Abbas Kiarostami
Born in Teheran on June 22, 1940, Abbas Kiarostami showed an early talent for drawing. He took part in a graphic art competition and received a scholarship. At the age of 18, he left home. From 1960 to 1968, he designed the title sequences for features films, including that of Gheyshar by M. Kimiai. While holding down a bureaucratic job in a police station, he attended lectures at the Fine Arts School. In 1969, with a friend, he founded the cinema department of the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults. Very soon, the department became one of Iran's most prestigious studios. Among others who worked there were A. Naderi, B.Beyzao, D. Mehrjui, E. Forozesh. D. Panahi and Sobrah Sh. Salesso. From 1970, Abbas Kiarostami made several short films and features. His favourite subject until 1991 was children. He prefers working with non-professional actors and on location. His work is recognisable for its Chekovian humour and poetry. He has been a member of the jury of several festivals: Locarno in 1990, Cannes in 1993, Venice in 1995, San Sebastian in 1996. He won the Golden Palm at Cannes in 1997 for The Taste of Cherry and, at Venice in 1999, he was awarded the Special Jury Prize for

Abbas Kiarostami
Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa and Jonathan Rosenbaum
This penetrating study of the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami's life and work engages a cross-cultural dialogue between Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa, an Iranian filmmaker, and Jonathan Rosenbaum, a film critic, both of whom have an intense interest in Kiarostami's work. A pioneer in Iranian cinema and considered one of the most controversial and influential filmmakers alive, Kiarostami has written or directed more than twenty films. He gained notoriety in the West in the 1990s with the breakaway films Close-Up and Through the Olive Trees and became the first Iranian director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Taste of Cherry. He is also largely credited for his contributions to the Iranian New Wave. Abbas Kiarostami is the first full-length, English-language study of his work. A unique and resplendent collaboration featuring two distinct but complementing perspectives, the book places Kiarostami and his films in a national context and provides American readers with valuable insights into Iranian culture, Kiarostami's portrayal of women and politics, and his influence on other filmmakers. Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa is a filmmaker and faculty member at Columbia College in Chicago. She is the author of essays and articles on Iranian cinema.

Abbas Kiarostami — The Truth Behind Reality by Fergus Daly Abbas Kiarostami was already 50 back in 1990 when French critics encountered his work for the first time. Given that he'd made his first feature The Passenger in 1974, it was a comparatively unprecedented late discovery mainly due to the censorious climate in his native Iran under both the Shah and the post revolutionary leadership. Despite this, it was still several more years before English speaking critics began to take notice and even now there is far from consensual support for the idea of Kiarostami as one of the great modern masters of world cinema (strangely enough, Tarantino is one his best known Anglo-American admirers). This lack of consensus, particularly on behalf of film writers, is not restricted to Kiarostami and seems to be quite a contemporary phenomenon. There seems to have been far greater unanimity back in, say, the 60's regarding the high modernist canon of Bergman, Bresson, Antonioni and Bunuel than there is today vis-a-vis Lars Von Trier, Alexander Sokurov, Sharunas Bartas or even Atom Egoyan. To take Sokurov as an example, the wide showing of his Mother and Son has been due more to the intervention of celebrities such as Schrader, Scorsese and Nick Cave than to the influence of any film critic or magazine per se. That there is greater consensus in France regarding Kiarostami's genius is not unrelated to his popularity there, and there is no doubt that film journalists with the leading Parisian newspapers weild more considerable power and influence over the public than their equivalents here or in Britain. With the sparsity of screenings of Kiarostami's films in Ireland (even at the major festivals) it is most welcome that within two weeks two of his finest works will be available on video.

One Visa Problem Costs a Festival Two Filmmakers
By Celestine Bohlen
The internationally acclaimed Iranian film director Abbas Kiarostami, who won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1997 for "A Taste of Cherry," was unable to get a United States visa in time to attend the premiere of his new film, "Ten," at the New York Film Festival last Saturday, prompting his friend and fellow director Aki Kaurismaki of Finland to boycott the festival in protest. "If international cultural exchange is prevented, what is left?" asked Mr. Kaurismaki, whose new film "The Man Without a Past" will be shown at this year's festival. "The exchange of arms?" Mr. Kiarostami, 62, who has been to the United States seven times in the course of his career, was told this month at the United States Embassy in Paris that the earliest he could get permission to come into the country was December. Stringent new rules, put in place after last year's terrorist attacks, now require a three-month background check on some applicants for United States visas, in particular those from Muslim countries.

One of the true masters of contemporary cinema, Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami has won not only the admiration of audiences and critics worldwide, but also the support of directors as distinguished as Jean-Luc Godard, Nanni Moretti (who made a short film about opening one of Kiarostami's films in his theater in Rome), Chris Marker, and Akira Kurosawa, who has said of Kiarostami's "extraordinary" films: "Words cannot describe my feelings about them and I simply advise you to see his films... When Satyajit Ray passed on, I was very depressed. But after seeing Kiarostami's films, I thanked God for giving us just the right person to take his place."
Though Kiarostami emerged in the West as a major filmmaker in the early '90swith films like Close-Up and Through the Olive Trees he had already been making films in Iran for two decades. Born on June 22nd 1940 in Tehran, Kiarostami was interested in the arts from an early age.

Links Abbas Kiarostami is the leading Iranian director of the generation that stormed the West in the 1990s. Khaneh-Je Doost Kojast/ Where is my Friend's House (1987) is a fairy tale about a child's drama consumed among the indifference of the adults. A world that is too consumed by mundane chores and business does not see and cannot share the emotions of a simple and noble soul. Kiarostami's down-to-earth style is at its most eloquent in Namayeh Nazdik/ Close-Up (1989), which stands as a sort of manifesto of his art. A journalist is driving the police on a hired taxi to arrest a man who has posed as the famous director Makhmalbaf. The journalist is convinced this will be the case that makes him famous. While the driver kills time outside (close-up of a can he hit that rolls down the street), the journalist and the police enter the house and arrest the man. The journalist did not bring a tape recorder and is now desperately asking around for one.
Titles. The film begins with the director, Kiarostami, interviewing the soldiers who arrested the impostor. Kiarostami is making a movie about the impostor and interviews both the family and the suspect. The family is still hurt by the fact that the director took advantage of their good manners. The impostor, on the other hand, is mainly guilty of loving cinema so much. Kiarostami asks the judge permission to film the trial. The judge is surprised that such a silly case draws the attention of a film-maker, but Kiarostami explains that this is the case of somebody who pretended to be a director and that is intriguing for a director. Kiarostami clarifies his idea of cinema when he ejects "the director is the spectator".
