On May 25, 1775, upon news of the clashes at Lexington-Concord, its president departed New York City just ahead of a mob bent upon doing him mortal harm for his Tory sentiments and pamphleteering efforts on behalf of the Crown. Of the College's seven faculty members (inclusive of the medical faculty), five aligned with England and against the revolution. Only the frequent butt of student escapades, Tutor Robert Harpur, became a vigorous patriot. Among the Governors, for every one who sided with the Revolution, five became Loyalists. Of the 150 King's College students whose revolutionary politics have been identified, for every Patriot there were at least three Loyalists. But on other issues that angered colonists elsewhere, such as the placement of British troops in the colonies and the threat of a resident Anglican bishop posed to the dissenting religious denominations that were in the majority in several colonies, the Anglican mercantile and landowning elite of New York had no quarrel. Unlike Bostonians, for example, New Yorkers had long accommodated a substantial military presence, and assured British army officers a favored place in the City's social activities. Several of His Majesty's finest, for example, had married into King's College families. Similarly, New York's Anglicans were determined that if the colonies were to have a bishop, his seat should be in New York.

LITR 4232: American Renaissance Sample Student Essay Lisa Runnels Professor White Literature 4232 19 April 2001 Political Romantics It is Stanton's language that makes her work so powerful and passionate. The strong imagery of daily life fills women with sympathy and understanding. Contrary to this Stanton's words and actions filled men with fear and caused an onslaught of written and verbal attacks. Using everyday depictions paired with words such as struggle, overcome, courage, sacred and tempest-tossed she is able to romanticize the strenuous efforts she and others faced. What woman would not be moved to action by such a depiction? Portrayed as a warrior woman, fighting the injustices of a patriarchal government each woman becomes a welder of the sword of equality. Stanton refers to Emerson quoting, "A healthy discontent is the first step to progress." (Heath 2033) The discontent that plagued the women's struggle came from inequality, a fight that Emerson never faced, but seemed to understand. With intellectual prowess and impassioned ideas Fuller gains footing as the one thing male authority fears, the thinking female. Speaking to every woman Fuller reminds them that equality is a right not because of gender, but because of birth. The language of romanticism fills her ideas by portraying the inalienable right of equality as a quest. A quest that is fraught with barriers, but a prize worth the struggle. Romanticism paints a picture for the onlooker with carefully chosen words and high-minded ideas.

French Clock
Time is a heavy legend to be told
By this slight clock, shapely and full of guile,
With brilliants at its throat, the sun in gold,
Louis' own seal, above its painted smile.
Some clocks have souls; they grow into a wall,
Become a part of lives they tick away;
This is a toy, perfect, sufficient all
Unto itselfa butterfly at bay.
Hours and years? They change but do not pass!
In this light world of gold and ormolu
Time is one splendid moment under glass!
Mad little clock, so gay it never knew
Blood on the hours, a lifted pikea head
And hot throats roaring that the King is dead! (Text from The Best Poems of 1923

A Brief History of Western Herbal Medicine
Medicinal Practices in Primitive Societies
Herbal medicine is one of the oldest forms of healing. Our most primitive forbears made abundant use of available plants to treat illness and injury. The majority of this early plant-based knowledge was gained through empirical evidence. The choice of plants to be used in a particular case was based on the outcome of previous choices, and then that information was consistently passed down from one generation to the next. Knowledge grew as early populations migrated to new lands and discovered and experimented with new plants. In "primitive" societies, there were distinct roles for both the shaman and the healer. The shaman, generally a male, focused on the spiritual health of the community. The healer, generally a female, was responsible for the physical well being of the community. The healer's treatments utilized plants extensively. Each community developed their own form of treatments based on the availability of plants in their local environment.
Early Herbal Leaders
Some of the earliest writings to be discovered were focused on plants. Several early herbals, or writings of botanical remedies, have been collected. The Chinese herbal

by John Foster, Cecil E. Maranville and Jim Tuck This Is the Way... A Vision Beyond the Spectacles by Robin Webber Feb '02 WNP Main This is the Way... A Vision Beyond the Spectacles A ll of us who are a little bit older have those anxious moments, when we have forgotten where we last placed our glasses. We simply can't read the newspaper in front of us without our spectacles. Momentary panic sets in, and we fully realize how fragile our ability is to function without them. Are they lost? Will I find them? Why didn't I just keep them on? Reaching for glasses and knowing the benefit they provide are comforting feelings. This marvelous combination of wire and glass or plastic enables us to move forward in the world of thought and letters. Fortunately, hundreds of years ago, one older man knew right where to reach when he needed to correct his vision, and as the saying goes, "the rest is history." But it wasn't necessarily what he placed on his nose, as much as it was what lay in his mind's eye that allowed America to become what it is today. Most Americans and many people around the world have heard of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Washington's Farewell Address or Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. But most people haven't heard about the "Newburgh Address." This speech was given at what some consider the most important single gathering in American history. The man who reached for his glasses that day extended his influence to this present time. The question is, What did that man see that others around him could not discern? You may want to reach for your own glasses and take a closer look.
