DANNY KAYE Entertainer Name at birth: David Daniel Kominski Danny Kaye was one of the most popular entertainers in the United States and England during the 1940s and '50s, thanks largely to a string of successful films that showcased his witty song-and-dance routines. Kaye worked on Broadway, having success in the early '40s with Lady in the Dark . Audiences loved his energy and clever wit and he was a popular stage performer during World War II, frequently working with material written by his wife, lyricist Sylvia Fine. He made more than a dozen popular movies, including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty The Inspector General (1959) and The Court Jester (1956). For years Kaye was a spokesman for the United Nation's Children's Fund, and in 1954 he was awarded a special Oscar for his humanitarian efforts. During the '60s he was on TV, the star of The Danny Kaye Show (1963-67), but his style of entertainment was no longer the rage and his popularity waned. His last performance on screen was for the television movie Skokie
Extra credit : One of Kaye's more famous routines is from The Court Jester and includes the line "the pellet with the poison's in the vestle with the pestle, the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true."

Danny Kaye
Danny Kaye was truly a multi-talented entertainer. From comedy, impersonation, improvisation, acting, popular music, and classical music, he did it all, finding success in film and on television, radio, and the stage. The son of an immigrant Russian tailor, Kaye dropped out of high school to work for a local radio station. He later became a comedian touring the Borscht Belt in the Catskills. In 1933, he joined the dance team of Dave Harvey and Kathleen Young. During his first performance with the group, he lost his balance and caused the audience to laugh. Pleased with this response, he later decided to work comedy into his dance routine.
During the late 1930s Kaye worked mainly on his own. He quickly made a name for himself and in 1937 he appeared in the first of several two-reel movies. In 1939 he made his Broadway debut in The Straw Hat Revue . Later that same year, he appeared in the production

51. Any Day Danny Kaye
Any Day danny kaye. By Stu Kobak. Describing the comedy of danny kaye isn’t the easiest chore. Often it’s a love him/hate him schism.
http://www.filmsondisc.com/features/dannykaye/anydaydannykaye.htm
Any Day Danny Kaye By Stu Kobak "The vessel with the pestle has the pellet with the poison and the chalice with the palace has the brew that is true," is the mantra for survival that Danny Kaye bollixes up in one of the screen’s funniest comedies, The Court Jester . The comic’s magic with word patter and his very individual physical style are in evidence in this 1956 spoof on golden era Hollywood swashbucklers. The Court Jester marks a departure from the usual Kaye vehicle since more attention is paid to the plot line and most of the humor develops through the interaction of the characters inhabiting this world. Many of Kaye’s previous movies depend on the comic’s screen persona rather than using terrific scripting to develop the comedy. The Court Jester reigns regally as the crown jewel of Kaye’s film output. From his feature film debut in the silly musical comedy Up in Arms to his final feature appearance in the made for television drama Skokie, Danny Kaye brought a likable explosiveness to the screen.
Kaye, born David Daniel Kaminski in 1913, displayed a flair for the theatrical even before he reached his fifth birthday. By the time he was sixteen, the redheaded mimic with the rubber face had turned professional. The unique comedy of Danny Kaye, cultivated in the hot house of Catskill comic traditions, owes more to the situational histrionics of burlesque than the stand-up comedy of jokesters like Bob Hope. Kaye’s extraordinary physical grace embellishes his madcap meandering to another level. Cap it off with Kaye’s gifted singing and the result is a performer that often surprises audiences with his range of performance.

THE DANNY KAYE SHOW U.S. Comedy/Variety The Danny Kaye Show , which premiered on 25 September 1963, was designed as a showcase for the multi-talented entertainer who, before appearing on television, was already a veteran of the vaudeville circuit, the Broadway stage, film, radio, and nightclubs. The variety series was not Kaye's first foray into television: a 1957 See It Now program, entitled The Secret Life of Danny Kaye , documented Kaye entertaining children around the world on behalf of UNICEF, an organization for which he worked for many years. In 1960, Kaye signed a $1.5 million contract for three annual special programs that would set the pattern for his later series. Although these specials were not critically successful, audience ratings (and two Emmy nominations for his second special with Lucille Ball) were sufficient for CBS to offer the entertainer his own weekly series. That same season, veteran performers Jerry Lewis and Judy Garland also premiered variety series, but faded quickly. Unlike comedians such as Red Skelton or Bob Hope, whose series highlighted their monologues, Kaye's variety hour was similar in scope to

Call Me Mister Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Me And Juliet Bells Are Ringing Irma La Douce (1960) and The Happy Time (1968) were among his most memorable hits. His most memorable moments in flops include his showstopping rendition of the hilariously profane "Butler's Song" in So Long, 174th Street
