No wonder Iran's Abbas Kiarostami is the darling of the film festival circuit. He gave his only Melbourne interview to Nassim Khadem ASK the next person to tell you about Iran, and they probably won’t be able to give you a comprehensive answer. Ask them to tell you about Iranian cinema and they just might. Ask them to name the Iranian President and you’ll be met with a blank face. But ask them to name Iran’s greatest film director, and chances are they will tell you all about Abbas Kiarostami. Kiarostami is in Melbourne at the moment (it is his first time in Australia) as a special guest of the film festival, where a selection of his films is being screened. (And he’s not the only Iranian getting an outing: there are 15 films from Iran in the festival this year, a mark of the esteem with which the country’s cinema – virtually unheard of a decade ago – is now held in the West.) TEN One of the true masters of contemporary cinema, Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami has won not only the admiration of audiences and critics worldwide, but also the support of directors as distinguished as Jean-Luc Godard, Nanni Moretti (who made a short film about opening one of Kiarostami's films in his theater in Rome), Chris Marker, and Akira Kurosawa, who said of Kiarostami's "extraordinary" films: "Words cannot describe my feelings about them and I simply advise you to see his films... When Satyajit Ray passed on, I was very depressed. But after seeing Kiarostami's films, I thanked God for giving us just the right person to take his place." Though Kiarostami emerged in the West as a major filmmaker in the early '90swith films like Close-Up and Through the Olive Trees he had already been making films in Iran for two decades. Born on June 22nd 1940 in Tehran, Kiarostami was interested in the arts from an early age. He won a painting competition at the age of eighteen, and left home to study at Tehran University's Faculty of Fine Arts. As a designer and illustrator, Kiarostami worked throughout the '60s in advertising, making commercials, designing posters, creating credit titles for films (including Gheyshar by M. Kimiai), and illustrating children's books.

Through this they guide the reader to listen for the space between objects compared, to observe the "grand scheme" implied in the particular, to note how the "obvious" is unobserved and surprising. An example from the introduction of this last point: "... a sycamore leaf / falls softly / and rests / on its own shadow" The poems are like haiku in that they are minimalist and nature based. However, the sensibility of the cosmic purpose present in these poems differs from the sensibility of cosmic nowness of the (Zen) haiku tradition. An example: "... the clock /reads seven minutes to seven" reads in these poems as "seven" intentionally invoking cultural connotations. In haiku, it would more likely read as factual observation ... enlightened observation, perhaps, but observation.
