Kennedy, John Fitzgerald (1917-1963)
John F. Kennedy was born 29 May 1917 to a politically prominent, wealthy Boston family. As a child, Kennedy enjoyed the privileges of an elite education, eventually graduating from Harvard University in 1938. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Kennedy followed his father's entry into politics. Following three terms in the House of Representatives, Kennedy won a Senate seat in 1952. Kennedy remained in the Senate for eight years and in 1960, secured the Democratic Party's nomination for president. The 1960 presidential campaign, which pitted Kennedy against Richard Nixon, proved to be one of the closest elections in U.S. history, one in which Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement played a pivotal role. After King's 1960 arrest in Georgia, Kennedyfollowing the recommendations of campaign advisorscalled Coretta King to offer his support and used his influence to secure King's release from Reidsville Prison. As a result, Kennedy garnered a large amount of support from the black community. While King chose to remain publicly impartial, he privately voiced support for Kennedy. On election day, Kennedy defeated Nixon by less than 1% of the popular vote, a margin of victory that highlighted the importance of African-American support. Immediately after his election, Kennedy proceeded cautiously with respect to civil rights. Despite pleas from King and other civil rights leaders for federal intervention during the controversy surrounding the

When I think of the Kennedys of Massachusetts, I think of their long legacy of strength and faith, love of family, and commitment to helping others less fortunate. The Kennedys are the products of two amazing Irish families, the Kennedys and the Fitzgeralds. Thomas Fitzgerald and Patrick Kennedy both migrated to Boston from Wexford County in Ireland during the potato famine of 1840. Fitzgerald married Rose Mary Murray, whose family had also migrated to Boston from Wexford County. Kennedy married Bridget Murphy. The survival of these ancestors in the new land meant endless hours of backbreaking labor, poverty, tenements, and early death. The Fitzgeralds both died in their thirties, leaving behind nine children and little money. Kennedy died at the age of thirty-five and left behind his wife and four children. John F "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, the third born, had to leave Harvard Medical School, where he had been given a scholarship, in order to help care for his brothers and sisters. He and the family survived and he soon entered ward politics. By 1895 he had run successfully for Congress, and after serving two terms, became mayor of Boston in 1906. Patrick J "PJ" Kennedy, the youngest of the four Kennedy children, didn't have the same opportunities Fitzgerald did. He helped his mother in the store she managed, worked around the waterfront, and later became a stevedore. He never finished grade school. But Kennedy had a head for business. He opened a neighborhood bar on his scrimped savings, built his business into an "empire" of neighborhood saloons, entered the coal business later on, followed by wholesale liquor, and finally banking.

John F. Kennedy, jr More Scots than Irish ? T HE RECENT TRAGEDY that robbed American society of three of its brightest ornaments occurred as we were preparing a provisional account of the origins of the Kennedy clan in Scotland. Kennedy power throughout the mediaeval centuries was enormous in the southwest, it being traditional that ~ 'Twixt Wigtown and the town of Ayr,
Portpatrick and the Cruives of Cree,
No man need think to bide there
Unless he court with Kennedy. (The cruives were the fishtraps on the River Cree running northerly from Wigtown Bay.) The known ancestry of the late John F. Kennedy claims Irish roots, but the Irish of that name, in common with those of many others (George Bernard Shaw, incidentally, a favourite son of Dublin, was a cadet of the Shaws of Rothiemurcus, on Speyside in Inverness-shire), were originally Scots. Some confusion is found among the readers of Alexander Nisbet, who wrote in 1722 that ~ The first of this name and family is said to be one Kenneth , an Irish or Highland Scotsman ....... but at that time "Irish" was a synonym for "Highland" (as is well evidenced by contemporary letters), and it is more probable that the clan springs from a younger son of the

    BIO
    John Fitzgerald Kennedy
    Born: 5/29/1917
    Birthplace: Brookline, Mass.
    Died: 11/22/1963
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Mass., on May 29, 1917. His father, Joseph P. Kennedy, was Ambassador to Great Britain from 1937 to 1940.
Kennedy was graduated from Harvard University in 1940 and joined the Navy the next year. He became skipper of a PT boat that was sunk in the Pacific by a Japanese destroyer. Although given up for lost, he swam to a safe island, towing an injured enlisted man.
After recovering from a war-aggravated spinal injury, Kennedy entered politics in 1946 and was elected to Congress. In 1952, he ran against Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., of Massachusetts, and won.
Kennedy was married on Sept. 12, 1953, to Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, by whom he had three children: Caroline, John Fitzgerald, Jr., and Patrick Bouvier (died in infancy).
In 1957 Kennedy won the Pulitzer Prize for a book he had written earlier, Profiles in Courage.
After strenuous primary battles, Kennedy won the Democratic presidential nomination on the first ballot at the 1960 Los Angeles convention. With a plurality of only 118,574 votes, he carried the election over Vice President Richard M. Nixon and became the first Roman Catholic president. Kennedy brought to the White House the dynamic idea of a “New Frontier” approach in dealing with problems at home, abroad, and in the dimensions of space. Out of his leadership in his first few months in office came the 10-year Alliance for Progress to aid Latin America, the Peace Corps, and accelerated programs that brought the first Americans into orbit in the race in space.
