent ensemble” by Relic magazine after their 1998 performance in Amsterdam, Holland.
