Kennedy Jr., his wife and sister-in-law, found dead in the wreckage of his plane off Martha's Vineyard. Two visitors pay quiet respect at a John F. Kennedy Memorial in Canton, Ohio. Family members were to board the Navy Destroyer USS Briscoe, bringing with them the cremated remains of Mr. Kennedy, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Lauren Bessette, according to Bruce Fisher, the pilot of the 563-foot ship. The ashes were to be scattered off Martha's Vineyard. Shortly before 7 a.m., a chaplain boarded the Coast Guard cutter Sanibel at Woods Hole. Three folded American flags and three wreaths with red, yellow and white flowers were also placed on the ship. Coast Guard Captain Russel Webster said the Sanibel was to meet up with the Briscoe, then return to Woods Hole to pick up the Kennedy family. John F. Kennedy Jr.'s sister, Caroline Kennedy, left her home on Long Island early today to fly to Cape Cod for the ceremony. The somber ceremony was the latest step in a tragedy that has gripped the nation for nearly a week.

The plane piloted by her husband, John F. Kennedy Jr., apparently went into the sea off Martha's Vineyard. Also on board was Bessette's older sister, Lauren, a venture capitalist. In the face of all that, Bessette, 33, tried to keep a low profile. She showed up at fashion shows and shopped and made the scene with her husband, the publisher of George magazine, when that scene was not stuffily political. She went along to Kennedy family gatherings at Hyannis Port and had dinner with her husband's aunt, Lee Radziwill. Often, friends said, she sought counsel on being a Kennedy and a camera magnet from her sister-in-law, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. And this worked. Nearly three years after her marriage, she had succeeded in shaking her media hounds. She became studiedly boring. Andrew Cuomo, son of former New York governor Mario Cuomo, and Kerry Kennedy Cuomo, daughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, announced Monday they are separating after 13 years of marriage. "This separation is amicable and the couple does not wish to comment further," said a statement issued through Kerry Kennedy's brother, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The Cuomos have three daughters. Andrew Cuomo is a former U.S. housing secretary who ran unsuccessfully for New York governor last year. Kerry Kennedy is a human-rights activist. (AP) (CBS/AP) John F.
