Before landing one of the starring roles on Star Trek (Dr. "Bones" McCoy), DeForest Kelley paid his dues in early sitcoms and live melodramas. Jeff Vilencia has unearthed what must be the actor's first TV role - in a six minute playlette called "The Bitter End", featured on an anthology series called 'The Little Theatre', circa 1949-50. This was also known as 'Suicide Theatre' - now there's a limited concept! Don't bother looking up 'The Little Theatre' (or 'Suicide Theatre') in the TV history books - this is the only evidence such a series even existed! The Bitter End
(6 Minutes) Starring DeForest Kelley and Ellen Corby (Grandma on 'The Waltons'). Ellen Corby passed away on April 16, 1999. DeForest Kelley died on June 11, 1999.

Portrays Dr. Leonard H. McCoy
Jackson DeForest Kelley was delivered at home in Atlanta, Georgia by his uncle, a prominent local physician. Kelley lived all over the South as the son of Clara Casey Kelley and Rev. Ernest D. Kelley, a Baptist minister. After singing in the church choir, Kelley discovered that he enjoyed singing and was good at it. Eventually this led to solos and later performing on radio station WSB in Atlanta. As a result of his radio appearances, he won an engagement with Lew Forbes and his orchestra at the Paramount Theater. It was Kelley's first taste of being an entertainer, and he liked it. Kelley moved to Long Beach, California after he had saved enough money working as an usher in a local theater to live with his uncle. Kelley found that he loved the sun, surf and excitement of Long Beach and told his parents he was going to stay and get a job. Mopping floors soon gave way to operating an elevator in a hotel near the ocean. One day, Kelley was sitting in a restaurant when Rohn Hawke, who was doing local theater, came over and asked if he had any acting experience. Hawke worked with him to smooth out his Georgia accent, wanting Kelley to appear in a play he was directing. He auditioned and won the part. During the run of the play, a talent scout caught his performance and felt he had a future in acting. In the evenings, Kelley continued to appear with the Long Beach Theater Group to gain experience, while operating an elevator and 'roughnecking' for Richfield Oil during the day. Sometime later, Kelley and some friends from the group started writing and staging plays at a local radio station. This led to other radio work for him.

DeForest Kelley, 1920-1999
Actor DeForest Kelley, best known to fans around the world for his portrayal of "Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy" in the "Star Trek" television series and spin-off films, died June 11, 1999 after a lengthy battle with stomach cancer. Kelley, whose film credits included more than 35 motion pictures and 60 television series appearances, (excluding "Star Trek") was 79 years old. Born on January 20th, 1920 at his family's Atlanta Georgia home (he was delivered by an uncle who was a physician) Jackson DeForest Kelley was the son of devout Southern Baptists. Kelley's father, Rev. Ernest D. Kelley headed his own parish, and his mother, Clara Casey Kelley coordinated the church choir, which ultimately gave DeForest Kelley his first performing experience. Kelley originally aspired as a child to be a doctor, but that youthful ambition was shelved after Kelley's singing talents took him to live performances on Atlanta radio. Local radio led to an engagement fronting the Lew Forbes Orchestra at the Paramount Theater, and Kelley was determined to be an entertainer. Though the war had interrupted Kelley's personal and professional pursuits, it ultimately furthered his career. A paramount Pictures talent scout happened to see Kelley in the Navy industrial, offering him a 3-year contract, which started with a starring role in the 1947 release "Fear In The Night". Kelley soon found himself a busy character actor, cast primarily as "a black hat" in westerns or as heavy handed villains: An interesting turn for the minister's son who began his career as a choirboy and grew prize roses as a hobby. Kelley had appeared in well-known television series from "Bonanza" to "Route 66" and films including "

His most recent work was as the voice of Viking One in "Brave Little Toaster Goes To Mars" (1998), and as himself in the limited-release conventions docu "Trekkies." His last ST film was Judgement Rites (1994). About his only notable tv appearance since the 1973/74 animated ST series was the 1987 pilot/movie for ST:The Next Generation, his only non-ST film role since 1966 was Night Of The Lepus (1972). Most of his work before 1967 was in westerns including Gunfight At The OK Corral (1957), which inspired a ST episode a decade later. His pre-ST tv roles included Science Fiction Theatre (1955), as a doctor (though not on the Enterprise). From TV Guide, 7-17-99 issue: Make no "Bones" about it, DeForest Kelley was the heart of Star Trek . The veteran actor, who died of cancer June 11 at age 79, spent much of his early career as a villain in big-screen Westerns before playing outer-space good guy Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in the 1966-69 sci-fi series and 6 feature films. If Trek was Wagon Train in Space , as its creator Gene Roddenberry often said it was, and William Shatner (as Captain Kirk) was the ultimate space cowboy, then McCoy was the wise country doc we all wish we hadcrusty but kind, no-nonsense but deeply humane. These were qualities the soft-spoken, Georgia-born Kelleyknown to friends as "De"had in abundance. "He was a true Southern gentleman and a privilege to know," says Roddenberry's widow, Majel Barrett, who played McCoy's trusty assistant, Nurse Chapel. "I never heard anyone utter a word against De, and I never heard him say one derogatory thing about anyone else. Who else can you say that about? As much as the world will miss him, this is a much kinder place because he was around.

TOMBSTONE TRIBUTES
DeForest Kelley
by: Joe Wallison
The universe became a bit dimmer with the loss of beloved Star Trek co-star DeForest Kelley. Mr. Kelley passed away at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. Carolyn, his wife of 55 years, was by his side when he died. He was 79.
When his Star Trek co-stars were reached for comment, Leonard Nimoy said, "His job was to bring humanity to Star Trek and the role fit him perfectly. He was a decent, loving, caring partner and will be deeply missed." William Shatner added, "DeForest Kelley was a Southern gentleman all of his life a kind, good, wonderful friend."
Kelley was born in Atlanta, Georgia. The son of a Baptist Minister, Kelley sang in the church choir and aspired to become a doctor. His family could not afford to send his to medical school, so he began singing on local radio shows. As a young man, Kelley left Atlanta to go west and pursue an acting career. After serving in the Army's air Forces during World War II, he was given the opportunity to appear in a Navy training film. A talent scout from Paramount discovered him in it, and the studio signed him to a three year contract.
Kelley made his big screen debut in the 1947 film noir
